The hunt for The Whistler

Their eyes slowly opened the blinding light from the sun took a moment for them to adjust too. The group were standing in a playground near the eastern side of the freehold. Why …why were they here? Each of the changelings felt for a long moment confused, lost and turned around, struggling to piece together why they were standing in the bark dust. The nearby swing set, empty was still slowly coming to a halt, and there was a tune…that murmured in their ear like a dream trying to be remembered.

    The Whistler.

He had come to town no more than two weeks ago, a stranger from beyond the hedge. Baring a silver pipe he made quick work in Sacramento, four children had gone missing since he had come. Rumor of him spread fast, and the local authorities were unable to track the kidnapper down, let alone were they aware he existed. However along those touched by Faerie, those who breathed the Wyrd, rumors of his deeds spread like sparks from a flame, whispers around every corner. His silver pipe could lure a child away, dazzle the minds, and create illusions. Little was known about the individual, some said he took the children to the Flesh market, others said he took them to the hedge. The Queen of Spring, Violet had made a decree that any who should hear of the Whistler or sport him was to report their findings to the freehold or do all that a was in their power to apprehend him.

It had been a hot summer day, each of them were out about town, each for their own reasons when they heard it. A distant tune of a pipe singing out into the summer air, it would of felt perfectly pleasant, a great addition to the day, but something about it made their skin crawl and they knew something was wrong. Hurrying closer to the tune the group found themselves meeting outside a small children’s play park, realizing suddenly that they had all been drawn by the same song, and heavy weight fell on them realizing the Whistler here.

what happened next they hardly could recall. Before them was a figure in the middle of the park that had a strange red cloak on, hid from mortal eyes by the wyrd, playing a silver pipe. The parents looked away from him, blind to his presence. They tried to stop him but that’s last they could recall

Now they stood in the park their minds fuzzy, glancing around they could see that three children were missing and the Whistler was gone. The clock was set if they wanted to stop him, they had to find him and fast.

Starting right in the action, you all have been confused by the Whistlers song. All your mental actions (Skills or Attribute ) check are at -1, until you pass a Resolve+Comp -1 check. You all can activate a single Contract at the very start of the scene if you so wish. The characters need to track down the whistler and stop him before he gets away for good, and he already has a lead on them!

Blinking in the suddenly bright light her eyes dropped from the sky to gaze out at the desolate playground. It wasn't empty of bodies, but the absence of children leeched the potential for joy from the park. Now it seemed like a pit of dead wood with strange works of metal and plastic thrusting up like alien, multicolored growths. She reached up to rub at her face, her gloved fingers carelessly drifting over flesh as she tried to massage reason and clarity back into her skull. The question of why she was there popped into her mind but it was immediately chased away by lilting pipe music. That was right. The Whistler. The Kidnapper. A bastard who needed to be stopped, a bastard who could buy her a taste of glory and admiration. The thought of the Whistler stealing children, just so he could hand them into the clutches of the Fae, was sickening. It writhed in her mind like a bloated worm, so she instinctively focused on what this tragedy could gain her. Selfishness was always handy for killing unwanted moments of anguish caused by sympathy.

Hands dropping to her sides, she looked toward the other people sharing the playground with her. She knew them, they were all Lost like her. She took a half step forward but her foot hit something, sliding it through the bark dust. Looking down she saw she'd dropped her cane. Her special cane. Gloved fingers drifted down to grasp the wood and lift it from the ground. She took care to make sure the blade was still locked in the cane's shaft before she started brushing bits of wood and grime off of her favorite accessory. Small fibers and pieces of dirt clung to her gloves and she absently wiped them on her riding pants. She'd walked out the door that day dressed in fashion's version of a riding outfit. Tight tan pants, tall black boots, a navy blue coat and a white, collared blouse under it. And she'd just rubbed grime off onto her carefully selected ensemble.

"We need to apprehend that viv-vi...that villainous vil...we need to catch that fucker," she muttered, frowning.

She had been somewhere, doing something. Something beautifully unimportant, something just for her, a mid-week moment of relaxation and time alone. Coffee, a book, air conditioning, maybe? Absolutely air conditioning; the heat made her head feel like it was full of cotton. It didn't help that she was wearing black jeans and boots, perhaps not the wisest choice of attire for stomping around in a park. But her light grey tank top fluttered in the slight breeze, so that was nice. The park, though; there was no air conditioning in the park.

Why can't I get coffee without people stealing things? Purses, children- But that wasn't right, was it? It wasn't 'people' stealing things, it was that asshole in the red cloak, who had to be sweltering. And stealing children. That was the important bit. Focus, fish.

Reacquainting herself with her surroundings, she eyed the familiar faces nearby; she was decently sure she had not invited half the Spring Court to her quiet moment of indulgence. Rubbing the heel of her hand across her forehead, clarity began to return. She had, in fact, been out looking for an ice cream shop people wouldn't shut up about, not a coffee shop. But despite the heat and the hunger, it had been impossible to ignore the flute solo on the wind.

She had just wanted to come take a look, maybe get a better idea of who or what the Whistler was - she certainly hadn't planned on going after it alone, thank you very much. The arrival of other Lost had changed the game a bit, but apparently not enough. Ava was still unclear on the details of how he had gotten away, but at least the flute-induced fog seemed to be lifting a little.

At Coco's declaration she shot the Dancer a sidelong look that might have been amused under other circumstances, and nodded. "Yes, we do; and we can't do that just standing here. Is everyone alright?"

Bubba was walking. Somewhere. To get something to eat maybe? He couldn't quite remember. He looked around and the first face he saw was Ava's. Am I on a date again? Wait then why are they with us too? Double date maybe... He recognized them from the last Spring get-together.

His ears were ringing. No not ringing, that was a song of sorts. A beautiful, creepy song. It had to be the Whistler. Bubba remembers being told about it before, that he should be on the lookout for him. He stole people they say. Bubba wanted to get a better look, maybe impress certain people if he were able to find something out. Maybe impress more people if Bubba found him small enough to be carried to the Queen.

Appre... Yes we need to... Yeah yeah let's get him!

Bubba nods as he takes a few steps toward where he thinks he remembers the sound coming from.

"I-I think I'm alright." Huntress shook her head, trying to gather her thoughts.

What happened...? She tried to remember. LeBlanc's decree. Yes, after she heard the decree, she gave as much time as she could to observe playgrounds secretly... And just when she thought it's futile and moved away, she heard it. And then... What happened next?

The playground was empty. It was empty and the last trace she had was the music.

"Not standing here sounds good." She looks at the Nix. What was her name...? Jack...? No, jack was the Hare that told her name... Ah. "Miss Ava, you know the local surroundings the best. Where do you think we should start looking? The trods? The... Hedge?" A hint of uncertainty in her voice; she wasn't used to travel even using the paths, much less through the thorns and brambles. And the thorns were too close to Them...

The Fairest comes to the other Claviger. "Coco, focus, we have a duty." She looked into Coco's face, a bit worried.

A gloved hand drifted towards Ava's face but dropped back down to Coco's side before she actually made contact. The Claviger's gaze was intently fixed on the Scriveners mouth.

"You have something on your lips. Makes them very pretty."

Suddenly her own name jogged Coco's attention away from Ava and she swiveled to look at Huntress. "Ahawi! Hi! That should rhyme, you know," she said, cracking a lopsided grin. "They're spelled so they should rhyme. But they don't! That's so odd. And yes! That's right! We have a duty. A very serious duty. One that should be taken very seriously. I have trouble being serious sometimes, but that won't stop me now. So what direction do we go in? Anyone know how to track or shall we just bend an ear to the wind?" she asked, head cocking to the side as she tried to catch a hint of trailing pipe music that might tell them where to go.

As the group gather their wits they quickly move to figure out the first problem. Where did this bastard go.

Coco listens to the wind only to hear a faint sound north of them. That must be the Whistler.

any One can make a wits+Streetwise to figure out where he might be going. Anyo ne with Hedge gate sense can roll wits+Wyrd

Ava looked to Huntress and shook her head, lips pressed into a line. "I don't spend much time in this area, I'm not very familiar with what's nearby, unfortunately."

The hand drifting toward her face made her refocus on Coco and draw back slightly, eyes flicking quickly from the hand to Coco's face and back again. The very obvious focus of her gaze and the accompanying comment sent the Scrivener into a complete attitude of what: her awkwardly frozen body language, incredulous expression and quiet "Uh-huh," broadcast how nonplussed she was by the exchange. If a person were to itemize her body parts, sure, some of them might be decent to look at; her mouth was way down at the very bottom of that list. The strangeness and the suddenness blocked out any potential pleasure at the compliment, even from someone as cute as the Claviger.

... Is she high? Everyone had been a little hazy, but that was above and beyond. "Right, um, anyway. Any luck?" She tilted her head slightly, watching Coco listen warily.
