Outside cast in the looming darkness of Amber Hill, Harold Smith stood hidden by both a statue of an angel and the umbra around it. The old security guard allowed Reeve Arnold Culler to look around for several minutes wondering when he'd be greeted -- it was one of the very few pleasures he had left. After five or so minutes had passed, Harold stepped out from behind the stone angel.

"Reeve Culler, welcome to Amber Hill Asylum. The Warden is waiting, do you need assistance carrying anything inside?" His voice was deep and without emotion; it was obvious that the years of working under Lazarus had diminished his emotional and expressive capacity to nothing.

"No." says the big man. "Let's move this along."

    "Very well then, follow me."

Harold leads Culler in through the Asylum. As they plunge deeper inside its walls the ever-darkening atmosphere becomes plagued with ever-increasing mad screams and sobs from the prisoners within. The further they go toward Lazarus' office, the less cleanly the area appears -- almost as if the cleaning and repair crews were wary of approaching the basement floors.

Eventually they arrive at the all too infamous door of Dr. Ith Lazarus, and Harold opens the door for Culler. Ith is standing at one of his many bookshelves examining a small leather-bound tome without a title on the cover. Unlike many of his other visitors, Warden Lazarus immediately gives this particular guest his attention.

"Mister Reeve Arnold Culler, welcome to Amber Hill."

As Arnold follows the ghoul into the depths of Amber Hill his gaze remains stuck forward. If he is moved in any way by the screams around him, and the environment of the Asylum, then it doesn't show in him.

He greets Lazarus when he sees him.

"Mister Warden Ith Lazarus. Thank you for lending your help to my investigation"

"Any work in assistance to the First Estate or the Reeve is my pleasure entirely." Despite his sinister hiss of a voice, there was sincerity in the statement.

Placing the tome back in the shelf from which it came, the doctor approaches his old wooden desk and gestures toward one of the chairs across from it for Culler to take a seat. "I have sent notification to Madam Mieser Wells shortly before your arrival, she should be here any minute. Until then," Lazarus sits down, his old chair squeaking loudly from even his slight weight. "let us discuss what it is we will be investigating tonight."

Arnold takes the folded handkerchief from his pocket. He unfolds it and reveals the object he'd found in O-Yama's car.

    QuoteQuote:
The object consists of a metal disk about the width and twice the thickness of a thumb tack, and tapered, barbed glass needle protruding from one side of the disc. The entire thing is about 1 1/4' inch long. The glass needle appears hollow.
"This was found in O-Yama's abandoned car. Lady Naetesh looked at it using her gifts of Auspex and found that whomever created it had a great knowledge of science, as well as some sort of magic. From her vision she described a mystical altar, where they were performing sacrifices. She also described a highly technological facility."

"More importantly, she believes that she picked up a taint on the object that she immediately associated with the Lost Nights."

An item associated with the Lost Nights? Interesting.

Lazarus looks at the object in Reeve Culler's hand, but doesn't reach out to touch it. The doctor was smarter than to outright touch an item that could still hold toxic residue. The object, based only on its look, was obviously a type of syringe meant to be used as a weapon; an idiot could be expected to see that. The Warden was no idiot, and he intended to see more. Using his heightened sense of sight, he examined the object in the Reeve's hand.

"Allow me a moment to examine the object."

    Science!

Dr. Lazarus sees that the entire glass section of the item - including the barbed, needle-like part - is hollow. He also detects a few very tiny droplets of some liquid inside the item. The item is so flawlessly crafted, so completely uniform, that it is clearly the product of sophisticated technology... nobody produces work this precise using a basement glass-blowing set-up. Most likely the glass itself was also a very high-tech material compound, though even Auspex wasn't precise enough for molecular analysis.

Droplets of liquid, there's my sample.

"The amount of skill put into this suggests we are not dealing with half-wit hunters." Lazarus turns his attention away from the syringe and walks across his office to the door leading to his autopsy lab; nothing inside the office would be any use to them. Unlocking the door and hearing the heavy steel deadbolt shift inside the mechanism, the Warden pushed open the door and entered his lab.

"I will need to take a sample of any toxin residue inside the tube for examination. With any luck we should be able to determine at least some of the equipment necessary to produce the glass on the syringe."

Where is Madam Wells? I don't have time for insolent tardiness.
