It is the height of summer. The full days are long and warm and bright. The darkness is banished to the furthest corners of the day and the afternoons and evenings linger, blending into one long and timeless moment. Moments such as this, long after closing time but with plenty of light in a brazen sky.
Funderland was surrounded by trees. Mature trees with wide canopies that rustled in the breeze and provided a tempting shade. Lost in the William Land Regional Park, the theme park's grounds were picaresque and wonderfully pleasant. The whole area was green and manicured wildness, suitable for the human herd who wanted to imagine an echo of the rural ideal without actually having to venture there.
Under the burnished summer sun, not too hot, the place held a sense of safety. Which was precisely why it now formed the heart of the Sacramento Freehold.
But wait! Whose is that unfamiliar car still parked across the way. Its burgundy red and a hatchback. Totally forgettable if it didn't sport a dark blue panel over its left wing. There are no other vehicles on this stretch of road, just opposite the theme park. The local Lost use the car park reserved for Funderland staff when they turn up after hours...
