The Beast's eyes flick to the river.

1suxx; Otto's nightmares kick in, -1 to all rolls

The color drains from Otto's face and his whiskers droop. "Oh god, they could waiting for me there too." he thinks, turning back to the guards. "Oh god."

Rook's sunglassed eyes flickered to Otto, and he frowned. He might not be able to read people who were concealing themselves, but someone losing their cool that badly was still a flashing neon light, even to a seige weapon.

"If you can't keep yourself calm, Otto, go back," the Constable said. His voice was firm and level. "You're a risk to yourself and other people."

And a panicking ally was dangerous, if a single word could slip them up. If causing offense was that much of a risk, then the odds of the stallholders responding well to someone screaming, crying, and fleeing with abandon... yes, that wasn't going to happen. Rook knew precisely how physically dangerous he was, even against multiple opponents, but the trade-off meant that he'd be on the Board.

A panicking, crying individual was as likely to be categorised as an enemy.

Chess pieces had no concept of 'neutral' or 'civillian'. There was only an ally or an enemy. Someone who was acting against his allies' interests... by design or accident...

That meant that the Constable couldn't be sure that he'd be able to defend a retreat effectively. Not without capturing the problem in the process.

The Iron Adjutant crosses her arms after noticing Otto start to spiral somewhat out of control. Unfortunately, Xerxia hadn't done much magical study, so she is unable to help the otter as his fears consume him.

"Sorry, bud, but I'm with the castle on this one..." she says apologetically, turning slightly. "Get the act together, or look for more leads on the other side. If you can't find anything, start looking into Fairweather." Something I'd like to get back to sometime... the elf thinks, unconsciously holding her leaf-patterned purse closer.

Almost on cue, as if summoned by the otter's very own nightmares, a large fish-like creature jumps out of the murky waters for a moment before dropping back in; making a huge splash that manages to get everyone around wet. Now that they have been splashed by it, the group gets a good whiff of the raunchy smell that is coming from it.

Beej, please roll Resolve + Composure -3 for Otto

Barely holding his own phobia in check, the good doctor is less charitable than usual when he is faced with Otto's paranoia.

"It's just a goddamn fish. Pull yourself together."

Instantly regretting his harsh words, the wizened hangs back and puts an encouraging arm around the beast's shoulders.

"I'm sorry, Otto. If you want to go back, that's okay. But if you're going to come with us, we need to know that you can handle this. We're a unit. We need to be able to rely on each other."

Jack hopes his words help Otto one way or the other, but the old soldier doesn't slacken his pace as he walks purposefully toward the entrance of the Fleshmarket. Perhaps he's afraid that if he slows down long enough to think about what he's doing, he won't have the nerve to keep going.

Otto seems to want to make a run for it, but is unable to do so with Jack having his arm around him. However, the otter is trembling and just keeps muttering to himself under his breath; "Oh god, just fish?! Oh god...why did I come here of all places?" The Beast seems to be absolutely terrified, but does not fight Jack's grasp and lets himself be lead closer to the market's entrance.

As the pair get closer, they notice that the shadowy feral figures are actually wolves. However, they are not common wolves as it is expected. Nothing in the Hedge is ever normal, and these creatures are no exception. Upon closer inspection they seem to be made out of pure darkness, and they let out a low growl as they notice the group for the first time. The Blunderbores just tug a bit on the chains holding the shadow wolves, just to make sure that they were not too loose.

Stripes stays in step behind the others, keeping his head down.

"Aww, messed up didn't I?" He wondered to himself, not even cringing as they passed the dogs since he was lost in his thoughts.

He had honestly only wanted to help relieve Otto's fears. The water was murky, it wasn't his fault he hadn't seen the fish. So he kept telling himself. It didn't change the fact that Otto was quite clearly worse off than before.

"Maybe should just keep mouth shut next time..." Stripes thought as he looked around the market. "Everyone else keep saying to watch tongue and not make pledges here anyway."

Stripes took a deep breath and steeled himself. Alright then, keep quiet unless it was really important. That didn't sound too hard. He looks around the market, taking in all he can of it. Partially to know what to watch out for, partially to attempt to be somewhat useful.

1 Sux on a perception check.

Rook's lips pressed into a thin line as Xerxia objectified him. The castle, am I? I have a name. Maybe Otto's stupidity is contagious, and people just can't be bothered to use it anymore.

He threw off his irritation at the insult, and moved up quickly behind Jack.

"He's gone. Let's get him out of here before he hurts himself, or decides to scream at the wrong moment," the Constable said curtly. "He's no good to anyone in this state."

The group gets some funny looks from the pair of massive Blunderbores by the entrance, but not a word is said to them. As the group begins walking into the market, a large number of stalls can be seen crammed up along the sides of the bridge. Its hard to tell what each one is selling from their vantage point, but the nearest stalls seem to have a variety of animal hides, meats, fluids, and other rather unsavory-looking body parts.

Otto is still trembling but he seems to be able to keep himself together as they get farther away from the water. "Oh god, that was a huge fish!" The otter mutters to himself as he looks around the place, a look of disgust on his face. "We are a unit! Keep it together man," he continues to mutter to himself as he lets Jack lead him further into the market.
