Taquin

It wasn't really 'running' so much as it was making a 'strategic retreat'.

At least that's what he was telling himself as he sat beside Emerson in the rented Bentley, trying desperately to not look over his shoulder. The past ten months had been...had truly messed with his head, and for not the first time he wanted to throttle his brother for dragging him to Mexico City.

Kuahana was everything Miguel wanted in a Childe: Beautiful. Confident. Monstrous. Brilliant. Crone. Taquin...not so much. Too human. Too sweet. Too full of the Blush and Change and Coils. Even his clothing seemed to upset the man.

So calling Emerson last month and flying to Phoenix...it had been the only way he could rebel against Miguel without rebelling against his brother. The only person he had contacted had been Emerson for the simple fact that she wasn't a Dragon.

Because to be quite honest, the last place they'd look for him would be curled up someplace with an Invictus Commissioner.

So, here they were. Sacramento because he wouldn't put the San Francisco Academy in danger. Not with the overhaul they were having lately. People waking and sleeping and just...things happening. At least here he could watch from a distance and maybe go surfing. It was only an hour or so drive to the beach, after all.

Breezy clothes weren't usually good, because Sacramento might be warmer than Toronto, but it most definitely wasn't warmer than Mexico, and he found himself wrapped in a soft fleece jacket, shivering because he couldn't help use Tezcatl. Another thing Miguel had hated about him.

His need to be warm all the time.

But he was with Emerson, and that made things perfect.

Even if he was constantly looking over his shoulder.

---------------

This place was nice.

It was a penthouse suite with two rooms, much of their place at the Soho Metropolitan in Toronto. Where he'd been thinking of buying a house before the Academy had collapsed and he'd gone with his brother to Mexico.

Because that's where Kuahana had wanted to go.

"It's nice." Not as nice as what he would be buying in the next days, but nice enough to take care of them for a time, and as he opened his laptop and saw the strength of the wireless signal, he smiled a little.

At least some things never changed.

"Did I thank you for coming?" To my rescue. The last is left unsaid, of course, because she'd know what he meant. He was thankful she'd bothered to come at all.

After all, she had Justin. And her House.

"If I didn't....Thank you."

Because he didn't know what he could and couldn't trust in his own head anymore. Par for the course with a Ventrue Sire who cared little for your hang-up about having people in your head.

Even with a perfect memory, there were holes, and it was driving him crazy.

Which she'd know, because her memory was just as perfect.

She was tired. Oh so tired. All she wanted to do was sleep.

Did she yawn? Emerson wasn't sure. -Could- they yawn? Sure, Kindred could, if they wanted to, but it was fake. Fake yawning, to fit in with their fake little world, and be fakers.

Fake, fake, fake.

Emerson repeated the word in her mind one hundred times, until it lost its meaning, until it became a sound and nothing more.

Her thin lips moved, she was whispering the word. Fake, fake. Bad habit, bad.
Stop that.

Smiling sheepishly at Taquin, sitting so close to her, and yet still so distant, Emerson took his hand. Almost took it. Her hand stopped, inches above his. Fingers wiggling slightly, before
she retrieves her Blackberry (Storm, baby yeah).

Checks the signal.
Needs the signal. Her Blood needed it. Her sense of belonging was tied to it, tied to needing the electronic contact. Her Sire had needed the web of family. The connection of familial ties. She needed their electronic cousin.

So when she had gone ten months with only contact from Miguel after he left her in Toronto, and then one night gotten a phone call from Taquin? A phone call in which he sounded genuinely ... scared?

She did what she was asked by him. By Taquin. She dropped everything for him, and made her way to Phoenix to rendezvous with him.

She took him back, all because he asked her to.

And now she was tired and all she wanted to do was sleep. There were nights when she didn't wake up. Didn't force the blood, the vitae through her system. Didn't want to face the world, another night. Taquin knew it, understood it. Understood why. And she felt safe, with him looking over her - because while she sometimes slept for days and nights on end, Taquin could be an insomniac, and turn his nose up at the day sleep. Stay awake through the sun's hours.

And watch over her. It was still hard for her, still an adjustment, this life, this danse she thought she'd wanted.

But he was determined to help her. Help her adjust, help her cope.

And every once in a while, there were glimpses that she helped him, too. That maybe he needed her as much as she wasn't willing to admit she needed him.

So here they were - in Sacremento. They'd help each other heal. Help each other remember what they'd forgotten.
