(Shell Game) Signs of the Times

Things exist in this word beyond mundane cognizance. Ancient Magics work behind the scenes and creatures of the night stalk the unwary. Unseen worlds exist alongside this one, permeating every facet of reality and making some question their own ability to know - truly know - fact from fiction. Amid the deluge of false sightings and hoaxes are always a few gems of truth; the familiar legends and fairy tales are never entirely accurate, yet are closer to reality than most are comfortable admitting.

Some things - some threats - don't exist in songs and stories. No heroes of old have discovered ways to deal with them; no libraries of occult knowledge are dedicated to them. One of these threats has taken root here, in Sacramento.

Off the Western bank of the Sacramento River, near the skeletal twists and twines of new construction and burgeoning industry, amid scattered suburbs and small businesses sits a lonely little dive called Dave's. A brick front wall, neon sign and an American flag face the street. It's never very busy, even during happy hour, save for a few regulars. Every night except Sunday - because Dave doesn't do Sundays - workers from a local textile factory make up the majority of the bar's patronage. The factory, not more than a block up the road, has no signs or company logo. It looks like it may be under new construction - or was never really finished - with scaffolding still erected in seemingly random places. At nearly nine stories tall, with it's smoke stacks churning grey smoke into the air and an odd chute running from the top level to a hub across the street, it cuts an intimidating profile even from a distance. A sleeping dragon.

Business is slow tonight. Dave, a man in his forties with a bit of a paunch and a salt and pepper crew-cut, grabs a glass stein and pours a Bud Light. He's got a steady hand; he's been doing this for twenty years. He's owned it ever since his brief stint with the Marines. Lost the fitness vibe but kept the haircut. That's what he tells people, anyway. He sets the beer in front of a stocky, surly looking man at the bar. He wearing grey coveralls like the only other two patrons at the bar tonight. Another man with a smoker's cough and a bad hunch plays a game of darts while a third man - wiry, bookish type with glasses - sits at one of the bar's three booths drinking tap water and looking over paperwork.

Hunching over, the man appears in his forties if not older. His hair is disheveled, his expression bizarre between glee or malice. His frame is thin and clothes ragged or stained, smelling worn and unwashed.
    Mein

His skin is gray like stone and his features more exaggerated, his eyes more set apart. Wings curl around his shoulders, unusable but expressive, as is his short tail. Horns adorn his brow and curl along the contour of his skull. He is what many would describe to be a gargoyle.

Despite being a poor old bum, Gregory is still able to afford himself the occasional swill to forget his troubles. And nothing is more affordable than Dave's dive bar. Gregory had only recently discovered the establishment and knew little about its history or regular crowd. But he figures his money is just as good as theirs even if the beer isn't as good anywhere else.

The Gargoyle came clothed in a ratty gray suit that has seen some wear even though it is only a couple months since he got the set from the homeless shelter. Hidden under a flat cap, Gregory doesn't mind any looks he gets. He's just a middle-aged lanky hunched man with a weathered look about him, the type that most tend to give no mind. He takes a position at the bar and sets down a few bills. "Whatever's on tap, if you please," he requests of the bartender in a rasping voice, eyes staring up from beneath a lowered rim.

To human eyes he looks slightly taller than average, with a lean, athletic build. His brown skin gives away his Mohawk ancestry, complementing his equally brown eyes and dark hair. He displays a military-styled haircut, shorter to the sides, and sports a few scars across his body and a particularly visible one in the form of claw marks across his face and neck. A very intense scent of forest, a mixing of pine needles, tree sap, and animal fur, characterizes him.
    Mien

Those who can see through the Mask observe black-and-white feathers to the sides of his face, that fuse seamlessly with his skin and hairline and close to his golden eyes. His teeth are unusually sharp, displaying fangs that are hard to categorize as belonging to a specific predator, although they most closely resemble a wolf's or some other canine's.

Dave's. The sign might as well have read "CHEAP BEER. ALL LOSERS WELCOME." He had been scouting out Sacramento's most affordable establishments. It was a strange practice, he was more than willing to admit. He needed to drown his sorrows without actually getting too drunk. Enough alcohol and the beast was out and he started doing weird shit. And he couldn't afford to be off his guard these days, no sir, not with the people who were after his trail lately. Places like this one? The beer wasn't expensive. It was also 90% water. What more could you ask for?

Plus, adventure! Whatever happened to having a decent bar fight, biting someone's fingers off? No one had any standards anymore. So he went in, whistling Sweet Home Alabama under his breath. It seemed somehow appropriate. At night, there was something oddly disturbing about the place, at least when you looked at it from outside. Inside... Well, the sights made him glad he hadn't gone into construction. No girls, but that's probably for the better too. Wine, women, and music. Weird shit. But was that...?

"Hey," he sat next to Gregory, extending a hand for him to shake. "I'll have whatever he's having," he told the bartender.

Solidarity had never killed a soul. Well, actually...

"Nathan Griffin," rasps Gregory, looking up and over at what had dragged itself in out from the street. "I did not think to see you here. But you be welcome all the same." Gregory looks back down to the counter top, caked in a questionable film that marred its luster. "Seems the drink keeps calling me back. But no worse than taking medicine to dull an ache. And what ails you, friend, to seek such medicine?" And so he is a friend of sorts. Coming to his aide before Coco's fury, standing his ground before Gentry, a trusted shield of the Freehold he is.

Tally enters within the place called Dave. It's not long before she picks out Gregory and Nathan, she approaches the two. "Good evening Gregory. Nathan, it's been a while." She greets the two with a smile.

"I hope you both have been well today." She muses. "Mind if I join you?" She asks politely.

Tessa didn't normally have much to do with her free time. She wasn't one for reading, despite keeping a mishmash of books around her tenement. She didn't own a tv either, too expensive, and establishments weren't always fond of her hanging around just to watch whatever was on at the time. And she may have an appetite but that didn't keep her from actually getting full, though eating wasn't considered a hobby anyways. One thing she did like to do, though, was explore. You wouldn't think it of a girl her size but she could be rather athletic when she wanted to. Perhaps it was part of her animal side, a need to scout out the surrounding territory and find other possible hidey holes, but she always like to look around places, usually on foot as cars were another luxury she couldn't afford. So imagine her delight to find this up-and-coming part of town full of half built businesses and scaffolding.

After living a life mostly in the trees running from things that do a lot more than go bump in the night, you tend to find yourself fond of high places. Or at least, that was how it worked in Arcadia and such memories carried over here on Earth. And though people generally didn't approve of you clambering all about there expensive equipment, well... people didn't usually look up, she was pretty good at hiding, and this was one time when her lack of presence worked in her favor. So she had arrived to this part of town dressed lightly in a navy blue tank top and khaki shorts, her hair down up in a ponytail to be out of the way. After all, you wanted to be dress for activity when climbing about worksites, your favorite sneakers instead of your best heels. She even had brought a backpack with some water bottles and her lunch.

But the day had worn down, her lunch was long gone, and she was done exploring both the vertical and horizontal of this neighborhood. Now was a good time for a quick place to just sit down and have a greasy burger or two. Luck was on her side today as there just so happened to be a place perfect for that. Dave's. You probably couldn't get much more generic than that. But it was close and the food was probably as cheap as it comes and she wasn't too picky about the quality. Even luckier, she was surprised to find she actually knew two of the patrons as well, though she didn't recognize Tally. With this much luck, she couldn't help but wonder if there might be a dose of bad luck waiting for her as well. She plopped down in a seat on the other side of Gregory, setting her backpack down beside her before retrieving a bottle of water from it.

"Gregory! Nathan! Fancy meeting you here. I hope I'm not interrupting anything. What brings you to this place?" She signaled to the bartender. "If you guys have burgers or sandwiches or something, I want two of them."

As one might expect, no one so much as bats an eye as Gregory walks in. Well, except for Dave. He knows how to run a business. And business is business as long as you don't come in and break things. He smiles and grabs another stein.

"Sure. Ran outta Blue Moon, but I've got plenty Bud Light left." As sets about pouring another beer, a familiar song breaks the relative silence. Nathan's whistling earns a look from the surly man at the bar. The look borders on annoyance, but the man returns to his cup without a word. Dave sets down the filled mug down in front Gregory and gives Nathan a nod.

"Another Bud Light, then." he says, sounding a little cheerful. The grizzled vet moves with just a little more pep in his step as business picks up. Before long, Tally and Tessa join them, but the surly man doesn't deign to look up this time. From over their shoulders, the hunched man chimes in with his raspy smoker's voice.

"Aw Dave, you didn't tell us tonight was ladies' nigh-- His joke is cut short by a pitiful sounding cough. The man covers his cough and turns his head. He tries to hold his smile in place and finish the joke, but eventually gives up and waves it off, turning back to finish his coughing fit and his game of darts.

"Normally close the kitchen pretty early..." Dave says, looking at Tessa apologetically. Eventually he sighs, nodding and seeming to give in. Having more than twice the normal amount of customers probably has something to do with it. "Guess I can whip up a couple burgers. You want cheese?"

With Dave out of sight - off in the kitchen probably heating the grill - the surly man at the bar speaks up, mostly to himself. "No fucking point anymore. Ask a guy for one small thing and he blows you off. Looks at you like you're crazy. Playing dumb..."

"Frank, let it go. He probably just forgot." the smoker calls out. Judging by his tone, this is a pretty regular occurrence.

"I won't 'let it go'! Brookfield's been working there longer than you have. He knows how they get. I'm lucky to... to still have a job!" Frank practically slams down his mug, sloshing some of it dangerously close to landing on poor Gregory.

What's wrong with that guy? A fellow Yankee, maybe? Wouldn't it be hilarious if he started a fight for whistling the wrong song at the wrong time?

"The threat of impending death," he answered Gregory, half-joking.

Two more Beasts come in. He remembers them vaguely from previous encounters. After some effort, he remembers Tessa from the watch incident, but he can't quite place the other.

"Not at all," he smiles. "You're both welcome. As for what brings me here, well, it's mostly just the alcohol," he looks apologetically at the other Hunterheart. "Sorry, where did we meet again?"

He nods to the bartender in thanks and takes hold of the Bud Light. Funny, the guy looked like he had seen some action himself. Although that was probably true of most people around this part of town.

He starts getting wary when Hulk begins to sulk. And when he makes beer splash on Gregory, well, Nathan instinctively puts his arm around him in a protective gesture. He also has a very hard time reining in his annoyance.

Gregory nods to the women as they enter. "Tally, Tessa. Fair fortune to find you here. I came to drink and to sit so as not to further contort my aged back," he admits with a tap of his fist against the curve of his spine. "You be both well, I take it? Yes, please, as you like it, sit with me," he answers to Tally.

The Gargoyle does not mind the grumblings of the neighboring men or their conversation. But the sudden thrusting of Nathan's arm around him startles him and he brings up his own hand reflexively. "T..that be quite alright, Nathan. There's no harm done. Tis not the way that hearts be won."

"Apologies, Frank, be it? He dotes upon me, I'll admit."

"Tessa." Tally greets the the other woman, flashing her a smile. She says to Nathan, "Likely during one of the parties."

With them both saying it was good, she does so. "So, how good are the burgers here?" She asks curiously.
