West had rented a car after leaving the Museum. It was late, and the agent had been reluctant, but nothing a little push couldn't overcome. He drove in silence out of town, towards a storm on the horizon. Usually he listened to music when he drove, but he preferred the silence of this thoughts.
Getting out of the car in the middle of nowhere, he looked up at the roiling clouds, and intermittent flashes of light that illuminated them from within. The calm void of his mind was in flux, emotions at war with duty.
The ends do not justify the means.
West lifted his hands up to the sky and pulled the power down from his Watchtower, across the Abyss. The difficulty of imposing his Will upon the Fallen using an Inferior was barely noticable. Thunder boomed and lightning skittered across the dark masses, and then the lightning exploded out of the sky. The sound of thunder filled the air as as the bolts kept coming down, fusing the sand into black shards and sending clouds of dust into the air.
He called them down until he was spent. Smoke and dust filled the air, and the smell of ozone mixed with the odor of burnt silica. The hair on his arms and neck were standing straight up from the ionized air. Black pockmarks in the ground surrounded the area, and he shook his head slightly. His vision was was full of colored streaks, blinding after-images.
Let the Guardians come, here, now.
West got to his feet I don't remember falling to my knees and made his way back to the car, it's alarm still sounding incessantly. His ringing ears couldn't hear it, but the telltale flashing of lights looked so fragile and insignificant after what he had done to the sky.
One day I will be asked for too much.
