As agreed, Abraham shoots a text to Fawkes "I'll be in the Tavern in the afternoon today, feel free to pop in!"

The first thing you smell upon entering the Tavern is a mixture of blood, smoke and pepper. The source of these odors quickly becomes obvious - there's a steady trail of steam billowing from the kitchen, and a head of something resembling a large reptile posted atop the bar. Its glassy eyes seem to scan the environment.

Behind the counter sits Abraham, adorned in his usual greens. To pass the time he whistles a tune to himself and then, abruptly, turns to the reptile head.

"What say you, Yorick? Will he show himself?"

    There's only silence.

"Yeah, I think so too!" Yhe knight-errant says with a laugh.

    Soup is almost ready.

Fawkes groans quietly as he reads the word Tavern with a capital T. His feet drag a bit, distracted by a street musician for several minutes before handing him the money that supposed to buy him lunch later. The rest goes to the park fee.

A few families give him dirty looks as he puffs away on a cigarette, before being asked to put it out politely by one of the Funderland staff. His jaw knots as he stares at the wishing well. The mannequin knew a lot about whimsical bullshit, but that didn't mean he particularly liked it. His life was chaotic enough without having to worry about spells gone wrong or denizens of madness stealing his senses. He drew the line at ghosts.

Knowing the Fairest was waiting, he briefly takes in his surroundings before packing the bump of cocaine he never had a chance to use at the Coronation. Anxiety and reservations are swept away with the rush of euphoria, though the high isn't as intense as his usual habit. He wanted to keep it professional.

With a vault, he disappears over the edge and stumbles into the Hollow not as gracefully as he would have liked.

Honestly, Abraham'd expect more grace from someone who not too long ago deftly manipulated glass into all manner of fancy shapes. Was there something unusual about the Elemental? Or did he just stumble, like everyone has the right to, from time to time?

"Fawkes!" He exclaims, cheerful (here's hoping the Torrent will pick it up without misinterpretation) "Good to see you. Before we get to talking, would you like some soup? Now, Yorick here" He inclines his head towards the reptilian remain "was not much of a conversation partner, but let me tell you - his meat makes for wonderful broth!"

The Flowering doesn't move from his post behind the bar. There'll be plento of time to do that, and he'd rather not backtrack if on waiter duty.

The roll is to spot the usual signs of cocaine use (large pupils, agitation, euphoria etc.) Although even if noticed Abraham won't know what caused them!

-2 from the right for 1 Success with Rigid Mask. I'll narrate this best I can with Abe comparing his previous interactions with Fawkes. If you feel it's a disservice, let me know.

The mannequin had not forgotten the Flowering's efforts to smooth his behaviour at the Spring Coronation. His initial hesitation vanished once he had crossed the precipice. He's far more casual in a black muscle shirt and jeans, and surprisingly fit.

"Hi Abraham," he responded evenly, following his slight gesture towards the Hedgebeast. "Oh. Um," he runs a hand through his hair, eyes flicking away from him, "have you ate that before? King Price explicitly has asked me to stop assuming things about the Lost here. I'm not implying you don't know what you're doing."

He speaks a little faster than he has before, whether it was a shift in confidence due to being one on one, or more nerves is unclear. He certainly had been bold in the Shady Lady and Winter bonfire. The Spring Coronation he had stayed to the edge and then found himself flanked by two Sovereigns before the strange display of power.

As the Elemental approaches the counter he tracks details around the bar, glass eyes appearing wider despite the lack of shift in his eternal relaxed expression.

"Mind if I light up?" the fact that he asked was novel. The Elemental was a walking chimney for those who knew him.

"Once" he answers the Elemental's concern "It's a nice mix of sweet and sour if that's what you'd like to try. I wouldn't offer you anything I didn't know is safe" The knight-errant is playing host today, after all, and serving poisonous food is just in poor taste.

There's an assortment of things that... look like clues, but are they really? Fawkes' eyes appear bigger and he speaks slightly faster than Abraham remembers. Could be something, could be nothing, but the Abraham's protective side cannot sit idly without asking "Is everything alright?"

The soup order still wasn't placed or explicitly denied, so Abraham doesn't cease his bar vigil, but his guest is another matter "Please, sit" He says "So, the Dragonslayers? Can't say I know much about them, except that they maintain an... unsavory reputation" He figures it's a business-related topic worth dwelling on for a while before getting to actual business. The Fairest does his best to keep things casual, allowing Fawkes to proceed at his own pace.

The Flowering waves dismissively "Of course I don't mind" He is not a big fan of cigarettes, but his personal preference holds no weight in this case.

I factored the Rigid Mask in, but funnily enough forgot about the Clarity penalty (-1). So yes, it's just 1 suxx. I think the narration is good!

Fwakes produces a cigarette and has it lit in one shift movement. Muscles memory at this point. He weighs Abraham's offer of hospitality against his own paranoia, and the fact that there was no Pledge in place unfortunately won out. "Thanks. Not hungry, though. Would be a waste."

Abraham asking on his condition marked the fourth Lost to ask him that generic question. He cocks his head, "I'm good. I'll be better once my Court is organized and I have a reason to trust the Lost that choose to stay in Sacramento." Richard had already had a firm discussion about him running his mouth, and the Fairest had given him a fair piece of advice in how to better get what he wanted.

He traces the wood of the counter after he sits, taking a drag as he parses what exactly Abraham wanted to know about that Entitlement. "Depends on who's running the show," he says, exhaling as he remembered the good and bad. "They focus on the destruction of threats. That can mean a lot of things. At best they are a Freehold's best asset against invasion as a professional police force. At worst they are the Inquisition. I operated with a chapter that kept specialists and deferred to them based on the situation. Are you dealing with a monster? The Gentry? Mundane? Or one of our own?"

Abraham appears entirely unfazed and certainly not offended by Fawkes' refusal "Suit yourself"

"A reason to trust... you are talking about an Oath, are you not? Does this imply you don't trust me?" He blinks at the Torrent, realizing how his words might be taken "Not to say I'm surprised or offended by that. Since we will probably wander into each other's pasts and plans today... would you be more comfortable with something simple in place?" Real basic. No fancy duties or boons, just a vow taken for the next day, week... month if Fawkes is extremely paranoid.

"And yet you left their ranks..." Not all questions need a question mark "What was your specialty?"

Communicating with Fairest wasn't a new experience. Fawkes knew there was a way to talk about his opinion without throwing a brick in the man's face, and expecting him to just accept that. His usual algorithm just depended on whether he gave a shit about someone's feelings. In this case Abraham came off as someone with his head on his soldiers, and the right idea of how to support a Freehold.

"Liking someone and trusting is two different topics," he says evenly, "Were you offering a Pledge? It's how I have been doing things with lack of Freehold Oath. I've recognized Sacramento has a way of doing things. I just can't ignore the logical application that under duress, caring for someone only goes so far. A Pledge doesn't control anyone's thoughts, but it let's us know when something's gone wrong. Like...I think if the Gentry targeted a loved one, I don't think it matters how upstanding the average person is."

He blinks as he scrapes the bit of ash off the counter, trying not to dirty the place with the small allowance. He rubs the white digits together as he squints at the grey smear,

"Um. I don't remember if you were listening to me talk at the bonfire. I know I don't have a loud presence. I had a moment in time where I guess I could no longer participate in a transitional Season. I needed to get involved. The Knights respected my opinion, and had me review their dockets while I came up with every single way a plan could go to shit. Educate. I'm not an academic. I have a general knowledge I apply to most situations where I specialize in the Hedge. You get that. There's a specific headspace I can occupy when considering the alien. Understanding the Thorns as an entity onto itself that can change on the dime."

"That is very true" He says on the issue of difference between trust and sympathy, raising a finger as if he made that point himself "Yes, I was offering a Pledge. Something simple - a day, a week. Also, since you are the Tavern's guest I say you propose the wording, if the whole idea suits you. If what John said at the Coronation is any indication, you are pretty adept at crafting them" Abraham knew a thing or two about Pledges himself, but like it was said - it's a matter of hospitality

"Ah, yes, I remember" Abraham's eyes flicker as if he indeed just remembered. It's true what Fawkes says - he doesn't have the loudest presence, especially compared to others that were there "The Winter... Talus, was it? You seemed unsure, when talking about his actions. Like even after all these years and seeying what you've seen you weren't exactly convinced that what he did was wrong"

"Were you in his place, knowing what he knew - what would you do?"

    Fawkes thinks on it.

He wasn't exactly a poet, but there was a time when his illness kept him from leaving the office. His old compatriots would gift him with books, trying to provide a healthier distraction other than agonizing over the mad patterns of movement in the Free Marches. Words fascinated him almost as much as music, eternally jealous of the way others could paint a picture with the quality of dictation; a simple speed and strength of vibration making all the difference.

The suggestion of simply a day or a week made the hair on the back of his neck stand up. The Leaden Mirror rarely toyed with the Wyrd for such an insignificant amount of time. Understandable Abraham—was of a Seeming defined by hubris. "A moon phase is traditional for short term agreements," he says airily, as if thinking out-loud.

"An alliance made on hollow'd ground,
I Pledge to thee while hands not be raised in violence,
My words carry truth and undoubted honour,
So we may carry on with peace between us with, until light of next full moon,
And let the traitor suffer for their deception—
A blood price taken with solemn dignity."

    Type: Oath, Changeling's decision
    Task: Alliance, Lesser (+0)
    Boons: Adroitness - Expression +1, Persuasion +1 (+2)
    Sanction: Vulnerability, Glamour (-3)
    Durance: 1 month (+1)

He spins the Pledge without much trouble, pausing between each statement to think, as if reciting a poem without emotion. The only indication he is making it on the fly is the gaps are a little longer than they should be. The Wyrd is not invoked, however, with Fawkes allowing for Abraham to review.

With Abraham's question, his body language noticeably stiffens as if he were bracing. He takes a long drag of his cigarette. Was his hand trembling? His expression however, remains serene,

"I'll answer that once we're done."
