Dry grass crunched under David's foot as he moved towards the waterfront. His leather satchel sat, collapsed in on itself nearby and a pea-green bike leaned up against the walls of the Chapter House. A still night, the stars twinkled against the indigo blue-black sky and the moon's ever mutable face watched down with her usual impassivity.
Bending, David used his sharpened eyesight to pick up one small, rounded rock and then another. He tossed them up into the air to test their heft.
The Mortician was stealing time for himself to gather his thoughts of which there were many. The chill and slight wind in the air was a welcomed change of pace from the stillness of the perfectly regulated air in the Library. In addition, the sound of the water against the bank was something David took solace in; it was the only thing more immortal than himself. The Long Night continued on apace, and its ministrations in Sacramento swept David up wholly. The Mortician didn't expect to find valued stability so quickly, but he thanked Osiris for it.
David's Companion hissed in his ear and David frowned.
As a response to his Companion, the Shadow flicked the first stone onto the water. The spin on it was good and it skipped once, twice, before it fell into the water with a quiet thunk.

The response made the Companion guffaw, chiding David as a parent would a child who knows what their child said was a lie. David glanced up towards the windows of the Library and seeing only the flutter of the white sheer curtains.
The question the Companion asked next, David could not answer.
It laughed as David flicked another stone into the water, only gaining one skip out of it before it fell, unceremoniously, into the water.
