The local 4 year state college (tier 2 of a 3 tier statewide collegiate system), is home to mostly students from sacramento, Davis, and the foothills to the east. Boasting 28,000 students, and graduating 5,000 a year, it is a cheap alternative to other 4 year universities. Located right next to the sacramento river (on the midtown side, on J street just over the bridge), it boasts many small fields and parks where biology students can collect their insects for study. Many campus clubs are very active, ranging from things as innocuous as "Hackers 4 power" to the Society for Creative Anachronism to the Indian Students association. Annually in February, there is a large convention at Sac state of high school theatre productions at the schools three theatres.
