Group Outing at Pipeworks

Shin didn't have any gear with him, so he lined up and waited his turn to pay for the rental gear. As the harness, belaying clips, and rope were piled on the desk along with some shoes and a bag of chalk, the foo dog desperately hoped that there would be some sort of demonstration of how to put all this on, let alone how to use it properly. It looked like it would be very easy to break or foul up.

He accepted the gear, taking care not to tangle the harness, and turned to see that the sudden heat wave was yet another of the Sovereigns joining them - this one the King of Summer who he'd seen at the coronation. The man's presence was such that he found himself bowing despite his intentions not to cause a scene, and he turned the motion into an attempt to untie his street shoes so that he could put on the climbing shoes. Then, realizing he was blocking the rentals desk, he straightened and edged over to an area of chairs clearly set aside for the purpose and began gearing up as best as he could.

Degnar nodded to John as he spoke to him, extending his hand to the man. "Degnar," he said as ways of introducing himself to the other Darkling. After shaking the Whisperwisp's hand, the Tunnelgrub turned to Leah Spencer and tipped his hat in her direction, giving Danny Tongs a single nod right after that. He hadn't brought any equipment with him, used to engaging in free climbing more than anything else. Also, he couldn't really afford any fancy equipment, or this outing really.

Crap. Still gotta figure that one out...

As more and more of those arrived, Terri headed in to get ready, removing her coat and tightening her shoes. She then began to fasten the harness, something that she loathed, feeling that it got in the way. However, she could also appreciate that the building had insurance, which meant a hell of a lot of health and safety to keep.

As the others got themselves ready, Terri slid over to Spartan with a grin. It was he who introduced her to this place, after all. "Hey, Castor, fancy meeting you here," she joked, giving the hoplite a wink.

"Good to meet you, Degnar - and glad to see you could make it, Caster."

Glancing over at the gear rentals desk, the Whisperwisp notices that Shin was struggling slightly with the harness, and realises this may well be the first time he has climbed. Keen to be helpful, and to have a polite reason to move further away from the predators he would have insisted were not making him feel uneasy, John heads over to the Earthbones.

"You need a hand, there? Harnesses can be tricky to adjust right the first few times."

The desk had given him one of the bigger sizes, but the harness would doubtless need tinkering with to fit Shin's slightly unusual shape.

It was a good thing that John noticed him when he did, because Shin had one arm through the leg loop and was silently wrestling with the buckle on the waist-belt. The tiny buckle was not cooperating with his thick fingers, and if he couldn't get it open, he wasn't sure how he was going to fasten it across his chest. And that was if it would even fit! This thing seemed to be damnably small...

He looked up as John asked him if he needed help, almost saying 'no' out of sheer stubbornness, and then noticed that most people had the two loopy bits around their legs.

"Ah. Yes. Thank you." He said with a weary sigh.

Well, this was off to a great start. He just hoped that he didn't embarrass himself further once they actually got to the wall. Or, worse, fall off and crush someone... He took his arm out of the loop and held out the tangled mess of harness to John. Hopefully, the Darkling's nimble fingers would be able to get the loopy bits unsnagged from the metal clippy bits - he'd tried, but he was pretty sure he'd only made it worse.

"You can call me Lou, " he replied to Mr. Lapsey with a smile. He turned and reverently nodded a greeting at Spartan , who had just arrived, and in a much more graceful manner (which was strange considering their respective kiths). Of course, this somewhat exacerbated the embarrassment of the Draconic, who decided to simply approach the rental desk to order his climbing gear.

It was easy enough to equip himself with the gear, despite his size. He couldn't wait to get up onto the wall.

Danny nodded pleasantly to the other new arrivals, as he hung his coat up, and started fastening on the harness. He too, found it restrictive - he was used to the freedom of scaling buildings, leaping without a rope. The risk of plummeting, of being able to rationally look down and know that if he missed, if he faltered, he would probably die...

...Yes, it was a good thing places like this had harnesses, or they would be scraping beginners up off the carpet. And that would be rather unpleasant for all concerned, really.

With his black eyes gleaming, he glanced briefly at Terri and Spartan, and then nodded to Degnar, pleasantly.

"I've never climbed indoors before, you know," the Smith said lightly to the Tunnelgrub. "This should be quite the experience."

"Indeed, fancy, yes." Spartan says with a raised eyebrow. The wink was also noticed, but brushed off as a friendly gesture. "This should be a good time, it has been a while since I have been climbing with a group." Spartan states as he checks over his gear. "John, hello."

Once the person ahead of her was finished with their transaction, Anya moved forward to - sadly, in the Draconic's mind - part with her cash in order to rent out the necessary gear. Once it was gathered up, she stepped aside back toward the group to check it over and slip it on after a quick determination of which was actually the right way to do so.

She was looking forward to the next couple of hours, even if she realised that climbing in this form was not her forte.

"Neither have I," Anya remarked, as Danny made his own admittance.

Leah made her way into the building, standing off to the side of the rest of the gathering. She offers a friendly smile to Degnar before pulling her climbing gear out of the bag and putting it on. With so many new faces and powerful Mantles, she was feeling a bit uncomfortable.
