Green quaffs his drink with a thoughtful air.

"Have faith in the Ice Law. Learn to trust those who have it - above and below you. Yeah, I know you're kinda at the bottom right now, doesn't mean it will stay that way, yeah? There is a lot of... stuff... out there; and a lot of things have many moving parts. There will be times when you won't have all the info. Other Courtiers will have more. Sometimes they can fill you in; sometimes they can't."

He paused, then continued.

"Our Court is practical. You want to earn your place? Offer to do stuff. Nothing out of the way, nothing special. Just offer what you're good at. Thats how I started. Recognition will come."

He stared at the Wizened then, but decided not to talk further. Beer was always a good thing to hide behind.

L’aire agreed with a sage nod. Evelynn was doing well, at least she thought so. “And know that all of us did have to learn this bit by bit. For some things, it came naturally. Myself the empathy for those who felt sorrowful was easy. I could relate to many of our Court’s thoughts. There were other things that I found difficult, but slowly they came to fruition.”

“And I learned that even if I had nothing in common with the other Courtiers, there was one thing that I did; Winter. It’s many shapes, forms and feelings that it holds have a place in us all.”

Even if the Fairest felt like a silly Hallmark card, she did believe in what she was saying.

“Keep in mind, that if anything should take a turn for the worst, that is also where we Winters are helpful. We can provide places to hide if necessary. We are the Silent Arrow, but like arrows, our strikes are at a distance so that we may help others in the wake of anything going south.”

“You don’t have to be sad or cause sadness,” he said with a small smile. It was true that sorrow informed the actions of Winter more than the other emotions but it was towards the purpose of never having to feel it again to the depths they had already experienced. Not every courtier did of course. Some reveled in their depression and some avoided dealing with the issues by inflicting them on others. Everyone dealt with sorrow in their own way.

“Preparing your farewells is a lot harder than you might initially think. You need to be prepared to sacrifice your life.” Metaphorically and literally. You had to be ready to leave everything and everyone and move if the situation called for it. You also had to be able to say final goodbyes and lay down your life to save others. Sometimes farewell meant leaving, sometimes it meant standing your ground.

Eyes wide, Evelynn's gaze darted from person to person as they explained their own thoughts on Winter and what important. It was as if she could swallow more information if she stared more intently.

"Thank you, I'll try to keep all of those things in mind."

She fiddled with her drink, looking down at the cup for a long moment while she considered what was said. What advice they had. "I think... the goodbyes might be hardest. Preparing them, I mean. I was never very good at saying goodbye," she admitted softly. The idea of laying down her life wasn't nearly as bothersome as she might have thought. If she could - if it was useful to do so, if it would save others - then she could do that, she thought. Or at least, she hoped. The problem there lay in doing so without it being a waste. She had not the strength nor the prowess to serve as anything more than a nuisance to anything that might hunt her fellows. Was that a weakness? Or did that just mean she served another purpose?

"Its never easy," Green agreed. "Its a bit of mental training... Developing a tough hide... And knowing yourself. Thats about as much preparation as one can do. Ok. You can keep a travelling kit in a safe place so you can move at a moments notice, yeah? But really... There will come a time, like, a moment. When something happens and when you know you got a choice to make. Might never happen. Might happen tomorrow. Thats what its all about."

She could more than just relate to what Evelynn stated. “The reason for that statement isn’t exactly saying goodbye.” L’aire had thought a long time about what she was thinking. “It’s about those times when you won’t be able to say it. When someone just up and leaves town. When someone says they’re going on a journey and never return. Its these times that Winter prepares us for.”

“Essentially, what Malcolm said applies to what I said. Cautiously forming bonds with people that may not be there tomorrow.” As much as the Fairest loved her friends Rick and Terri, that was in the forefront of her mind each time she saw them.

“Our laws about hiding your love and hate is for protection, of ourselves. If we hide the love and keep it at a distances, it prepares us for not being hurt later.” She’d learned hard lessons, but John’s was still among the most difficult one apart from her mother.

“But, don’t let these things stop you from doing things you want to do. The bottom line; caution is key.”

We’ve hit the month mark, we can wrap it, or if there are pertinent things, we can continue.
