Jerry Brown, Attorney General of California, earlier today declared that "A little state control wouldn't hurt anybody."
Brown was commenting on the recent proposal at the federal level to revive the "fairness doctrine" a late 20th century rule that declared that media outlets must present equal coverage of all news stories. When it was repealed during the Reagan administration, conservative talk radio flourished.
Brown's comment was made on a san francisco conservative talk radio program, and as such is not his official policy. However, he has not yet backed off from his statement.
Reactions from many in the news business are mixed. Geraldine Staffo PR director of KCRA, welcomes the change "We feel that the new rules would not interfere with our coverage, and feel that it would show our audience how fair we truly are." Others, including a local talk radio host Kellie Taite, of 98 rock have a different view:
"You want to what? You want to tell me what I can and cannot say? What the F*** are you on? This is America! You can do this sort of S*** here! F*** no! We've got a F***ing first amendment here. You can't take that from us! You can't tell me to bring on some fru fru who doesn't know bikes for equal time! F*** no!"
The democrats have the votes to get the measure through the house and senate. Obama has yet to state his position. The ACLU has not yet commented, though they are looking in on "possible first amendment violations" with the currently proposed law.
