After handing over the book Dr. Swift tries to pay close attention to what the Bishop is doing. He wants to help out, but finds that once again the beast's restlessness is interfering. He puts a hand to his head and closes his eyes briefly, as a mortal fighting a sudden headache might. After a moment's concentration the Beast quiets down again and he turns back to the conversation.

"A message? How interesting, and a bit ominous. We knew the book might be important. Is there more similarly encrypted messages easily seen now that we know how? I still think a full analysis would be the best course of action unless something more pressing arises."

Several people have asked me if it is an error that the quote is "This To Bares Pain" and if it should instead be "This Too Bares Pain". I will tell you that it is spelled "This To Bares Pain" for a reason. Can't tell you much more without ruining it for you.

Side Note: if anyone has a dicepool they think would be useful to figuring this out, throw it out there. I can't promise it will be useful, but hey. Go with what you got.

"This... to bares... pain," the Haunt repeated, and this time at least the pauses were a purposeful hesitation as she tried to figure out what it might mean. Riddles were not exactly here thing, but that was hardly reason to not try and figure out.

More likely, the solution would not come to her in the blink of an eye. It would take more investigating, more searching and a united effort to get to the bottom of what was going on: coded message and all.

Without realizing it Martha's thoughts initially matched Dr Powell's almost exactly. She too pondered the grammar...and then the acrostic cryptographic format...then began to go over this in her mind...looking for patterns...trying to unravel the mystery of it all. Hoping she could work with others to piece it all together.

Her friends had been murdered. Perhaps even because of this very book. This was one of the few clues to bringing their killer to justice...

"In my experience, Doctor Swift, all messages are ominous. Always. I suppose no one feels the need to write their laundry list in code these days," the Haunt said, his glacial tones calm and almost eerie tranquility. In the same way that the frozen side of a mountain, seconds before an avalanche, could be the most beautiful thing.

"If the linguistical choice is intentional, then the 'to' is a preposition rather than an adverb...." Dr. Swift mutteres to himself, attempting to divine meaning from what has been discovered. Speaking a bit louder he says, "Could 'bares pain' be a place, or a person? Is the journal supposed to lead one to pain then?"

Ariana was in agreement with the Sanctified Haunt. It was taxing to see more encryption from some anonymous menace to their Society. Whomever it was seemed to want to test the stronghold of the Domain. She wondered if the one who was behind it knew that all these games and riddles only made them all want to find them even more.

“Perhaps this one is a coward who needs to hide behind the passages of words.” The Lordess looked around and shook her head. “However, nothing is coming to mind regarding this phrase.”

Chess seemed much simpler at times.

*Max studies the book with the others, shaking his head absent mindedly at Sidor's joke about coded laundry lists. With his attention focused on the book, he had once more missed the Bishop's dry sense of humor.* Not necessarily, Deputy Grigoriev. Thomas Jefferson and Benjamin Franklin would often contain ciphers in their correspondences with friends as fun little puzzles and as a way to keep their minds sharp. What concerns me most is the repetition of the phrase.

As you say, it appears on every page. In different ways each time, but the message is the same. I begin to wonder if we're dealing not with a message but an obsession. The product of an unhealthy mind, or one that has somehow been controlled or manipulated...

*Max grows quiet, studying the pages intently and wracking his brain for anything in his memory that might match the strange writings...*

The Good Doctor Powell and Herald Villiers notice a trend that the further toward the back of the book they go, the more the capitization changes in the letters. By the end of the book the T and the S are the only things capatalized.

Sidor takes the book and begins to lay out the pages, as he does he notices that at the beginning, where all the letters are capital. They are denoted more cleanly. By the end of the book they are not as clearly defined. Like the person struggled to leave this code.

The Good Doctor of Archeology reviews the papers and looks at it from a diffenent point of view. The age of the document. Perhaps if he used his Doctorate he could reveal some secrets.

Linguisticly speaking Max *knows* that the To being To is important. Even though it does not make sense in the phrase. Mister Heinz being a cunning linguist begins to roll through the phrase in different languages and still does not find an answer. There has to be more too it. Perhaps types of word play?
