Luke takes the sample and begins the experiment. It is slow, dull, work at first as the glue slowly melts into a gooey, liquid, state. And then it is all too fast: there is a faint pop and a hiss. Greenish, gaseous tendrils leap from the glue as it bubbles for one brief moment, changing colour of the mysterious substance within sizzles into nothingness.
When they let the glue cool, they discover that it has lost its special properties. It resolves into a flaky solid that can barely hold itself together. If this stuff was used to bind the book alone, the text would have fallen to pieces years ago. From the experiment, Luke conclude that the mystery substance dissipates through sublimation upon contact with the air, or at room temperature; it still doesn't explain how the glue and substance became mixed in the first place, but it does identify the active ingredient that gives the glue its special quality.
The group all possess Science skill at at least 1 so I'm ruling that no roll is needed to use the equipment, nor to make the more basic observations. The experiment will provide other material from which to draw conclusions, but that will require a [Wits + Occult] or [Wits + Science -1 for obscurity] to pick up on.
