Arthur

He turned as sharp as an old man could to the tall gent. “Sure, sure!” He sounded excited; the gleam in the old man’s eyes wasn’t just happy, but hopeful and relieved. “Well, if you decide. I’ll stay on a bit to help you through things for a while.” He would have a hard time letting it go, but the sadness was getting to him along with his age.

“During the summer and fall. It’s not often the whole place is booked, but once in a while it happens. But usually one to two rooms a night through that whole time has travelers.” His finger quickly rose, extending his creaky bones. “Oh, don’t be surprised if a whole family or party of people rent this place out. It happens sometimes, reunions, get togethers, ya know, that good stuff.”

Arthur turned and swallowed hard. “Uh, well miss. That…” He paused long and hard and looked longingly at the doorway. “was my wife’s office. It’s probably full of menus, more books from travelers and pictures from people who stayed here.”

Motioning to a box by the rest of the hanging keys. “You can grab the key and go in there if you want miss.”

Sorrow, it was hard not to feel it in the quaint inn. She knew her fellow Onyx could feel it too. But she at least, would not take his Glamour. L’aire was not greedy anyway, and it would seem wrong to do so, especially if he’d be here for a while.

She looked at Evelynn and nodded. It was oddly curious to her as well.

On this occasion Green resisted the urge to move, for he too had noticed the unusual arrangement that Evelyn had spotted. He remained quiet, apparently absorbed in the bookshelf - though a flicker of his eyes to L'Aire would have suggested something different - and totally uninterested in an old office.

Sometimes being Onyx meant passivity. As passive as the snow that blanketed the midwinter earth. Let someone else go digging around in a room set aside as a shrine by one who still mourned.

Daniel tried to respect the dead the way other people did. He really did try. But where other people and most Changelings were horrified at the idea bringing back ghosts, uncomfortable with talking about lost loved ones, and uninterested in digging up graves to see what was inside, Daniel was not one of those types of people. And certainly not in this case. Curiosity urged him to investigate what was the sorrow the man kept hidden behind the door.

He placed the book back on the shelf and took up the key, giving Evelynn a smile. This wasn't her responsibility after all but if she still wanted to know the answer to the question, she didn't have to feel guilty by being the one to open the door and disturbing the delicate memories stored there..

He turned the lock and looked inside.

Evelynn looked, for a moment, like a deer caught in headlights once Arthur explained about the office. She hadn't meant to dredge up painful old memories, and she hadn't meant to effectively ask if she could root around in Arthur's memories of his dead wife. Her cheeks stained bright red and she looked obviously upset with herself and she opened her mouth to apologize, only the words wouldn't quite come.

The moment of silence was weighing heavily on her, so when Daniel moved to take the keys and took the lead with investigating the office, she returned his smile with a grateful one of her own, embarrassment and discomfort still burning on her face as she followed him to the door.

The door swung open silently, revealing undisturbed memories, and Evelynn felt a faint sort of reverence take hold of her, like that feeling that one gets when approaching the casket at a funeral.

Still more items, file cabinets and adorned this office just like the other. But, there were more personal belongings within this. Daniel’s eyes would eventually be drawn to two suitcases that were by the desk collecting dust. One that may have been from the 70’s, the other possibly newer and more so from the 90’s.

Evelynn’s attention was caught instantly to a brooch pinned at the top of the bulletin board. It had a particular glint about it, often akin to something that was blessed by the Wyrd. There was also a safe within the office, but not the typical one, nor the same type as in Arthur’s office. This one was smaller and older.

L’aire respectfully stood by Malcolm. Glancing in the office area, she wondered what either of them would see or find. Doubtful anything was truly a treasure, but who knows what it contained. “It feels very homey in here, doesn’t it Malcolm?”

Arthur took a deep breath as the door opened. He turned away from the office, smiling to Malcolm and L’aire. It may have been difficult, but his face was relieved that he didn’t have to do this by himself. He simply waited, but ready to answer questions if necessary.

"Yeah. Its got a good vibe, I think."

Green replied in a conversation tone, turning his back on the bookshelves.

"It must be hard to walk away from a place with so many memories," he ventured, hint of respect tinging his voice. "Eh. You ready to move on?"

Daniel circled the room, running his hand along the file cabinets as if he could gain knowledge of their contents through touch. He passed over the bulletin board, eventually moving over to the desk after noticing the brief cases. One had to be almost 45 years old if he were to guess. He tested the latches to see if he needed a key of combo to open either of the cases.

Evelynn nearly made her way directly over to the safe, but for two things - first, the brooch distracted her entirely, and second, she felt it might be inappropriate to go rifling through a safe that Arthur had not given her any sort of permission to open. So, eyes wide and burning with curiosity, she made a beeline for the brooch, brushing past Daniel as she went. Gently, carefully, she unpinned it from the top of the bulletin board and began to turn it over in her hands, seeking out whatever might have marked it with the Wyrd, or any other power for that matter.

Arthur

“Well, I may not be ready to move on, but my body says it’s time.” He said with a long definitive sigh. “Besides, I’d like to see a couple places in the world before I am not able to travel.”

He only glanced to the two in the office, not blaming them for being curious. Arthur didn’t have the heart to look into the room. But, he did call out to Evelyn. “Miss, if that butterfly is still there, you can have it. The woman never came back for it. Left in a hurry. My wife tried calling the number that was left, no one ever responded.”

Of the briefcases, one needed a key, the other a combination but either looked like they could be popped open, given enough force.

“Well, what else do we need to see? The ballroom, kitchen and restaurant?”

L’aire

The Fairest was curious as to what Daniel and Evelynn saw within the small office. But not enough to tail behind them. It was far too small to crowd any further, and eventually she’d find out what they were looking at.

Daniel could probably jimmy the lock if he got a paper click. Or if he forced it open. Doing so didn't seem right though. Being offered a key and let inside was one thing. Picking a lock was another. So the Darkling left the briefcases where they were and exited the room to join back with the others.

"Kitchen and restaurant sounds interesting," he said. He'd never really been 'behind the scenes' at either the Blue Note or Rose Garden. It'd be cool to see what it might be like.
