Toren managed to free his hand, opening another gaping hole in the trunk. The spider crawls along the back of his arm, it's eyes staring up at his face. It's about 3 times the size of a normal spider, though it seems to be calm, in spite of the circumstances.

Oh good, a calm spider, that's good, stay calm. Toren does his best to keep calm as well, though is well aware that a spider 3 times its normal size most likely has 3 times the venom. Since owls could talk in this place perhaps the same could be said of spiders.
"Umm, very sorry to put a whole in your house, Mr. Spider. I'm usually not in the practice of wrecking homes." Or maybe it was just a big spider...
The spider simply stared at Toren. It didnt' seem to react to his words at all. In the meantime, a font of shadows burst forward from a branch and the squirrel from earlier took off through the treetops.

Toren blinked, hoping for a response. Maybe spiders couldn't do human language, or again maybe it was just a big spider. He was vaguely aware of the reappearing squirrel above him but its appearance only further confused the mage. He moved his arm back to the hole in the tree and tried to encourage the thing to depart from his appendage. "Go on, back in your tree. It was very nice to meet you."
The spider scuttled back towards the trunk, and vanished in a shadowy plume.

Toren scratches his scalp with his newly freed arm, trying to solve this puzzle he's faced with. So there's a large tree with a shadow entity within it. Yet the creatures here seem to treat it as a natural part of their ecosystem, causing no immediate harm. Squirrels, spiders, what else was in this tree, he wondered. In any case the shadows were the key, but once inside would he be able to get out? The squirrel seemed to be fine...maybe. Since he wasn't a life mage he couldn't manipulate the tree otherwise...except for ripping holes in it.
While he thought he decided to walk around the rim of the tree to see if there was anything different that might give him a further hint. Otherwise he was pretty sure what he had to do.

Toren could see wildlife all around him getting caught up in shadows, pulled into the tree, and appearing on another tree in a burst of shadows. Of all the trees around him, this one in the center had the most traffic moving in and out of it.

Toren came back to the place he left Dark Eyes. He bent low over her and lifted her shoulders so she sat upright and then pulled her arm across his own shoulders in a sloppy fireman's carry.Then he walked over to the tree and tapped it with his foot as if knocking on a door. He wasn't sure if he could command enough shadows to cover them both so he hoped perhaps the shadow entity would oblige. They had been instructed to enter the doorway in the tree and take it to the other side to see what Jon had to hide. "Nothing ventured nothing gained," he reassured himself.Lifting, 2suxx
