We've had some confusion about Merit costs recently, mainly because of indistinct wording and a difference between MET rules and Standard (table top) rules.
We use the Standard (table top) rules.
If a Merit is multiple dots, such as Striking Looks 4, each dot must be purchased sequentially for the final cost.
So, Striking Looks 4 would cost 2+4+6+8 = 20 XP
Upgrading Striking Looks 2 to Striking Looks 4 would cost 6+8=14 XP
