 Antionette meets her Au Pair
|

“Fun clothes? Dress down?” she looked around the disaster area she’d created in the flat. Every piece she’d ever created, purchased or been given lay thrown in neurotic heaps; strewn across the bed, chairs, tables, floor… every square inch of space available for viewing was littered with clothes. Baron Quinton needed to be more specific when advising her on the types of outfits she might need for different activities and social events.
No… she thought about it for a second as she held up a Givenchy she’d purchased in Paris a month ago – “she” needed to be more careful to have a full and concise understanding of what was expected. That is what a great business person would do. Not blame it on someone else. Especially their sire. Antoinette smiled to herself in the mirror that reflected the beautiful gown, but only a blur of her. She was learning.
The Givenchy was tossed aside. That can’t possibly be “fun”. Or “dressed down”. Could it? She considered calling Baron Quinton for clarification. But she was positively giddy he had been so “nice” to her last night she didn’t want to risk ruining the mood: an adorable lavender paint job on her Koenigsegg, and the driver and all. The driver! Crap, the driver and the car had been waiting downstairs for an hour and ten minutes now. Stressed, she started grabbing pieces and just putting them together.
Ten minutes later, Antoinette was wearing a long, black, fitted, button-up with long cuffs, an olive drab, pleated mini in a fabulous, vintage, military wool she’d found in a WWII shop. Black, drawstring leggings that went to her knees (oh, so cute) and little black combat boots (they just had more character than her Docs sometimes). She added a vintage cross and she felt well put together, but casual somehow. This should work for dressed down. Down to business. Down to learning some important things. She slipped her Macbook Pro into a black canvas messenger bag that went famously with the outfit, just in case this Au Pair person wanted her to take notes. Then she’d impress the hell out of Baron Quinton with just how on top of things she was.
Fun clothes… now, this was nebulous. Maddening! Eventually she settled for a very sassy black and red brocade bodice (very tight) with full gloves and a layered black skirt. And as an afterthought, she threw another Givenchy ensemble she loved in the garment bag as well. Very studious. You never knew what the evening might bring. So far it sounded like it might be dull, especially if she’d be getting a manners lesson on Invictus titles, but who knows. Maybe she could distract Baron Quinton from her studies. How long could it take her to memorize a freakin’ title, after all.
   
Before leaving the flat, she grabbed the police report her friend at the station had sent her. Normally that sweet guy just fixed her speeding tickets – someone her Dad had “purchased” for her, but two days ago he’d sent her this very strange report and asked her if she was interested in the info. Antoinette had meant to share it with Quinton yesterday, but in the chaos of everything that has happened, it had completely slipped her mind. She’d show him tonight. Along with a very large stack of paperwork that kept coming from her Dad’s financial team. They were starting to ask too many questions. Why was she removing money from that account or putting it in this stock? Stuff she had no idea about, but was trying to cover on so they wouldn’t freak out on her. She’d have to discuss this with Quinton as well.
She was an hour and a half late getting into the limo, which was perfectly hideous. If she was Royalty, this was no ride for a Princess. Later this evening, when her lessons were done, she’d ask permission to buy something appropriate. She couldn’t begin to imagine riding in something with a back seat (only Soccer Moms drove cars with back seats for Christ’s sake) but with a little creativity, she’d make something work.
And an au pair… at her age. It was so silly! She’d had many au pairs in her life. Good ones and bad ones, but without fail they had all taught her one important lesson: the art of manipulation. Antoinette could wrap an au pair around her finger so fast it would make their heads spin. She’d always considered it one of her “special skills”, but in reality, it was the way she got back at her mother for always leaving her with the help.
But not tonight. She promised herself she’d give this one a chance and try very hard to learn something. Baron Quinton probably had a point to all this nonsense.
In a blink, they were in front of the Asylum. Thinking quickly, she asked the driver to take the car around and use the back entrance. No need to cause a fuss with a ridiculous stretch limo pulling up in front of the club. Lame. She asked the driver politely to go inside and see if he could find someone there in charge to let them know that Miss Antoinette Coeur de Lion, childe of Baron Quinton Jones was here to meet her au pair and was waiting out back in her car.
And then she sat back and waited. Softly petting Zero as he licked her hand.

Lioni had been waiting for over an hour for her new "student" to arrive. She was late, very late. Lioni had already called Quinton and informed him on the progress of his childe. She was very disappointed. How could such a proper man like Mr. Jones sire such a whimsical childe? It was inconceivable.
Then, the driver came in to announce her arrival and Lioni about blew her cool.
"Tell her to get her ass in here now. I do not have time to waste on these rediculous games." Lioni snapped.
She turned to Cozette after the driver had left. "This is going to be a very tedious evening, my dear. Please make sure I am not disturbed until after I have finished her lesson."
Then, standing at the door to the Lesson Chamber, Lioni waited once again for this childe to appear.

Antoinette's driver informed her of the au pair's comment and that she had better move quick. Dumbfounded, she grabbed her messenger bag and flew in the door. She didn't realize there was a certain time she had to be here. Sure, the driver said he'd pick her up at a certain time, but...
She should have checked. Damn. She didn't want to start this off on the wrong foot. Not after Baron Quinton had been so nice...
Antoinette spotted the woman the driver had described and ran over to her. She made a deep curtsey and breathlessly whispered, "Mistress Au Pair? I'm Miss Antoinette..."

Lioni looked the girl over with a critical eye.
Of course, waif thin, perfect facial structure, excellent posture, and exquisite features. My my Quinton, you do know how to pick them perfect, don't you? But it is my job to make sure she is worth something, as usual.
"Call me Lady Dupree please, I abhore the term Mistress."
She walked around Antoinette as she spoke, gauging what she could do with the girl. Finally, she came back to stand before the childe and smiled.
"The first rule of being a Lady is to always be preapred. When you wake, you will immediately get in the bath, then you will get dressed and be ready before the limo comes for you. If you are not sure what it is you wish to wear, then I would suggest picking it out before you go to bed. It makes life easier on all of us."
She walked over to a small room and opened the door, motioning for Antoinette to proceed her into the room.
She waited for the girl to enter, before stepping inside and closing the door.
Inside the room is a simple, wooden straight-backed chair and a simple, wooden table. There is a bald lightbulb in the ceiling and a very plain, full-length mirror set in one wall. The walls have been painted a very drab grey and the tile of the floor is of the same color, giving the illusion of a concrete room.
"Now, what I am going to teach you is not just about being a proper Lady in the Invictus, it is also about being a smart and proper Lady in the Invictus."
She moves to the wall in front of the table and leans against it, motioning for Antoinette to sit.
"I see that you are a high-strung and emotional person. You will learn to curb that. Emotions are not a weakness, mind you, but there are those among us who have spent their entire Requiem learning how to properly read those emotions, whether you mean to display them or not. Thus, you must learn the art of subtlty. You do not show surprise, no matter what is said or done. You do not show frustration, no matter how much you would like to rip someones face off. You must always remain poised and calm in front of others. Including your sire. Wearing your emotions on your sleeve will keep you at the bottom rung of our ladder, my dear, I promise you."
A very pretty woman comes in the door and hands Lioni a pad of paper and a pen. She curtsies gracfully, then leaves. Lioni places the pen and paper in front of Antoinette on the table.
"Now, we are going to teach you patience and penmanship all at the same time. I want you to write the phrase, "I will be patient, calm, and poised for the remainder of my Requiem" a hundred times on this pad. I want the phrase written in cursive, and I want it to be perfect. You see, my dear, we of the Invictus do not use such frivolous things as computers and laptops. We appreciate a more personal touch when we receive a letter from a fellow member. We also appreciate perfection. Thus, your handwritting will be perfect before you are done with me. Any questions so far, dear?"
Lioni held a very pleasant smile on her face, but her eyes were blue steel, daring the young girl to challenge her.

Antoinette tries to catch her breath, except there is no breath to catch – old habits die hard – and enters the room indicated by Lady Dupree. Yuck. Grey yuck. And, who decorated this place? At least Quinton said this would only last an hour.
She sits down where Lady Dupree indicates; the only chair in the small room and listens to her words carefully. Everything makes sense, though she seems a bit intense. Maybe she could lighten up just a little – it's not like we're performing brain surgery here or anything. It's Cotillion in a grey cement room with lighting challenges. Come on! Her mind wanders for moment and she wonders if Kindred ever have problems with high blood pressure.
But then Lady Dupree gives her the first assignment. Antoinette wrinkles her forehead and nose. "Umm... I don't write things on paper really. I don't even know what cursive is or how to do it. I've been using a laptop for all my communications since I've been in pre-school. But, fortunately, I've brought my laptop with me," Antoinette brightens and indicates the messenger bag right next to her on the table, "and I'd be happy to take notes on that and type the phrase for you a thousand times. A hundred thousand times, if you like. I type very fast."
She smiles her brilliant smile and she tries to win Lady Dupree over. Damn. What was she doing. She had promised herself...

The smile remained on Lioni's face, but her eyes went cold.
Obviously, this one has a problem with her ears. She thought.
She stepped forward and took the bag Antoinette indicated. Taking the laptop out, she walked over to the door, opened it, and threw the laptop across the room, smashing it against the solid wall. She called out to Cozette in a sweet voice.
"Cozette dear, could you send Frank over to clean up that mess? Thank you so much love."
Shutting the door quietly, she turned her attention back to Antoinette.
"I suggest you open your ears and start listening childe, or this is going to be very difficult on you. Now, I said I want cursive and I want perfect. One hundred times "I will be patient, calm, and poised for the remainder of my Requiem". You may begin now."
All of this was done with a calm and relaxed manner. Lioni's voice never raised above a conversational level, and her tone remained sweet and patient.

Antoinette flinched just slightly when her laptop hit the wall outside.
Crazy fucking bitch!
The smile was gone and her eyes narrowed. There was a really good chance she hadn't backed up most of the info on that thing, which included many of the designs for the Winter 09 collection. She picked up the pen, but before she began, she said coldly, "Lady Dupree, could you please have your man retrieve the contents of my bag and return it to me. There was paperwork inside meant for Alder Baron Jones and I think he'd be none too pleased if it were lost here."
Then she bagan to write.

Lioni smiled again.
"Of course, dear. However, next time you should consider that kind of thing before you decide to ignore what I ask of you."
She opened the door again and called out, "Cozette, be a love and retreive the hard drive of that laptop? Apparently, Ms. Antoinette had some important information on it. See if you can transfer it to another laptop so she does not lose all of that sensitive information. Thank you, dear"
She closed the door and began to walk around Antoinette as the other woman started to write.
"Your information-back straight please, one must always keep perfect psoture at all times-will be returned to you before you are done here. Hold the pen properly dear, one should always hold a pen with grace. Now, I am sure Baron Quinton has explained to you the finer points of talking to others in our covenent?"

Lioni quirked an eyebrow. "Actually no, learning titles and such is a trivial thing and I am sure your sire will be teaching you that. What I want to know is do you realize why you do not adress others by their first names? Or why you never put the word MY before a title or proper name?"

This had suddenly become mind-numbingly boring. Seriously boring. She leaned her elbow onto the table, rested her head against her hand and sighed. Yes she knew. Antoinette stole a glance at her watch. How much longer could this drag on? For the love of God...
"You don't use "my" because it's rude. Everybody knows that. Unless you're trying to prove you've got a massive ego and the other person either sucks or you're challenging them. And as for using first names only, well, that's a little "personal", don't you think? Unless you're trying to advertise all over town that you're banging somebody. And what kind of tramp would do that?" Antoinette smirked and looked boldly into Lady Dupree's eyes.
She paused here to make her point. She hoped Lady Dupree would get it and move this along. She was bored. She was royalty. This was dragging on unnecessarily long and her time was very precious.

Lioni looked at her, unimpressed that she did indeed know these basic concepts.
"It is good to see you can retain information. Now sit up straight, please. A lady does not slouch. It is unbecoming of one of your station, don't you think? As for "everuone knows that", you had best get that out of your head right now, because everyone does not know that. Mainly those of other covenents. So, you need to always watch what you say and how you say it. If you continue to insult me with your lack of attention, then I will make sure your next lesson is much more difficult and tedious then this one. Is that understood, Ms. Antoinette? I have much better things to do with my time then waste it on teaching someone who is not worthy of the knowledge. So, either have some respect, or get out of my sight and I will report to your sire that you are not worthy of the Invictus."
She turned and walked to the door.
"Now, you will arrive at your next lesson in a prompt fashion. If you are late again, the punishment will be unbareable, I promise you." She opened the door and waited for the girl to gather her things.
"Cozette will have your new laptop, sensitive information intact, waiting for you at the door when you leave. I would suggest leaving it at home or in the car next time. It will not be needed here and I will not be so kind as to replace it again. Good evening, Ms. Antoinette."

Ohhh! This infuriating woman!
Antoinette could feel the predator inside her itching to come out. To bite and claw and sate her anger. But she held it back, with a very tight, short leash.
"Very well Lady Dupree." She pulled out her iphone and touched over to her calendar. "Please tell me the day and time my next lesson is scheduled for with you and I will make sure I clear it on my calendar."
With that, she gathered her things and headed for the door. But she decided to go for one little snarky comment. What could it hurt on the way out, right?
"By the way, please call me Miss Antoinette, if you would be so kind. I abhore the term Ms."
She turned abruptly, skirt swishing sassily and headed out the back door for the sanctity of her vehicle. Once inside she collapsed in a heap and considered asking her driver to just take her to Canada. They must have Kindred there. But she knew there would be more pipers to pay tonight. So she sat for a while, cooled off, got her head back together and quietly asked him to take her to Baron Quinton's.
