"Feel free to go first if you want." Orpheus offered. First move didn't really matter all that much.

It was all the moves after that mattered. Every move cut down a whole range of other possible moves, until the game was over. Time to start cutting.

Orobas took a seat with a smile, turning the board so the white pieces were on his side. He offers up a quick handshake to Orpheus before they start.

"To a good match," he says with a smile.

Once the handshake is accepted, the Mastigos sets to contemplating and making his first move.

      2 sux here then.

"Right back at ya." Orpheus shakes the offered hand and gets his game face on. Orobas was good at this, that was apparent. "Oh man, this will be fun." Orpheus laughs softly as he watched the pieces move. He certainly didn't intend to, but the laugh might have carried a sharp competitive tone.

I'm not sure how many rounds we're supposed to play for to be honest, so I'll toss another roll up.

Orobas nods as Orpheus takes an early lead.

It's said between masters no words need to be spoken. Orpheus might have a slight edge, but the journalist isn't going to give up because of that.

1 more sux for me then (3 total)

As the rules post here doesn't point out any specific number of rolls I'm going with the last AFD standard of five rounds. We can run longer or shorter if you want.

There's no greater feeling than watching the pieces fall into place. for the Obrimos, that seems to be all that's happening at he moment. The match was heading into the mid-game now and he had a definite control of the center of the board. Also, it might've been the fact that he's seen one too many chess games, but Orpheus felt like he knew exactly where to go from here.

He'd normally have started some kind of conversation by now, but things were going so well that he didn't want to roll out of that groove.

And groove he did. Right into Orobas's ploy. The journalist smiles as he moves his bishop, claiming at least a semi-vital piece.

"Overconfidence makes you sloppy, buddy," he playfully warns, taking the piece himself.

No need to mention that had taken a bit more concentration than he'd liked, but closing the gap for now was worth it.

Orpheus winced, "Ah, damn." That had been unexpected, but brilliant nonetheless. "Okay, clever, that was clever." He grinned, Orobas had the Herald concerned now, he'd been pressed from the center and caved, that was never supposed to happen. It was good to be set down every once in a while though; kept you honest.

Now, however, he was playing this completely by the ear. Instead of wasting a turn dealing with the breach in the front he pushed forward. Placing a knight in position to pressure the queen, but also leaving in a square threatened by the offending bishop. Pull the bishop back and lose the pressure, or lose the most valuable piece on the field.

    This was risky, really risky.

But then again, that was all a battle was.

Orobas winces at the move, his brain whirring to think of a way around.

Unfortunately, even pushing to the limits of his thought wasn't doing much good. With a heavy heart, he pulls the bishop back to save the queen.

"Round's not yours yet," he promises. "I still might surprise you."

He's still grinning the whole while. The match might not be as close as he hoped but the challenge Orpheus is providing is, pure and simple, fun.

"That's why I'm still worried." Orpheus chuckled. Just because you were down doesn't mean you were out. That was what made people truly scary. In the right situations of course.

Orpheus was pressing the King, if there was any time for something amazing, it would be now.

Sorry for the confusion, folks - per Xander, this challenge was meant to go first to ten successes. With that in mind, Orpheus has defeated Orobas, 11-7. Good game!
