Festival of Lights

The Sacramento Festival of Lights was in it’s sixth season. The nights were held with a beautiful ambiance encompassing as many cultures and holidays as it could. Despite it’s main features of trees, there were still many other wonders to take in. The light displays outside the museum, the rotating choirs of schools and other local groups in town. Music that was festive and sometimes easy to sing along. Some displays were inside the museum and pavilion, while others were outside in the grassy park surrounding the buildings.

The lights were bright as they circled around this section of midtown. The weather tonight was fair and the sky was clear. Yet despite the bright lights, the darkness of the upcoming winter was setting upon the city. It was easy to find darkened corners and still observe the splendor of the evening. The surrounding area was all aglow with the decorum and vendors. There were holiday treats and ethnic foods and traditional drinks, minus the alcohol that complimented the fun event. It was open to all while families and children were welcomed at this beautiful celebration of light.

L’aire had arrived with Perry diCarto . She was feeling a little more festive than previous years. Even though the holidays were always a dreary reminder of what was missing in past years. As the Dancer had traveled over the years, she always found the appeal in how each city celebrated the holidays.

“Wow, I don’t think they missed a holiday or any type of genre.” The Winter’s violet eyes peered toward the trees and buildings as they pulled up. The Fairest Dancer was wearing dark jeans and a black blouse beneath a light brown coat that evening. Something simple, but very form fitting as it was.

Bundled up against the cold, John Lapsley wanders through the displays, a faint smile on his face as the general happiness of the crowd washes around him. He liked holiday lights almost in spite of himself; pretty little pinpricks of hope that stood against the enveloping darkness. Not that many of those around him thought of it so morbidly. Even fewer would prefer the comforting blanket of total darkness the way the Whisperwisp did.

He rubbed his exposed fingertips together and blew on them in a vain attempt to warm them up. Despite the cold, he was wearing fingerless gloves, having failed to find full-cover ones that fitted his over-long digits. I really need to learn to knit or something, make them myself, or at least find someone else who can...

Seeing some fellow members of the freehold ahead, John raises a hand in greeting, but doesn't walk towards them yet. He didn't want to interrupt, if they were busy.

Danny was attracted to the Festival of Lights, for a variety of reasons. Most of all was the simple fact that he couldn't remember what holidays had been like before his Durance. He remembered bright lights only from the Crystal Caverns, the guttering headlamps of the miners as they tunneled, the dimmer glow that seemed to emanate from the walls themselves in Her chamber...

...yes, those he remembered, but there had been no festivals there. He couldn't remember if he'd ever sat with a family opening presents on Christmas morning, or if he'd been from a different tradition, or a different faith, or if he'd spent the days alone, watching the clock tick past.

Just a blur of faces, and vague, pieced together memories that he couldn't put his finger on.

His candlelight mantle shone with the lights on the trees, and he let himself imagine that there was a family waiting somewhere back home, who would greet him with warmth and affection, and this time of year would not be an endless string of bitter, frozen nights, where he worked alone in the light of the forge and hated everything that he had become.

If there was one consolation, it was that he felt no fear, even as he acknowledged his sorrow. Autumn was dying, soon to be over. Winter was coming. It was in the air. But the crowds around him didn't make him

He caught the mantles of other Lost, moving through the Festival, and leant on his cane thoughtfully for a moment. Then he decided that it was better not to spend his time wondering, and raised one long fingered hand in greeting.

Leah had stepped out for the evening, deciding it was time to mingle with the locals. She was also on the lookout for anyone like her, cause she was just tired of being alone. Having the day off left her plenty of time to enjoy the festive environment. She had taken the time to browse the various windows of stores she passed before arriving at the Festival.

She dressed up a little for the evening, picking a green top and a nice pair of jeans. Over the shirt she had on a fitted black leather coat. As she makes her way around the area, she pauses here and there to take in the sights, enjoying herself.

Erik had let the number 62 take him downtown, allowing himself to become lost in the city, he hadn't looked at the bus schedule or destination, but as he came close to the Handle District and the Capital he could see the streets were awash with holiday decorations and lights. He pulled the cord to indicate a stop and stood up from his seat. There were no strong emotions flowing on the bus, but it flitted from the streets, awe and wonder from tiny faces, warmth and love from others.

The air released with a whoosh and the bus lowered to the curb. Erik made his way to the doors and stepped down onto the sidewalk of 19th street, checked his small, flip notebook and his watch. There was mention of an Ice Skating Rink on 20th and he made his way there to people watch.

    Might even try skating too...

    Erik smiled with the thought

Before his fellow freehold members could reply to his wave of greeting, John's attention is grabbed by something more important: a new changeling, one he was sure he hadn't seen at any of the freehold functions. And he was certain he would have noticed her. Not just because she was pretty - although that was part of it if he was telling the truth - but because aspects of her mein looked hauntingly familiar, even from a distance.

Her ears, her fingers...god, even her complexion, though that's difficult to see properly in this light. Could it be that her durance was the same as mine?

Personal interest notwithstanding, he felt drawn to speak to her. After all, he was proving himself worthy of the Legate of Mists title; should he be successful, approaching such newcomers would be expected of him. He approaches her slowly, keeping Danny and the others in sight in case she turned out to be dangerous - after all, the Marquis loved to create spies - allowing her time to notice his approach. Once in her line of sight, he raises a nail-less hand in a friendly wave.

"Good evening. Are you new to Sacramento?" His tone was light and friendly, aware that she might be wary of him.

Perry peered around, enjoying the lights thus far. There were so many, and it was a time of year he enjoyed... even if contemplating his sorrows was not high on Perry's list of things he liked to do. And like it or lump it, of late, he had been contemplating his sorrows a whole bunch. Still, even amongst the sorrow, there was the beauty of Winter's approach. California was not a snowy land, which was fine by the attorney, but the festiveness of all the lights was welcome.

Like a moth to a flame, he was, especially when invited by a good friend.

Perry's leather gloved hand flashed out and pointed out one particular tree that was just spectacularly well done. "I know, right? Look at that! Isn't that fabulous?" He put his hand upon his hip and made a show of offering L'aire his arm in an overly amused way.

He felt the Autumn mantles of John Lapsley and Danny Tongs, saw their greetings -- and raised a hand in reply, flashing the Autumn Smith a beautiful smile. "Danny," he said pleasantly, "How are you this evening?" He turned his head to greet John, but noticed not one, but two others. One beautiful lady, and one skeletal-looking gentleman. And he'd seen neither before.

"Perhaps we ought to take a moment to greet those two," Perry muttered quietly to L'aire, his eyes flashing over to the two who he had never seen before.

If L’aire was every chilly, she rarely noticed it. Her Mantle producing a slight chill around her being as it was. But sometimes, she probably was cold, and the Chaplain usually noticed before she ever did. It may have still been the season of Autumn, but because retailers pushed the holidays, they were present all around. And maybe that Onyx part of her liked to remind her Spring friend that there was still beauty in Winter.

His reaction, even after the rise of Perry’s Mantle, was proof of that. “You know it’s too bad there wasn’t snow. It was certainly sparkle even more.” L’aire shook her head and took his arm in a cordial way. Perry may have been gay, but still a gentleman.

L’aire waved to John Lapsley just as his attention was pulled toward another Darkling. She was beautiful but there was something about her eyes.

The Wizened was beautifully spotted amid the lights on display. Strange as it may seem, Danny seemed to add to the ambiance of the evening. There was yet another Darkling who arrived shortly thereafter Danny.

Smiling to great him. “Hey Danny. Good to see you.” Her voice sincere with it's ring.

Agreeing with Perry as she saw another Darkling ( Jarons20 ). “Yeah, I don’t think I’ve seen the two before. But it looks like John is talking to the lady.” The Fairest didn’t want to overwhelm the newcomers, she knew was it was like to be new.

Danny gave a pleasant smile, his pallid, almost featureless face dancing with the candlelight. He felt at peace here, with the Contract's crystal clarity running through his veins and keeping him present. These were members of the Freehold - and newcomers. He was the Paladin of Shadows. It was his new duty to be the mailed fist of Autumn.

"Hello Sasha, Perry. It's a nice night, isn't it?" the Wizened replied, the smile looking strange on his lipless mouth. His hooked fangs were very visible. His black eyes moved over the newcomers, watching John Lapsley move towards the striking darkling. It was nice, in all honesty, to see more darklings in the Freehold. He had wondered why they seemed so uncommon. "Perhaps they're a little Lost?"

He couldn't help but make the soft joke.

Her eyes turn to him, taking in his wave of smoldering leaves and the rest of him, including the ears. She recognized some of her own features, and felt a rush of relief for her luck this far. Leah waves back to the Whisperwisp, smiling to him, “Is it that obvious?” she asks, matching his tone. “I moved here a few weeks ago and have just gotten around to getting out. I’m Leah by the way.” Clearly noticing his eyes and how they were set apart.
