In which the Herald, a Deputy and Jim go on Patrol

Dillon watched the Major leave as well, praying that he had sense enough not to let his guard down. He doesn't think there's much danger of that, but still. Mortals that Dillon actually likes are coming fewer and farther between, these last few decades. As much as he'd kept up with them, he is still just a bit old-fashioned.

While he is also the Deputy Reeve on-site, it is Martha that had developed their plan of action, and she is the maximum authority so long as His Majesty isn't present. In the field, however, her security is Dillon's primary concern. So after a look around, at the surrounding streets and park gates, parked cars and shadowed alleyways, he leans down, close to the little Herald to murmur. "Ma'am, I must request that we abort this patrol tonight in light of the potential for open hostility, and to consider information gained."

It only occurs to him after the fact that she could probably hear his quietest whisper from several yards away. Oh well. Force of habit.

Martha was reluctant to abort fully. But, they had being tested tonight...it had proven useful and she had seen them all act as a team and work well together. Pleased and impressed, she gave the patrol team a happy and sincere smile.

"Yes...yes indeed, gentlemen...I fully agree. We have had a successful patrol and an even more successful encounter with the Major. To advance further invites more trouble than it would solve. We have learned much tonight and there is much to ponder. Let us return along our path taken to this point and retrace our steps to return to our vehicles!" she smiles cheerily, Martha adjusts her straw boater and briefly and almost playfully gestures her cane as if it were a sword and she was leading troops into battle.

She too remains alert for danger.

"Yes, ma'am..." James said quietly as he nodded once, smiling at the group for a moment before his eyes snapped about, peering for any danger. He prayed the Major would be well - such a spectacularly well-timed meeting could only be providence, fate, a Divine plan - indeed, maybe there was someone watching out for them. Without the Colonel and his ferocious reputation as a warrior, perhaps their Masquerade would have been breached. Perhaps there would have been violence and blood spilled as cheap pistols faced off against Protean claws.

Their blood, not ours.

James was no Sanctified. But he couldn't help but think that maybe, just maybe, someone upstairs was looking out for them. A sheep in wolf's clothing -- that was the Colonel. And yet the other sheep were terrified enough to back down from their combined forces, cowed by word and deed and fear.

At least, for now. He couldn't claim to see the future. That was for the Almighty. Or whatever he was called.
