(Bibliophile) The Bridge Burner

Daniel remained seated and non-threatening until Garth had exited his vehicle. Getting up he let Lynn do the talking. He was here mostly as back up to her right now. Plus if she introduced them, that spared him having to tiptoe around the issue of his name.

Seeing the German Shepard also get out of the truck did make him a little nervous but he kept his features calm. It was another factor and potential attacker if things turned south. Daniel was not especially good with animals and reading their behavior, at least the more subtle stuff. He was much better with people, so he kept his attention on Goyle.

Marcus unslings his rucksack and settles in for what could be a long wait. He's just about ready to dip into some of the beef jerky he brought when the pickup truck arrives. Closing his eyes and placing his hands over his ears, the metalflesh tries to concentrate on the sensations he is experiencing via the satellite dish.

Morgan stayed quite still, letting the shadows stay wrapped around her. Unlike Marcus, she had no supernatural advantage to help hear things. So, she just strained her ears instead whilst her eyes judged the distance to Goyle and his dog in case she had to throw sharp things at them. She really hoped she didn't. She also couldn't pick up much at this distance either.

The dog's head turns towards the general area that Marcus hid, dark eyes staring for a couple of seconds, no doubt making the Elemental wonder if he had been spotted. However, as the dog turns back to look at Lynn and Daniel without a growl or bark, it seems he remains hidden.

"That right?" Garth replies, closing the door to his pick-up and lifting up his cap to scratch his head, revealing plastic, yellow hair. The cap is replaced quickly as his thumbs tuck into his workman's belt, which holds various tools of the trade; screwdrivers, a hammer and some wrenches. "And who exactly are you looking for?"

"Horace Albert Liebowitz" Lynn tilted her head and took a slight step forwards, shifting her weight from one leg to the other. This was starting to feel more and more like a scene from a bad mobsters movie. She just hoped that they could keep things friendly. This guy was their only lead and it would do their cause great harm if they couldn't get his information willingly. She hadn't been there for the initial attack from Fairweather, but she had made a point of learning more since she first got started on this little quest.

"Word on the street is that you're either working with him or know where he is. We'd like to talk to him."

There was certainly a twitch on the Elemental's plastic face when Lynn mentioned that name, forcing him to turn away and move to the rear of the truck to work on untying the tarp.

"Sorry, babes, whatever street it was you were walking on has got it wrong."

Strong fingers tugged effortlessly at the knots, pulling free a long piece of old rope. The dog looked from Lynn to it's owner without moving from where it sat. Some seconds passed in silence as Goyle wrapped the rope around his muscular arm so as to stow it away.

"What do you need to talk to him about, anyway?" he finally asked, poorly feigning interest.

Everyone has said that they're going to let Lynn do the talking, so I'm gonna answer out of turn. Let me know if that's wrong.

Lynn shrugged and walked forwards a couple steps so that she didn't have to shout. She'd caught that Goyle recognized the name, but on the other hand, if you lived anywhere around a claimed area and didn't know the names of the Court's leaders, you'd have to be fairly stupid. And Goyle didn't strike her as stupid.

"We're interested in some of the books we believe might be in his library. We'd like to talk to him about taking a look, maybe work out some sort of exchange." She let a slow smile cross her face. "And of course, we'd be willing to compensate whoever it was who went to the hard work of setting up a meeting." She waved her hand at the antennas and bags of bits. "We even went to the trouble of bringing a getting to know you present."

48 hours...

As Garth finished rolling up the rope, he dropped it into the cab, his eyes gliding over the 'present' that Lynn was talking about. "It's certainly tempting even if I was, you know, interested in such stuff. Ok, ok, let's say, I don't know," the Elemental considered crossing his thick, muscular arms and leaning against the door of his truck, "that I have any clue about what you're talking about. Let's say I do know some dude called Horace and let's say, for simplicity's sake, I take you to where he could very well be. What then?" He eyed her up, a small smirk on his face. "I can't help but sense a touch of Spring about you, babes. That tells me you and your quiet, much colder friend here," Goyle gestured towards Daniel with a nod of the head, "have come from behind your ivory tower. Something tells me to do that, you have gotta be desperate to get into that library, right? Desperate enough to do anything, right?" The smirk remained and turned into something more knowing. "So, basically, how far are you willing to go to get what you want?"

Daniel decided to interject a little. The conversation was turning out to be too cloak and dagger. If the speaking continued in hypotheticals and talk around his purpose her as truth teller would be pretty much negated. They needed Garth to speak more plainly. They needed him trust them. Lynn hadn’t even introduced them yet.

“This is Lynn and you can call me Daniel Leto,” Daniel paused hoping he hadn’t pushed the goblin contract too far. It wasn't really false. Garth could call him whatever he liked. “or ‘Cold Friend’ if you like. I have a feeling you already know how desperate we are. That ivory tower you mentioned, it burned with the Four Seasons. A dragon set it on fire and we have very little information on the best way to defeat it and it could attack again at any time. So yeah, pretty damn desperate.”

Daniel’s voice remained serenely still as he took several steps forward to be even with Lynn.

“Can’t make any promises without knowing exactly what you need to do to burn some bridges,” it would be unwise to bind a pledge to the Elemental before knowing the full extent of what he might expect from them “but I can assure you we are willing to go quite a ways.” Beyond death if need be, but Daniel didn’t say that. Letting Goyle know just how determined they were would give him an extreme advantage in negotiation. Who knew what he would demand. As it stood, Daniel hoped he hadn't weakened their position too much. They needed this deal though, and Garth already knew that. Hopefully bitter truth would buy them more credit than honeyed lies.

“As you can already see” he indicated the equipment behind them “we are willing to help you with your goals and we are willing to do more, if you can take us to see HAL.” Daniel’s mantle swirled gently with the scent of wet dust.

Lynn glanced over and raised one eyebrow as Daniel joined her. That wasn't the tactic she would have chosen, but she was willing to back his play. Turning back to Goyle, she waited for his response.
