(On the Hunt) Elk Grove Nights

Clara was surprised to see Krieg vanish. Tonight was a night for surprises apparently. The Bacchante murmured an agreement to Rebecca's sentiments for Mable. "We'll be counting on you!" She said cheerfully as she handed her wrist over to the Ventrue Whip. With her free hand she scooped up her backpack and handed all her equipment to Mable Wood . "There's a vest in there if you'd like it. Also a handgun. Not sure if that's your style, but what's mine is yours."

Clara mussed her hair and deliberately pulled the brunette mop of locks forward to cover half her face as she pulled up her hoodie up and over the bird's nest. The resulting appearance gave her a vagrant look she might play up or down depending on the situation. "Lead the way," she said and would play at being dragged but not actually make it anymore difficult for the Lord.

Ready to move forward if everyone else is?

"Ya, I can use a gun but def not my style." She giggles at the scene getting ready to unfold. "Good luck. I'm gonna go do tree work." She slings Clara's pack over her shoulder.

Krieg moves first, vanishing into the darkness and reconnoitring the two trailers. One is silent, dark, and closed up. The other is lit. A radio chatters dumbly into the void.

Mabel draws away to the shadowed tree line to make her inspection. There are some shrubs long in the ground at the boundary line: old and warped and wild. The trees and shrubs waiting to be planted are all appropriate for the climate and the area. Amongst them are some fruit trees that would surely produce a quiet little bounty given time and love.

It was a good thing the giant had donned the Cloak of Night. Four people are gathered around a plastic table, hidden from the view of the street by the bulk of the lit trailer. Four people enjoying the warmth of the evening and the chance of a light summery meal. Two men (one lean with a scraggly beard; the other broad shouldered with big hands) and two women (one aged and spare; the other thick with tattoos). They do not see and do not hear the mighty Haunt. But he hears them...

... They talk of the food ...
... They talk of turning the property back to farmland - they already have plans to get a stall going at a local market and using the produce for outreach programs ...
... Talk of Derrick comes up, bought by the aged woman. Scraggly Beard replies with a casual air that Derrick has been called away to a farm east of the city. Its not quite enough for the aged woman. It is the Tattooed Lady who deflects the conversation, adding that Derrick is working with some troubled kids who are doing drugs out in some old woods - and that he'll set them right. Gently circled, the debate is slowly closed...

Till the broad shouldered man gets up, hand raised for silence. Rebecca Simmons' voice floats through the air. The group get up and go around the trailer to investigate. Oddly, Krieg will note, Scraggly Beard heads back into the trailer rather than go around.

Clara picks up on a fair bit of the conversation herself as she and the Lord approach.

Rebecca Simmons' finds herself deaf and dumb in the night but even she can detect the murmur of conversation.

Obviously Clara and Simmons' approach is picked up too as three persons (Broad Shoulder Man, Aged Woman, Tattooed Lady) appear from around the trailer. Clara, with her improved vision, gets a hint of movement from within the trailer. Simmons' is much more focussed on her surroundings and notes it too: a spare figure watching from a well situated window - they would have been missed to a casual (or less focussed) observer.

"Can we help you?" That from Aged Woman.

"We got food on the table. Would you like to join us?" Broad Shoulder Man had a wonderfully honest smile.

Rebecca leaned into Clara's suggestion and ran with it. The Daeva Whip was bewildered momentarily. If she doesn't get an Oscar nomination for this performance...Clara blinked at the figures approaching. She tugged at her arm and forcefully pulled it back from Rebecca just as they approached. Clara heard movement just out of view, but couldn't quite say what it was. Yet.

She huffed and crossed her arms. The disobedient daughter took a step from Rebecca and tugged at the hoodie to further obscure her face. Her brown-hued eyes glanced at the trio and focused momentarily on the Broad Shouldered man. For the briefest of flashes, Clara would attempt to invoke a memory of sympathy in the Broad Shouldered man.

Then all at once, Clara turned away from the trio with a huff and stomped her foot into the dirt road.
