West came in, quietly, because he was later than he had intended to be. Apparently returning a car took a lot longer than renting one. They had made a fuss over the dirt and soot he had left in the seat, and accused him of smoking in it, as well.
As tempting as it had been to just deal with it, West was a believer in causality and consequences. So he suffered through it, although he had been tempted to tell the sanctimonious little attendant the truth.
He closed the door. "Hello?"

West reached into his pocket and fished out a little velvet box. He pulled out a brass ring, upon which closer inspection would reveal the sigils for Thyrsus and the Adamantine Arrow etched.
He gave her a bow. "Welcome to the Ungula Draconis."
Holding it out to her, he spoke hesitantly. "It's brass... you can consecrate it as a Tool... if you want to, that is."

West nodded, and his brow knit in unease as he thought about it. "Yes... I was told."
A hand reaches out involuntarily before he pulls it back to close the box and return it to his pocket. "Are... are you... okay?"
She seemed OK. Unfazed, even. A strong spirit.

Ankh begins to nod to show that she is fine, but her lower lip starts to tremble. Then, her eyes betray her by filling with tears. It doesn't take long once the initial flow starts and soon she is on the couch again, sobs wracking her small frame. Her whole body begins to shake and she cannot control it.
Through the sobs, she tries to speak. "I'm sorry......It's.........It's just been..........a long night."

Seeing her break down hurt, and West struggled with what to do. He knew it couldn't have been easy, and he felt some chagrin for having asked how she was, rather than just congratulating her.
Words and Soul Must Agree
The words came to him unbidden. West lived by the Adamant Way, but it didn't always dictate his actions. Sometimes, though, the Phalanxes provided strength and guidance when he unsure of what to do.
Reaching out, this time he didn't pull back, and drew her close for a hug. "I know," he said softly. "Don't be sorry. I''m sorry."
He was. This was the second time since joining them that he'd seen her in tears.

She cried until her eyes ran dry and there was nothing left but dry sobs and hiccups.
Finally, she pulls back and wipes her face on her sleeve.
"I thought I was dead." She said, sniffling. "I really thought he was going to kill me. And you know what? That didn't bother me. It didn't phase me one bit."
She shakes her head, taking a deep breath.
"The part that bothered me was the thought of betraying you and Kai. I just couldn't do it. I mean, I thought about his offer and it was ludicrous to me. The idea of betraying you just wasn't an option."
She shrugs. "So, I made peace with myself and prepared to die. Then, he healed me and let me up. I think I could have killed him at that point."

West listened and nodded. He wanted to add that he had thoughts of killing him too, but didn't.
"I'm glad, that's how you felt, that is..." He knew that Ankh had a much better education than he did, so he didn't bother with the psycho-babble that he'd been given. Hearing it hadn't mattered, either.
"I... didn't particularly agree with what happened, but...," West wasn't sure what to say. He actually wasn't even sure of what he was trying to say.
"Well, I'm happy you're still here," he finished lamely.

Ankh smiles at him, even though she could tell he was having a hard time trying to say something comforting.
"Thanks West. I can honestly say I am really glad I'm still here too. Although, I am not sure how I feel about what happened before all the interrogation stuff. But, I guess it was just a role for him, so I doubt it will be brought up."
She shrugs and looks at her hands. The one time she decides to go out and have fun. Yeah, Kai was right. Time to grow up. She really needed to act more responsible.
"I guess it was my own fault really. I mean, I went out by myself with the intent to party. I found a really good looking guy who danced very well. I was not careful, did not think to protect myself, and I ended up tied to a chair with a lunatic. Well, Kai pretending to be a lunatic, but you get the point."

West nodded, and smiled a bit. "Scrutinize everything. Run when you're ambushed or outnumbered. Remember the Banisher that Teleported as soon as we ambushed them? Fly away next time. If you want, I'll show you how Prepared...," West trailed off and grimaced at himself, for his retreat to the familiar.
"Sorry. There's plenty of time to dissect it in the morning. You're probably tired, too. I'll save the Yoda bit for later," he said with a grin.

"I went to Museum of Aquatic Nuances," West said with a slight shrug. "Interesting place, I guess... couldn't just sit around here waiting."
He didn't want to tell her that he'd had to find things to do to keep from stepping in and stopping the 'test'.
"If you're tired, why don't you go ahead and go to sleep? I'll also make sure Kai takes care of breakfast so you can sleep in," he said with a smile that didn't quite touch his eyes.

Ankh shrugs, thinking about her bed and the nightmares that awaited her when she rested her head on the pillow.
"Yes, I suppose I should. I am still a little wired though. All that adrenaline, you know? I think I might stay up for a bit longer and see if I can muddle through this book some more."
She holds up the book Kai gave her. "It's not in English and I am trying to figure it all out. It's keeping my brain occupied so my body can rest. I figure if I tangle my brain up in knots, then thinking about other stuff should be more difficult."
She lays the book next to her.
"But you should go to bed yourself. You look like you got dragged through the mud and then left for dead."

West started to tell her the appropriate spells, but as she continued, he understood. Just a short time ago he was trying to keep his mind occupied as well.
"Ok," he agreed with her reasoning. For a brief second he wondered why someone who could turn into a falcon and fly was sitting around reading a book to occupy herself, but he didn't ask.
He glanced down at himself and inwardly sighed. No, he didn't exactly look like he'd been touring museums. "Yeah... I think I will. Goodnight, Talon," he said with a warm smile before heading upstairs to his room.

Ankh watched him go up the stairs, and wanted to throw the book at him. God that man was frustrating and completely oblivious! What did she have to do? Throw herself at him?
No, that probably wouldn't work either.
She leaned back into the couch and opened the book. At least she could try to figure this out until she passed out. She probably wouldn't get any sleep otherwise.
