Betony Rue took the offered foam cup but almost instantly put it down on a chest of drawers when she saw the Kincaid child was awake.
She hadn't expected him to return from sleep this quickly and it trouble her that he had. She went back over to the bedside.
"Kincaid boy," she addressed him, at least his eyes seemed focused now "I am Betony Rue Jasons." She watched to see if he would look at her.

Betony Rue didn't sigh, it was to be expected after all and it was more indication of awareness than he had shown before.
"Samuel Kincaid," she disliked the taste the kincaid boy's first name left in her mouth but she ignored it "I am Betony Rue Jasons. You don't need to be afraid. I am not going to harm you. You are safe."
Betony Rue's voice doesn't exactly do well when trying to convey reasssurance and comfort.

Since it had seemed to have some effect on the boy previously, Derek decided to sing again. The Beatles had worked fine so far, and thinking a playful song might do the trick, Derek went with another Ringo Starr piece, this time one of the few Beatles tunes Ringo wrote. He sang it a Ringo-like tenor, and even attempted to mimic Starr's distinctive, and rather goofy, accent.

"That's right," Derek says, smiling. He thinks about holding the boy's hand or stroking his hair, but decides against it, unsure how he might react to touch. "You're safe here. Nobody bad can find you."
