There is definitely a traceable scent lingering on the photograph, even under the marshy smell of the creek mud. It's the same smell permeating the scene of the crime; the victim held that photograph. Matching lingering scent to a few tracks, its clear they head off in the opposite direction of the woods.
As Hector takes point on the trail of the victim/prey, it clearly draws them further into the woods. The decision for Viola to follow the Alpha or pursue her own lead hangs in the air.
