(Good Guys) Do Things the Right Way

Threats invade towns in different ways. They can terrorize the streets. They can lurk in the sewers. They can even hide in plain sight. But one force can find its way right into the very safety of your home, and that's the media.

"Tonight's top story: more reports of violence by "the Volunteers", the local vigilantes killing criminals and cleaning the streets, or at least that's what they'd like the public to think. Two more deaths have been reported..."

A threat doesn't disappear on its own, it only grows worse with time. While the media may have decided not to focus on any rumors of vampires (though was it really any street level reporter's decision to drop that kind of angle?) the Kindred of the city should not ignore the rumors. Questions asked in shadowy rooms and alleys wondered about where these Volunteers laid their heads to rest after an evening of slaughtering the seedy under belly of Sacramento. All that was found though was a storage unit on the east side of town.

The storage unit itself was no more unusual than any other place of its kind. All the units were outside, with what appeared to be one camera at the gate. The gate was blocked by a very simple button prompt, but the walls around the facility weren't exactly a border fence. It was as non-descript as any old storage unit could be. But then came the question of what was being held inside? What secrets would the right unit reveal?

I know a couple scenes are still talking about the vigilantes. Remember this isn't a sticky, so whichever finishes first happened first. So that a separate scene for "planning" doesn't have to take place, there's an empty alleyway right across the street from the place where a potential meeting can take place (or however you all would like to handle it). The scene can then play out how you guys would like from there. While those with allies have extra knowledge, we can assume everyone has heard about the vigilante threat via the news.

David Regan is no stranger to Self-Storage Parks. In fact, his mailing address for Vincent Temple, for colleagues back in Minnesota, this is the most permanent address the Shadow holds. Which is a bit of a cold comfort as mail has a habit of getting lost in transit and packages – if they make it to him at all – arrive in less than pristine condition. In that, it illustrates the mutability of Location.

Location is not the only thing that is mutable. How a person perceives him is also something that can be shaped and molded to his whim. And with David's own identity being so bland and forgettable it is frightfully easy. David moves through the rows of shuttered doors with elegant precision, looking every bit a Security Guard as he walks around the periphery of the units to get a feel for the place. The Shadow heard the rumors, they flowed over the patterns that make up causality like a gold strand and it brought him out, because curiosity demands it; because he feels obligated to.

Finished with the quick scan of the place, checking for any obvious traps, David heads for an empty alleyway across the street however he stays just outside of its embrace while considering his next move.

One doesn’t have the amount of connections she had in criminals to not have heard the talk going around. Some of her contacts were getting a little nervous, worried not only about their business but safety as well. Plus, people were supposed to fear them, not some random kids playing vigilante. Nope…it needed to be looked into and dealt with.

Having those connections nervous hurt her business, hence why she found herself out at the storage place, checking things out. Well, checking out what she could, stealth and all that stuff really wasn’t her thing.

Once again, she was dressed in mostly black. It was a forgiving color, and easily hid blood, cause there was no telling where the night would go. The only bit of color being a sweater and her red lips. The car is parked a few blocks away before walking to the storage place and checking it out.

She notes the gate, and figures there might be a security camera, depending on if this place cared about its customers or not. If they did, it was a small hitch in the night, one she wasn’t sure how she would deal with yet.

Dark eyes search the area and settle on an alley across the street. Would be a good place to lay low and see what kind of traffic the storage place might have at night.

As she gets close, she spots someone, which slows her steps. This allows her the chance to push the blood through her dead body. Her skin becomes flush with life while her lungs fill with air.

Relevant Rolls

This is not Cross's first time approaching the storage unit facility that everyone seems to be talking about. He's driven by multiple times, slowly, eyeing the place. He's even spent an hour or two on a previous night sitting in his vehicle, just watching.

Patience pays. And tonight, he feels confident as he parks his car a few blocks away, knowing exactly what he's getting into on his first approach by foot. Still, he's not so confident that he doesn't take precautions. Making sure the street is clear after shutting his door, he crouches next to his vehicle and wraps the shadows about himself.

He makes his way down the street, toward the storage units or, more precisely, the alley he'd cased out across the street, careful to keep out of range of the security camera. He's wearing all black: black jeans, a baggy black sweater pulled over his kevlar vest, black tennis shoes, and a black ski mask he's got rolled up and perched on his scarred head as a kind of skull cap, not that anyone can see him or his outfit. He's also strapped with his 9mm and his Big Ass Hunting Knife, both hidden in their own right by metaphysical means.

As he approaches, the Burned Man first spots his Ale, his fellow Deputy, as beautiful as ever, making her way for the same alley. Seems the savage has had the same idea. Nothing like a woman who spends her nights surveilling... Unseen, he follows close behind her, waiting until they're both hidden away to reveal himself. It's at that moment that he realizes someone else is already standing in the entrance of the alley, though he's not quite able to make out who...

Unfortunately for David this is not his storage space. Fortunately though, his disguise works so perfectly that there's no doubt in the one man night manager's mind that David belongs...even if he can't seem to remember the guy's name. As he wandered the rows he saw that it's actually a smaller operation. Three rows, small units all the way up to large size units, sit dividing the area evenly. They all have clear numbers that should make it easy to find the right unit...if they knew what it was. Strange enough there are two cameras in the back area, but the lights seem to be off. Are they just for show or have they been tampered with by someone? David of course is not sure which.

Cross on the other hand thought ahead in a different way and followed the advice of Chris Partlow by showing up early to scope the location out so no one could surprise him. Of course, he'd have to think on what he saw during his surveillance to determine if any of it would be helpful for his current investigation.

unlimited sink roll Int+Inv to figure out if any of what you saw during these times are relevant. You can do it as an extended roll with a max of Att+Skill. That'll be the number of nights in advice you showed up to watch.

What Robert does remember is that once or twice a night a different person would show up with a bag, go through the gate, then leave with the same bag, though it always appeared to be full when he left. It appeared each time they went into the second row of units, but he could never tell where. On the last night of surveillance though he was able to catch a distinct sound with his advanced hearing. To him it sounded as if the unit accessed was either unit 120, 122, 123, or 125, but he wasn't able to narrow it down from there.

It was just one of those days for Jacob.
Nothing short of wanderlust really, but he had nothing else planned. An audio textbook droned sullenly in his ear, a manufactured monotone that slipped effortlessly into his perfect memory. A flash of red from an alley caught his attention, the presence inside of it was what truly caught his attention. It screamed, and Jacob took a step back in shock. He hadn't expected to see one of their kind and neither had his Beast. He crossed the street towards the entrance to the alley, got a glimpse of the tattoos and recognized a Deputy. He closed his eyes, heightening his sight, and opened them to a clearer world. The burnt face of the other Deputy was clear now. Curiosity warranted a chat. While hardly sneaking, he approached softly and spoke the same way "A fine night. How does it find you two?"
He saw a security guard as well, narrowing his eyes to take a look...

Alessandra, or rather the Beast that co-opts her name, causes the Shrike to stand up and to take notice. Anger flows through David's veins like electricity, but its white-hot heat burns far hotter than the two ghosts of nuclear fission or burning coal. Head lulling to the side, David murders the impulse before it can truly take root. The Shrike has sniffed at Alessandra's weak beast before and measures were taken. She is not a question and it is that familiarity that allows it to be controlled. Tonight, is a night of information gathering. It is the first step towards survival, something even the Shrike can possibly appreciate.

As the impulse ebbs away, David considers breaking his disguise to alert Alessandra and then Maddox to his presence.

He doesn't, instead David heads back towards where the Night Manager is ensconced, comfortable and probably bored. How the manager reacted towards David the Security Guard, was a tale-tell sign that the change in perception to the man was too good to simply let up. It would be a way to get the others inside and to get information that the others wouldn't be able to get otherwise.

The Savage knows the face, she’s seen him in Court before, but the name? Now that escapes her. Though it was nice not to have to deal with her Beast, thanks to that skill some Kindred possess.

“Ah, not too bad, can't complain.You?” asks the Italian.

She decides to activate her heightened senses and glance back across the street. Looking for any movement or anything out of the ordinary. Well, besides two Kindred scooping the place out.
