(Treasure Hunt) At the Proteus Fountain #2

The moon is nothing but the smallest sliver in the sky.

The air is cold and still.

Stark shadows of the Internationalist geometry is picked out by the floodlights illuminating the courthouse.



There, just outside 720 on 9th Street, the group can see the large fountain spraying cool water into the air. The site is surrounded by dozens of trees creating a small literal oasis in the courtyard at the entrance of the Gordon Schaber County Courthouse. The fountain itself is about 30′ in diameter and seems to be robustly sculpted in wrought iron, bronze and cooper.



As the group approaches they can see a small gang of about eight or so teenage skateboarders gathered not far from the fountain.

Teo will recognise them as the same skaters from earlier. They are enjoying themselves as two of the gang take turns to perform daring rail-sliding stunts along the barrier and rails of the steps.

Walking by the side of those men toward a common goal felt good. Aïleen wondered how those people filled their lives, their nights when they were on their own. Teo probably tried to find and follow God's plan. It was a good path, she had to admit. Callum was probably going on supported by some Chinese philosophy. And David... she thought she knew, and understood. All different as they were, she was glad to be counted among them.

She didn't have time to make suggestions of her own, that her fellow Dragons already had it all planned, and with contingency plans to boot. The Mekhet female activated her own Sight too, and nodded affirmatively toward Brother Raluca.

"I can give it a try, indeed." she said, letting the flattery roll over her. Inwardly, she smiled, though. She didn't waste a moment, and with but a step behind a tree became all but invisible, and started toward the direction indicated by Callum.

The sudden presence of the troop of Kindred does attract the attention of the skaters. Perhaps they thought they had this space to themselves and instinctive suspicion and wariness has made them pay attention.

Looking at the troop of Kindred the more confident of the skaters grips his board and seems to study the Vampires. Perhaps he's just seeing what the adults are up to.

Meanwhile the sheer dazzle and glare from the nearby floodlights has momentarily outshone the ability of David, Aileen and Callum's ability to discriminate what they were looking for; though Teo is prepared for it now and isn't defeated by the glare.

Their vision will settle soon.

Meanwhile Callum can see the skaters pay more attention to the Kindred.

Two of them, a boy and girl dressed in typical skater attire, seem to be mounting up on their boards and looking towards the fountain.

As Aileen's supernaturally enhanced vision settles down from the lens-flare of the floodlights they can see around the coils of the iron and bronze the shimmer of the cold fountain water and, there, at the far edge of the fountain, closest to the courthouse, is perhaps the outline of something submerged and tubular...

She can move, unseen, about the fountain.

If Teo is having a sense of de ja vu, then he is probably right. The two skaters are now gliding over towards the group.

Clearly they are unaware of Aileen's amazing subterfuge and stealth...

Even though she felt the comfortably numbing embrace of the shadows, Aïleen still double-checked to make sure that she was indeed hidden from everyone's sight.

Satisfied with the lack of reaction at her walk toward the fountain, she then focused toward finding a scroll or something like that, and ended up spotting something suspicious near the courthouse. Could it be their goal ? She resumed her walk in its direction, intent on making sure before trying to fetch anything. Focused as she was, she didn't pay attention to the young skaters's doing. She doubted they could be any threat to someone such as Callum.
