It was there in the darkness of the forests outside of Sacramento that Peter Baldwin found himself, cold eyes staring into the hole that he had dug with a shovel and his mighty arms. All was quiet. The infected, partially-drained and thoroughly defeated piece of shit was in his trunk as the Knight did his grim work.

A hole was the wrong word for it. The Knight muttered to himself as he worked. "He should've known better," he whispered. "He should've known not to run. How could he have ever thought he was going to win?"

Crunch. Scoop. Drop. A neat pile of dirt formed next to the hole, one scoop after another.

"Fucking shotgun. If he'd just come quietly, he might not have had to... if fucking Galloway had stuck around..."

He whistled quietly to himself, lowly, just under his breath, just for him. This was his private moment, his, where his enemy was before him, ready to die. The Menace purred. It loved what was to come next.

He popped the trunk and removed Flannels' shirt.

He grabbed his bound quarry by the neck, cold brown eyes staring at the barely-conscious, dying creature's closed lids as he gently lifted him over to the hole, like a loving Embrace by the throat...

There was a whistle of steel against scabbard as his big knife was drawn. He turned him to face the hole, to tumble in -- then Peter Baldwin rammed the knife into his heart, grinning to himself as he withdrew his blade and let go. Gently, he wiped the blade on the dead man's shirt and tossed it in.

The First Estate. The code. Doing this so that the Covenant's interests were protected.

It was what made him what he was.

What kept him human.

...wasn't it?

Peter Baldwin's Humanity drops to 4.
