(Night Stalkers) Take Care, Kid

Somber. Depressing. Hopeless.

It was that feeling of failure, that feeling of loss that came right after the realization that after the EKG screamed its last stuttering beeps and went flatline, after the cries of 'Clear!' and the jolts of electricity running through the meat sack that was undergoing its last transition from person to corpse. Elettra Vitale had turned away from the scene, from the harried ER doc calling time of death, from the big crash cart and its defibrillator being shut down, taking off her gloves, tossing them into the biohazard bin, leaving another little piece of her emotion behind...

She wasn't too old for this moment to still mean something.

She wasn't too old for the subconscious knowledge that she could save him to flow to mind. But there were Traditions. There were rules. There was the knowledge that she couldn't save everyone.

Not even a victim of some wannabes.

Not even one who suffered at the hands of pretenders.

He'd whispered to her, gibbering in fear of vampyres. But the bites on this homeless man's neck and wrists, where he'd been bleeding out his drugged lifeblood, those weren't Kindred. She knew it the second she saw it. She had asked 'where?', so quietly, touching his wrist. Feeling it, seeing it -- the Sight was as merciless as it was informative. The pain. The spurts of Blood. The hands on him, holding him down, the teeth, tearing into him, the needle slipping in --

An alleyway, on the outskirts of downtown. He whispered a street name.

Two plus two made four.

A call had been made, to the law. Atticus James, reporting for duty, with his Dragon companion Dirt Nap tagging along for the ride. Thomas had come along, too, ever curious, ever social, ever wondering.

Now, the four stood in shadows, staring down into the darkness of the alleyway where this unfortunate had met his gruesome end.

Welcome to Night Stalkers. This is a plot focusing on horror and the hopelessness of the human condition in the World of Darkness. The first two minutes of the linked music helps set the tone. Enjoy.

Thomas was actually glad he was contacted by Elettra for this matter. Not because he believes himself to be the right man for the job (even if he does) who stands to gain from it (definitely), but also because it involves rogue wannabe-Kindred apparently engaging in ritualistic behavior. With a more paranoid vampire - and those in power tend to excel at paranoia - this could lead to pointing fingers at the Circle. There's no way Thomas will allow that, not when his Covenant is in such good standing.

And so, he stands here with the other three Kindred, in a staring contest with the dark alley. He pushes his blood to smell better and see better, fighting the shadows around and attempting to discern if there's any blood to be found and if so, how many beings have shed it.

"Shall we?"

Elettra stands in the alleyway with the men who were called in to help find those who are responsible. Her rage is great, with the scene from the E.R. fresh in her mind. No one will do this in her domain and get away with it. There are laws for a reason and they must be held. Whoever did this will surely pay.

Atticus stands in the mouth of the alleyway looking to the scene of what happened. He was pissed and it showed on his face. He had theories as to what happened here, with hunters in town, with poachers in town, and who knows what other external threats may be there, it was a mess. One thing Atticus knew was that he was not a detective when it comes to scenes like this. Put him in a room and he would get what he needed.

Atticus looked around, "Spread out, see what you can find. Be careful where you step and try not to touch anything unless absolutely necessary." Atticus knew that kindred didn't leave fingerprints or much by the way of DNA. However with the hunters in town, as well as the crazy science that was out there, he didn't want to risk anything. Especially with this fake vampire.

The Ventrue and Gangrel find themselves lost in the obvious. Blood spatter, dried and long past providing sustenance, mostly cleaned but so, so obvious to a vampire. Remnants of police line tape from the night before, drifting in the cool winter's breeze from a little pipe on one wall of the alleyway that ran into a dead end. A sock, men's, dirty. Was it one of the homeless man's?

But Elettra Vitale, she sees past the obvious, past the things the police had left behind, past the things the Beast sought to draw attention to. A talented investigator in her own right, the night nurse who had seen this man's last breaths swept the scene.

The place of death, clear as day to her, in a particularly dried puddle of Blood concealed just behind a dumpster.

A little, worn out children's teddy bear, concealed along with a toothbrush in a little bag tucked into a wall nook a little down the way.

A Rubik's cube, tucked into the place where the forks would go to pick up the dumpster.

Blood spatter on the opposite wall? The angle on that was just weird, the rest was on the ground. Glancing over her shoulder, Elettra couldn't help but wonder - had this man defended himself?

Little hints of this man's life, of who he had been before the night had preyed upon him.

Thomas almost growls at the crime scene. Frustratingly useless. Uselessly frustrating. And so, he resorts to what he knows best: building a strong theoretical foundation to a practical problem. Careful not to step on any potential evidence, which would invoke the ire of Deputy James no doubt, he paces to and fro - humming, thinking. From what they know, the culprits weren't real vampires - merely impostors.

The Ventrue searches his memory for snippets of information of vampire cults established in the area, if any. Failing that, he thinks in more general terms: what are the common mystical practices of these foolish mortals? What would they hope to gain, aside from a thrill, from exsanguinating a man? Is there any common root to their beliefs, something that'd help them anticipate their next move?

"Have you found anything? I'm afraid I have nothing" He asks his partners in crime-solving.

"'k." Dirt Nap responds to Atticus' direction.

Dirt Nap has been quietly spending an extended period of time in the alley.

He first looks over the alley for anything informational, and spends most of his effort to locate an local animal, whether rat or cat or otherwise, which he will whisper to, asking if they saw or smelled any not humans (excluding the present company) that walked like humans, and if so which direction the trail went?

He also tries to see if the facts in evidence fit with any Occult practice or entity he has heard of.

"I see a lot of blood and a lot of trash, not much else." Atticus thought about heightening his sense of smell, but he knew what this kind of ally had in it. He'd pulled more than one person out of an alleyway like this.

Atticus looks around for any security cameras either at adjacent buildings or on a nearby post perhaps. "Elettra, you have anything?" Atticus asked, looking at her he could see that her gears were spinning.

"Atticus, there is just so much here! Right here behind the dumpster was where the homeless man died. And tucked right here in the notch where the forks go to pick up the dumpster is a Rubik's cube. Then, a little bit down here there's this bag with a teddy bear and a toothbrush. Finally, the blood spatter on the opposite wall, it just doesn’t seem right. I am going to get a closer look to see what my intuition tells me."

Trying to figure out which object she should choose first, she walks towards the dumpster and picks up the Rubik's cube. It is the item closest to the place of death maybe it was one of the last things he touched.
