Ankh returned from her shopping and tossed all the bags on the kitchen table and headed for the fridge. She made herself a sandwitch and sat down to enjoy it. She hoped she would have enough time to put her things away before the boys got home. She did not want to hear another "daddy" lecture about her choice in clothing.
Ah well, I will either get used to it or blow a gasket. I just need to remember he is my teacher now and is deserving of my respect, No matter how infuriating he may be. I wonder if he treated Circe like this? She was younger then him too. Maybe I should ask. She thought, munching on her sandwitch.

West got back to the house, and noted Ankh's car. Coming in, he found her eating. Looking around, he asked "Kai still gone? Looks like you found some stuff you like..."
He put his meat pie down on the table and went looking for a drink. Sometimes, he really missed having a Matter-centric Moros around.

She finished off the sandwitch and got up, throwing her napkin away, she went to the sink to wash her hands. "Did you get everything done that you needed to?"
She was looking for polite conversation and at a complete loss as to what to talk to him about.
Yeah, this is awkward.

West sat down to eat, with a glass of water that he didn't look thrilled about. "Yeah, I just had to go talk to someone," he said, and avoided thinking about why he didn't mention to whom.
He pointed to the bags. "Listen, you didn't have to do that. It's just awkward for us to try to keep a low profile, and Kai doesn't walk around like a big-ass Jawa all the time. Some of our, ummm, chameleon spells don't work if we call attention to ourselves." He looked at her to see if she got that he was trying to apologize in a roundabout way.

Ankh nodded. "I see, well then I am glad I didn't do that." She began pulling out the clothes and folding them on the table, after taking the tags off.
"Let me know when it is an inconspicuous situation and I will dress apropriately, otherwise, I would much rather be comfortable."
She started with the jeans and T'shirts she had actually gotten. She decided some peace in the house would probably be best for all of them. Then came the bondage skirts, three. Black and purple, black and green, and black and red. Then the three corsets that went with them in their matching colors. Then the gorgeous dark blue velevet dress she'd seen and had to have. It laced all the way up the front and was tight to the hips and flared out about mid-thigh. It did not openly reveal anything but it was suggestive as hell. The last items were a pair of bondage pants and a tight long sleeved shirt to match.
She sat down and looked at West. "Why are you drinking water if you don't want to?"
Something occured to her and she perked up. "Oh, I met the weirdest girl at the mall today. Her magick was.....sloppy, and she was using it to get high. Then she actually wanted me to talk about who and what I was in the middle of the mall! Absolutely rediculous. I left soon after that."

West made an effort to swallow his water as he saw the clothing come out of the bag. Staring at the pile, he wondered if there was a file on him in Baltimore that had followed him, and discarded the thought. He had been very, very thorough.
He looked at Ankh, then finally spoke, "Do you have something to prove? Or are you just trying to provoke me? I don't understand you at all."

She stood abruptly and started gathering her clothes. "Look, I think we need to come to an understanding here. I am an adult, whether you view me as one or not, the law does. That holds weight. Maybe not in the world you live in, but in mine. So, did you give Crice tips on her wardrobe as well? I doubt you did."
She sighs. "They are clothes West, that's it, just clothes. Why is this such a big deal, please tell me."

He shook his head, "No. No, I didn't give her clothing advice. I didn't have to. She was a professional, and an adult. West pointed at the bag. "You act like I've treated you like a child. I haven't. I've tried to explain why that might not be, uh, optimal for our line of work. Jesus christ, you tell me to treat you like an adult when all you've done is act like a rebellious, spoiled brat. What the fuck have I done to deserve that?"
Why the fuck did Chris and Diana leave? At least Diana could have explained to me what the hell is going on.
He managed not to stare at the blue velvet.

Now, this," she held up the garmets in her arms, "is what I wear when I am going out to have a good time. Which I used to do a lot, however that time will most likely be lessoned a great deal soon. I would also like to point out that I conducted myself in a very professional manner at the meeting. Or were you too distratced elsewhere?"
She frowned and tried very hard not to scream and rant and rave. This man was beyond frustrating and frankly sucked with words. He obviously did not use them much.
"I am not Crice, or Kai, of Azriel. I am me. I plan on staying that way. Now, do you think you could explain to me exactly what it is you are having a problem with? Then, maybe I can help you. But calling me a "spoiled brat" is rude and flat out uncalled for. Unless you would like to reduce this conversation to name calling. I am sure I am immature enough to do that for you."

West considered her words. She was right. It was his problem, and not hers. He could point out that she had insinuated she was getting a more conservative wardrobe, but she would just point to the jeans and t-shirts. He could point out that what she had worn wasn't appropriate for meeting an Adamant Sage, but that wouldn't really accomplish anything but make her more defensive.
Finally he spoke. "Yeah, you know, you're right. I just need to do some adjusting," he said, walking into the living room, away from the pile of clothes.
"So tell me about your mystery mage." West tried to clear his head as he sat down on the couch.

Ankh stood there completely confused, He wasn't going to argue? He wasn't going to tell her she was just a stupid girl and she needed to get over herself?
She almost dropped the clothes. Catching herself, she put them back on the table and followed him into the living room.
"Umm, well she was just very weird. She seemed to be using her magick to get high and then when I said something to her about not discussing such things in public, she kind of freaked out on me. She demanded to know who I was, right then and there. I think she said her name was Gwenivelle. I don't know anything else about her really."
She sat down heavily and just stared at him. This was going to be an interesting tutaledge to say the least.
"Umm, I think it would be apropriate for me to apologize right now. Ok, maybe not apropriate, but I would feel a lot less guilty. I don't do well when people tell me who I should be. It's one of the reasons I left San Fransisco and my mentor. But, that's not really a good enough excuse. I'm sorry."

She couldn't not worry about it. She was female, they worried about everything. It was like breathing, it just was.
"Ah I think I can remember the name so, maybe we'll learn something. Have you heard anything about the meeting with Dex? Am I to attend that as well?"
Dammit man, talk to me! Quit shutting down! She thought, frustrated, but she knew if she pushed the issue it would just close him down further. So, she went back to business, the one thing he seemed comfortable with.
Finally she just blurted it out, the question that had been on her mind since she'd met him. "Why do I make you so uncomfortable?"

God, the girl was persistent. Where the FUCK was Kai? West rapidly evaluated a rather dismal situation. There was nowhere to go, and it seemed like she wasn't going to let it go, no matter what concessions he made. He sighed. Even Karma said he was running away from something.
Die Every Day? The thought brought the hint of a smile to his lips. He doubted they ever meant something like this.
"Uhhhhhh... I just, uh, find some of your clothing a bit too... provocative for my taste. That's all... and now we've got that cleared up," West said.

She wasn't sure how to react to this, it kind of hurt actually.
"Ok, well uh......" She groped around for something to say and her brain emptied. Traiter that it was. "I guess I'll have to work on that then. Um sorry."
She looked at him intently for a moment and then sighed in exasperation. "Why couldn't you have just said that in the first place? I mean, it's not like I would have gotten offended. It would have been a much better reason then the professional line of crap you tried to feed me. Honesty works wonders you know."
She shook her head and stood. She walked over to the kitchen table and grabbed a pair of the jeans and a T-shirt. "I'll go change out of this suit, if you can call it that. It's not even all that comfortable anyway."
She disappeared into her room.

She opened the door, dressed in her jeans and baby T. Her face was a bit pale and looked like it had been recently washed, but she gave him a smile.
"Yeah, I'm still here. It will probably take a lot more then that to scare me away, don't worry."
She opened the door wider and walked back into the room. There wasn't much of her in here really. There was the bed, king sized, she tossed a lot in her sleep. She'd learned early that more bed space kept one off the floor. A dresser sat in one corner, complete with a large mirror. A desk stood against the opposite wall with a rather nice computer on it, a comfortable looking desk chair in front of it. A large bookshelf and a night table were the only other furnishings in the room.
Most of the books on the shelves were about medicine and psychology. There were a few John Saul novels mixed in and a John Grisham or two, but that was about it.
She sat in the computer chair and loooked at him expectantly.
" Your fine, you know. I mean, it's fine, no big deal. You didn't weird me out or anything so, it's good. honest. So, tell me what I should expect from this meeting."

West came in, and sat down on the floor, and looked up at her. He wasn't really sure what to say, and inwardly laughed at himself caustically. Wonderful. She's learning already, wants to talk business. Great lesson.
"Listen, I didn't mean to hurt your feelings. I don't want to hurt your feelings." He remembered the first time they met, and when her aura had changed into browns and grays that didn't fit her at all. He was glad he didn't have Aura Perception up right now. He massaged his temples with his hands.
"You're not too female for me. You're perfect. I'm uncomfortable around you because I find you very attractive," He said slowly, despite the urge to hurry through it. "I know that's not what you signed on for, though... and I'll understand if you want to leave."
West was not having a good day, and for none of the reasons he anticipated when he woke up in the morning.

Ankh frowned and looked at West for a long time before she said anything. She stared off into space for a little while as well, using the silence to help her think.
"To be honest with you, I don't really know what I signed up for, so it's ok really. I wish I didn't make you so uncomfortable though. It makes you stiff and impersonal and like a hollow statue going through the motions. I would much rather you be relaxed and enjoy yourself."
She looked down at him on the floor and almost laughed. Had he subconsciously put hi9mself in a lower position then her? This did tell her he truely was sorry and it made her feel a hell of a lot better.
"You know, I'm sorry I pushed you into admitting that. I can see that it must have been very difficult." She stopped, realizing that she was about to go into a psycho-analitical speech and it was never good to analyze someon after they'd just opened up to you.
She wanted to slide off the chair and embrace him. To show that she really did respect him for telling the truth, but she was afraid he would get all stiff and edgy again. She decided she didn't care.
She moved off the chair and higged him tightly. Then, she pulled away and moved at least arms length from him to sit on the floor.
"Thanks, I appreciate the honesty. I'll try to be more sensitive."
She felt kind of foolish now, and hoped Kai would not walk in at this moment. It would be an extremely awkward secen indeed.

West was surprised and tensed up before awkwardly hugging her back. That was... nice. He couldn't help but think how extraordinary she would be in a few years. This one may one day be an Adamant Sage. He wondered if those thoughts were reflexive defenses. What the hell had he expected her to say? All things considered, this was one of the few favorable outcomes. He unconsciously shook his head when he realized he was doing it again.
"Sure," he said, completely unsure of what to say. "Maybe I'll, ah, try to relax and enjoy myself." He felt like a dog worrying a bone as he continued, "Are you sure that you're OK with, uh, this, I mean, me? This isn't going to make you uncomfortable?" He gestured between them. "I'm sorry, too. For everything."

She stood up and held her hand out to him, an offer to help him off the floor. "You look rediculous sitting on the floor, com on let's go back to the living room where there are more comfortable places to sit."
She wanted the awkward moment to be done and over with before she did something stupid. He seemed to be even more uncomfortable then before.
"Ok, why don't we do this. You tell me what I should and should not do at this meeting we're going to. Talking about business seems to relax you. So, we'll stick with that for now. I'm sure we'll get much more comfortable with eachother later and we can do the awkward moment thing again, ok?"

West nodded, and took her hand, standing up. "Ok. Sure," he switched mental gears as they went back to the living room, "Because there's already some, ah, 'history' here." He sat down, and filled her in on the last meeting with Armadia.
"So we're meeting with Dex... hopefully to get some information on Banishers other than the fact that they like to hang out outside the Kruegans Sanctum." He grinned at her. "Actually, for this meeting, you need to present yourself as a strong, confident Master of Life. I really don't feel like having Dex thinking of us as two loose cannons running aound with a teenager. We need to be able to work together with them with a degree of mutual respect."

West wondered if they were ever going to be able to talk to each other without misunderstandings.
"No, I didn't mean a strong Mage, I meant a strong person. Like the, uh, opinionated thing. You don't have to keep your mouth shut... that was just for the Magister. Hell... Kai and and I kept our mouths shut for him, unless he asked us something." West was getting frustrated. He didn't know if it was him, or her, but he didn't seem to be able to say anything that she didn't take as belittlement.
"The only reason I care about what Dex thinks, isn't because of you. It's because Azrael and Circe left. I just don't want to get our little group 'merged' with the Kruegans because we might appear insufficient to warrant a separate presence." He sighed. "It's just political bullshit." West paused for a few seconds, thinking, then continued, "You know what? Screw it. You just be who you are and we'll make things work out."
Maybe I'll figure out who I am, before this all over. I thought I knew... until Baltimore.
