Jordan and Beverly enter the Sterling Lobby and with some checking, manage to find a table in the resturant for the two of them, where they sit at opposite sides of a smile tabe.

The room is large and spacious, with wood panalled walls and a relaxed atmosphere. Candles are quickly lit at their table and menus are produced. Beverelysmiles as she looks through hers, her small frame sinking a little into the soft chairs.

"So, what do you think? There's a lot of very good choice here."

Jordan ran his eye over the menu.

"Oh, yes...they have beef stroganoff. Probably my favorite dish. Would you like wine tonight?"

"I could be tempted." Beverely studies the menu herself, tapping her lips thoughtfully. "I might try for the king prawns, and.. hm a dose of lamb chops for my main course."

She nods at him as he asks about the wine. "I'm quite partial to white, but do you prefer red?"

Jordan smiled, sensitive to her preferences.

"White is fine by me. Do you like it dry like a Chardonnay, or sweet like a Reisling?"

Beverey considers this, seeming to relax with a rueful smile. "You woudn't beleive.. well, you might actually, believe how good it is to have choosing some wine as the most taxing decision to be made. I've needed this, thank you Jordan.

Oh, and, I'd be very happy with Reisling."

She eyes Jordan, feeling pleased, he was goodand intelligent company, and the chance to relax with someone like him was just what she needed to help settle the stress of sorting out returning to the city and all that came with it.

"So, tell me a little about yourself? When did you graduate and find yourself in this job, so to speak?"

She subtly waves a waiter over as she asks tthat question.

Jordan smiled. Obviously Bev new the first rules of conversation, get someone to talk about themselves and you'll never lack for material.

"Well, what can I share with you? I took my Master's about two years ago. I had been working with my father in his private detective agency...six more months and I could have applied for my license here in California. He introduced me to a questioned documents specialist, who taught me some of the science of documents. My love of history took care of the rest. I've been at it for just short of a year."

    The waiter arrived.

"Ah. Good evening. For me, Caesar salad and the beef stroganoff. Oh...and a bottle of the Johannesburg Reisling. Beverely?"

Beverly smiles at the waiter. "King prawns and then lamb chops for me please." As he nods and leaves, she turns her attention back to Jordan.

"So, did you inherit your father's love of investigation, or are old books the sole place your heart lives?" She smiles, clasping her hands.

"But what do you mean by the science of documents? I think I'm starting to see why you enjoy your field so much, it'd certainly interest me with those things to explore."

In answer to her first question, Jordan chuckled with warmth. "All of the above, actually. I very much enjoy a good mystery, and I like investigation. So when it comes up, I don't generally shirk. But lately, it's been a matter of settling here, getting to know the Mysterium hierarchy in town, and earning a living."

He continued: "Dealing with ancient documents and rare books has a science aspect to it...a forensic one, actually. The materials a book is made of, how it was bound, the inks, type faces...there's a bit that's involved."

The very efficient server came back with the wine. The server opened it and poured a little into Jordan's glass. He sipped, nodded, and soon both guests had been served. He raised his glass.

"Here's to your charming self and the hope of a growing friendship. Tell me something about your own work, Beverely. Do you specialize in a certain kind of disorder or type of patient?"

Beverly smiles and raises her glass to meet Jordan's toast. "To friendship. And thank you Jordan, here's to your delightful company in turn." She sips from her own glass to complete the toast.

"Well, for my own work, I need to admit I only finished my degree two years ago, and I've only been working for one of those years, but I tend to focus on people in difficult relationships, which I know may not make me best suited for trying to Awaken others, but I'm hoping to broaden my skillset."

She temples her fingers thoughtfully. "One thing I have learnt is that quite a few Awakenings happen in stressful or tense sitauations, perhaps because the person in question is forced to face a certain, very hard truth. But then, there are lots of other people who go through that and don't Awaken.."

She grins ruefully. "It's crossed my mind more then a few times that Awakenings are complete random events, and that controlling them simply isn't possible, but I don't think I believe that, perhaps it's only certain people who have the awareness to manage it, and even then, most of those people won't.

So, perhaps it's about increasing awareness of the world around them.. having them question things." She stops, smiling at him. "Do you have any thoughts on this? All the time I've been thinking about it, I've not had the chance to dicuss it with another willworker."

Jordan set the wine down and picked up a breadstick from a basket near the table's edge. He nibbled a bit while he thought.

"Honestly Beverely, it is an intriguing thought. Back in Los Angeles, my Awakening was more like an extended dream. I went to sleep one night concerned about a paper on the Roman Empire, the next thing I knew I was at the Tower in Arcadia, thinking thoughts like they were unlocked from a room in my mind. Fortunately I was spotted and mentored.

He set down the breadstick. "But what you're really asking, I think, is whether some are more pre-inclined or pre-conditioned to Awaken. I think the question is not only psychological, but political as well. A Silver Ladder like you, or one of the Free Council, believes that all humans have magic as a kind of birthright. The Guardians would debate the issue to the last urg of energy. Have you done any preliminary research yet that suggests that Awakening is anything other than random? Bear in mind that I am a believer in Fate...and it may well be the fate of some to never know Awakening."
