Wake up and Start Living Reply with quote
-Narrator-

As the afternoon passes quietly in the home of Arthur and Clarice, the sound of a car door closing comes in through the window and a few short moments later, the doorbell rings. Clarice offers to go and see who is at the door and a few minutes later returns with a young man in tow. He has dark brown hair and almost luminescent blue eyes.

He smiles and says, "Sorry, but I got here a little sooner than I expected. Mr. Cartright told me to tell you that your apartment is ready, and if you are too, I am to take you there."

Ruby follows from thread "New City"
---

Ah, for a world full of hidden mysteries and ancient sorceries, everyone seems to be in such a rush! Ruby bemusedly thinks to herself as the sound of the first knock reaches her ears.

The door opens, and the Apprentice apologizes for being early.

"Why it's not a problem at all." Ruby assures him as she raises her hand in greeting. "But since you came early, you won't mind helping me carry a few things I hope!"

Better rested and now resolved to the knowledge that Awakened life had caught back up to her, Ruby carries herself in much higher spirits. With surprising energy she gathers up a few scattered things in a blink of an eye, and shutters a suitcase.

The night before, she had explained to her friends that the mysterious visitor from yesterday had been a former professor. He had helped her find an apartment in the city, and now, how nice of him! He had sent one of his sons over to help her move in.

Ruby wasted no time in spinning the lie into a full-blown charade, grabbing him by the shoulder and introducing him genially to her friends. She couldn't believe how much more grown up he looked, she said. He was going to school in Architecture! She beamed. And although he was terribly glad to meet them, he sadly was strapped for time and they must go right away.

Ruby unceremoniously shovels a box or two and a small suitcase into the stranger's arms and ushers him out of the door so that she might say goodbye properly.

The man has barely had a chance to utter a single word.

The poor apprentice, obviously a bit under prepared for this game of "Guess Who I Am," smiles bemusedly and confusedly throughout the entire ordeal, and then upon having several heavy objects shoved into his arms, looks almost geniunly happy to be walking out of the room.

Ruby follows out soon after, taking one look at him before rushing over to the stairwell in the hopes that she might be out of earshot as she bursts out laughing.

"I'm so sorry about that, but you have to agree you were a terribly good sport!" Seeing his hands are full, she snatches a smaller bag from his burden in the hopes that he won't topple over.
"My name is Ruby, and it's good to meet you."

He smiles a little wanly as he maintains his balance with the bags.

"Hi, I am Erik. My car is just down here. I'll take you to your new place if you're ready."

He nods and heads to his car, to load up the bags. Then he hops in and waits for Ruby to be ready to follow. The ride that follows isn't terribly far or tricky to follow.

-Narrator-

As Ruby pulls up to the little building, she can note two very impressive things about this apartment: It's location and it's size. The Building is a sterling white and blue building with several floors. It faces the Tower Bridge with an excellent view of the river and is shaded on either side by lush looking trees. Overall, a gorgeous apartment.

Erik gets out and starts unloading the bags as Ruby pulls up.

Ruby slowly draws herself from her car in disbelief. As her foot slides out the door it scrapes the frame, releasing flakes of rust. When she shuts her door, the driver-side mirror swivels out of alignment like it always does.

Craning her head to admire the building, Ruby whispers:

"Lord have mercy, that is a fine place to make a home..."

She follows Erik into the immaculate front door as if sleepwalking.

He takes her up to the second story and suddenly the last bit of insight strikes Ruby: Each floor has only two apartments on it, and hers is on the second floor. As Erik lets himself in with a key, Ruby can see a very spacious looking room with preset modern looking furniture, as if the room had come out of a Catalog. It has a full kitchen and she can also see a few connecting rooms down a hallway.

Erik sets the bags down beaming and say, "Well, what do you think?"

"It.
Is.
Amazing."

Ruby traces her fingers lightly along the wall as she paces the circumference of the room, as if she might not be able to find her way back if she wanders too far into the largeness of the space.

She tells Erik to put her things down anywhere.

"I'll have to redecorate, of course."

She can barely resist giving the Apprentice a huge hug; instead she decides that she'll need to figure out something appropriate to give Peter.

"Thank you so much for your help Erik."

He smiles in a knowing way.

"You are very welcome, Ruby. Have fun redecorating. I have to go, Mr. Cartright and I are supposed to meet for dinner with the rest of the Cabal at 7 so I have to run. See ya later."

And with that he leaves.

Ruby gazes out her window, out across the bridge in the sunlight. It would be a spectacular inspiration for her next pieces.

Her eyes panning slowly over the view, Ruby begins to make a list of things she will need to do before settling in.

o She'll need to check the wards for sure. They were probably fairly strong as it is, but there might always be something to shore up a bit.

o The furniture would need to be... altered to be more personal. But that part would be fun.

o And she would also give Gregory a call, make sure he knew she was doing well here already.

Ruby begins to scrutinize any magic the apartment, or the building might have woven into it.

Ruby now traces the boundaries of the apartment again, but purposefully. At four places in the apartment, door, window, center, and due East, (to meet the rising Sun) She scores a strange symbol in chalk.

As she works, she murmurs a prayer of sanctuary and solace, the words from a language dead to human memory, but still known by the living world.

At each anchor, Ruby suffuses a single point of Mana into the symbol itself
4 mana spent

12-24 12:23:07 Ruby rolls 9 dice to sigil of ward potency (used WP) 3 successes
7,1,4,2,8, 7,10,8,2,2

Now that the sigil is prepared, Ruby begins the slow process of warding the flat from outside magicks.

Walking to the walls, she begins to painstakingly trace the invisible runes with her fingers; her prayers raise in volume to become a hymn of dedication, of trust, and resolution against the darkness of a sinful world.

As the ritual begins in earnest, Ruby is oblivious of her surroundings...

The ward will be a Prime 3 effect which prevents spells from being cast into the apartment from outside.
Ruby will be taking the Advanced Duration factors by using Pulling Down the Threads.

Interruption will disrupt the ritual, and negate the added benefits of the sigil. Although it certainly won't prevent a paradox roll :'(

Ruby can barely believe how exhausted she is: mentally, physically, and spiritually. She had taken only a few sparse breaks to wolf down the last few remaining trail mix bars from her journey to Sacramento, and the wards had taken a little over eight hours to inscribe.

Now, the final rune traced and the final hymnal verse sung, Ruby drags herself to the center of the room.

The Theurge-Artificer of Dallas holds the sigil chalk before her, over the central mark and heart of the ward. And the other hand sweeps across the room as she speaks:

"Lo, there were writ five sigils to bind their agreement.
The first sigil is the window of the mind, which is portal to the world.
The second sigil is the door on which fortune knocks, and the winds of time sweep unhindered through it's doorjambs.
The third sigil is the Sun, source of living flame to the world.
The fourth sigil is the Heart, the Corpus and anchor to the Soul."

And then she drops the chalk onto the ground, following it until it rolls to a stop.

"And the fifth sigil is Death, the price we all must pay to return to our true home."

Heel crushes chalk underfoot, and the final seal is set to the enchantment.

The Abyss screams in fury, lurching up to punish the ward-author; but its anger finds no purchase. Ruby's soul flares like a beacon, a phosphorescent hailstorm that echoes full of ringing bells. And then finally silence.

Ruby collapses into a chair.

I think it's time to go to bed.

Ruby jolts violently from her well earned rest.

"Sweet Glory of High Heaven, the HELL is happening now??!" She's just about had enough of this nonsense.

I thought this place would have been safe by now.

Hesitantly, Ruby shifts off her covers and swings her feet out of bed.

Peering into the corners of the room, she realizes that she doesn't know what she is looking for.

It occurs to her that if she'd acted faster she might have identified the source of the sound, but now she could simply assess the situation and hope for the best.

She slips on a pair of ratty, but comfortable slacks and paces out onto the cold wood floor.

Gregory used to tell her of stories, back when the Seers still held power in Dallas when no one was safe, and threats loomed even in the most secure of sanctums.

I'm just spooking myself, Ruby hopes.

Satisfied of the emptiness of the room, she pulls aside the window curtain just enough to peek outside.

Ruby can see out across the Tower Bridge, and it is lovely at this time of night. It is a peaceful place indeed...

Then, there is a sudden rush of air in the room, and Ruby feels...something...like hands running up and down her body. They are not gentle and the air feels hot like it came out of a furnace.

Her hair practically stands on end, and her face flushes in surprise.

There is a moment of horror. The room is completely lathed in magical energies, most of them Matter based. It looks like the spell is going to cinch itself, and from what Ruby detects, a massive Unraveling is about to occur. And then.....

It is gone.

There is nothing here.

A moment of stunned silence passes. Ruby's trembling right hand seeks out comfort cupped in her left. The lingering memory of those phantasmal hands, sliding over her draws bile to her mouth.

Realization set in; there was no safe place in this city at all. She had to get out of this room! She had to find someone else who could help! She didn't want to be alone in this cursed city anymore...

Ruby grabs the cleanest clothes she can see within reach, throwing them towards the door. She flings off her pajamas hopping as she goes, and she barely has her clothes on by the time she makes it out of the apartment.

Shuddering as she releases a deep breath, Ruby locks her door just in case before starting down the hallway towards the stairwell.

A pair of mismatched flipflops clop-clop as she strides, and green paint speckles her work-shirt. Having forgotten to grab a belt, her faded bluejeans ride a little too low for her comfort.

Having been extremely pleased with the veiling spell she had tried the other night, she decides that Veiling herself as a sleeper would be a safe way to travel.

The night air outside is chill, but feels remarkably calming against Ruby's skin. It is quiet out here save for the slight rustling of the trees on either side of the building.

Then, somewhere a little ways off, she hears some honking cars and a dull sounding thwack.

Peace in a city seems to be all to short.

Briefly, Ruby considers taking action to shield herself from the cold. But too much magick tends to make her feel sick and she grimaces, glumly resolved to the mercy of the elements.

Lord, I should have thought this one through better, Ruby laughs to herself.

"Although..." She murmurs as she stops in her tracks.

I'm really going overboard with magick today, aren't I? Ruby wonders offhand as she tries to hail a Taxi. I need to find someplace public, someplace busy. Put my thoughts right again.

The quiet night, punctuated sounds of cars and a distant crash is cause for the slightest twinge of sadness, but comfort from the fading sense of fear as well.

Even if this world is Fallen, it kept her grounded in reality. While other Sorcerers would tear the fabric of the universe hidden deep in sheltered Sanctums, Ruby found deep joy in working secret wonders out of hiding where the world seemed so much more real.

But now there was no shelter at all. She needed guidance now, more than she needed in a long time.

Oh no, did I bring my phone?

Patting herself down, she remembered that she had managed to take her keys. Her wallet and phone had been right next to them on the counter...

"Aw, biscuits and gravy!" Ruby curses (?).

She feels awful for what she's going to have to do to the cabbie.
