Treasure Hunt ~ Clues and Solutions 1

Brother Teo, Deputy McCallum and Aileen McFarlane had worked hard to solve the riddle. But, importantly, they had worked together!

Pooling their thinking the possible solution to Martha's first clue to the location of the treasure emerged and seemed to point towards a statue. The statue of the Chrome Horse outside the Safeway on 19th Street...



A bright moon promised for later, but for the moment bitter fog lingered across the city.

The statue of the Chrome Horse - built from the recycled fenders of automobiles - stood spectral and proud.

Wreathed in fog.

As the team approach the Horse Teo hears nothing not the distant hum of traffic sound hollow in the fog.

There doesn't appear to be a sentinel, though he'd be wise to keep an ear alert.

Meanwhile, Callum sweeps the Horse for signs of tampering...his perception is powerful enough to see that Martha doesn't appear to have violated the structure of the horse. But something is amiss with the soil at the base of the Horse itself.

Even though they had agreed on a meeting time, Aïleen had unfortunately been unable to meet the deadline, and walked as hurriedly as she could toward the Chrome Horse, where she spotted from afar two familiar shapes. She didn't want to draw attention to them, nor to startle them, so she started walking with a more pronounced tap of the feet than usual for her, but still hardly above what could be expected. She put that time to good use, and not for the first time rehearsed the Herald's words.

"We once protected from the terrors of each street.
Alack! In such a state we were crudely shackled. Bound to the earth's asphalted ore.
Rejoice! For now our alchemical resurrection is complete,
and it is upon flashing, argentine, shod hooves that we now soar!

Woe to those who's minds think only of stone.
Kindred with truer and Elemental Questing vision will see the heart
and reach their thorn crowned throne"

As she reached her fellow dragons, she nodded in acknowledgement, and apologies, and noticed that indeed they had been at work already.

"Is this the location of the letter, you think ?" she asked, her voice barely above a whisper.

As Callum digs in the earth under the statue, Teo greets Aileen.

It doesn't take long before Callum finds, hidden at a shallow depth in the lose loamy soil, a long plastic tube...just as Martha described it would be.

It is held fastened by a seal of simple red packing tape. But that can easily be broken.

Inside the tube is, again as Martha promised, a large white card of foolscap size which is protected by a laminated sheet. Upon the card is neatly printed the following verse:-


Lo, you have found a humble Spirit of the Air!
Yet, behold and tremble, Child of Night,
As you harken to your second clue: of King Poseidon he is an heir
All Oceans bow before his might.

For I am a goodly Element I shall not hide,
That he is oracular! The First Born.
Ah! But now listen and know: Wisdom shall guide
Your quest to its root under iron and thorn.


Other than an expensive yellow Lamborghini slicing effortlessly through the freezing fog, Teo may well feel all seems quiet.
