 A few things to discuss (Baron Quinton)

It had taken them 27 minutes to get back from the Asylum due to some road construction being done. Why the State of California found it necessary to work on the roads in the middle of the night was inconceivable to Antoinette, but it was simply out of her hands. If Baron Quinton had a problem with it, he could damn well pick up the God damn phone and contact CalTrans himself.
She thanked Mr. Tanner for the ride and walked up the path to the door. With absolutely no trepidation, she slammed her fist into wood, sending an unmistakable message that she was home. She waited for the door to be answered.

"Wow. You guys just leave the doors unlocked? Huh." She was amazed. "Mr. Hostwick, I need to speak with Baron Quinton. Could you let him know? I'll just wait right here.' She smiled sweetly and set her bag down in case he kept her waiting a while.

Antoinette thanks Mr. Hostwick for showing her in, then turns to Baron Quinton with a big smile. "Good evening, Your Excellency. Looks like you're very busy with all that. I wish one of these nights you'd explain some of it to me. I'm very interested."

"Well, I hate to interrupt your work. I know it's very important. But tonight was really exciting, and I couldn't txt you because I wasn't sure I was allowed to say certain things on the phone. Plus there are a couple of things I wanted to ask you about..."
Antoinette looked up to see if Baron Quinton would prefer her to wait until he was done working on his Architect work, but he didn't say anything immediately, so she continued on.
"Well, first of all, Lady Dupree took me over to the Seneschal's office with that weird report my friend gave me from the SCPD. Oh my gosh, they were both so freaked out! I still don't know quite what happened, but the Seneschal called for a bloodhunt on Gabriel something or other. Bad news, huh! And then Lady Dupree took me to the concert – you know, the one I was dying to go to? And those crazy plants were there and they staked the singer and a couple band members and then one of the Hounds deputies set them on fire and they all got cremated! Including the ENTIRE CLUB! I mean, if it hadn't scared me senseless, that would have been one hell of a concert."
Antoinette was really getting worked up, retelling the story...

Antoinette loved that Quinton had laughed. He did it so rarely. It was a lovely, beautiful sound. She'd have provided a million Carthian bloodhunts if she could to solicit that sound again.
"Well, I don't know. It happened pretty fast. And to be perfectly honest, I really lost it. I don't handle fire so well... But we went, it was a very small club. And the guys came out, started their set – and then – Whamo! Those ghoul plant things you've been telling me about? Shoved right through the lead's body, staking him right there on stage! And then sort of moving around and grabbing the guitarist and drummer. And then, that one dude, I think his name is Jason -- sort of looks like a girl in racing leathers? He jumped right up there on stage with the thing – totall FEARLESS! So amazing. And sent it all to hell with a bottle of alcohol and a flare!"
"Of course, then everything caught on fire and we had to get out really fast. And I sort of lost it. Good thing Lady Dupree was there. I would have had a bad time of it if I'd gone alone. I guess sometimes you're right about these things... " Antoinette gave him a little half smile and shrugged her shoulders in a bit of appology for bugging him so much about the concert and the party.
"So I don't know. Maybe the city still isn't safe enough for me to be out hanging around in yet. Do you think I should go back to my flat and stay there for a while longer until the plant ghoul thing is under control?"

Antoinette winced a little and looked down.
"I haven't. I have to admit I'm dragging my feet. The whole idea of handing over my baby to some stranger to run and basically look as if they are getting all the credit for is very... distasteful to me. I'm having a hard time with it. A very hard time." She looked into his eyes and wondered if he'd understand at all, or if she was about to receive a lecture on how she was weak and did not understand how to delegate.
"Plus... I've been approached several times by a television show. Oh, I know you're just going to flip out about this. But it's a show that could absolutely put Lash on the map. Kind of a contest, kind of a reality thing. I explained to them that I couldn't film during the day, and they want me so badly, they said they'd shoot nights just for me! Just for me Quinton!" Antoinette was so excited about this, and absolutely knew she was going to get shot down, that she was already feeling defeated. "Don't freak out on me, OK?" She unconsciously edged just slightly away from him. "But I heard someone talking about a thing Kindred can do to make themselves photographable. I think it's a Daeva thing." She winced. "The filming would last only 6 weeks, then I would get right on making a ghoul and handing over the reigns to Lash. Seriously, I would do it immediately afterward..."
She looked hopefully at him, but not too hopefully.

She was silent for a while.
"OK. I will start looking for someone in earnest tomorrow. I'm sorry I procrastinated so long."
Then she thought about it for a second. "Ummm... since I've never done anything like this before, how exactly to you go about obtaining a ghoul? Like, should I put an ad on Craig's List? Or, can I go to New York and sort of haunt the fashion hang outs until I find someone I like? And then try to lure them back with me? Or do I try to get them to like me and ghoul them there and then bring them back here?"
Now that she was really thinking about the process, this sounded way harder than originally planned. "Or, maybe I should go to Match.com or something?"

Antoinette quickly sifted through what he was saying. The bottom line was, she was not getting out of this house to go to New York to scout her replacement. Why was it she never won at any of these chess matches?
"OK. I'll put out some ads I guess? Make some phone calls. But I'm curious – when I hire this guy, is he going to be coming to live with me in the penthouse? All your staff lives with you here, so I just wasn't sure if I should put him up, maybe in another flat across from me or something? Or if I'll need to "control" him and have him live right with me. And when we talk salary, should I be talking a percentage or share in Lash, since he'll be basically running it? Or stock options if I take it public or something?"

Antoinette was starting to suspect something. "Baron Quinton, why do you keep saying "her". Lash's new, well, whatever I call this position will be a "him". All the greatest fashion designers are men. It will lend the line more credit. In fact, its a minor miracle I've gotten this mess as far as I have. Might as well give it every advantage I can."
And then as an afterthought, "Plus, girls are very difficult to work with. They're catty and backstabbing and distrustful creatures. I'd much rather work with a man who is straightforward and unemotional and doesn't feel the need to play games all the time. It will make the entire relationship much more enjoyable."
She smiled. There was more that she could say, but she wouldn't. Let's just leave it there. That's all he needed to know.
"Now, what the heck were you talking about; a show? I have no shows scheduled. Trust me – a week is not enough time to put together a show anyway." She thought uneasily about the utter catastrophy she'd left her apartments and studio in and shuddered. No way could all that be pulled together for a show in a week. He must have been thinking of something she had said about wanting to attend Fashion week in New York, which was coming up soon.

"No. Nobody told me anything! Quinton!!" Antoinette about choked on her tongue. "I can't pull all that together by, by... When did you say? Oh my GOD! What the fuck have you done?"
She stood up abruptly and started pacing. "Three magazines? Coming here? From New York and... Paris?" This couldn't be happening.
That's right. It couldn't be happening and it wouldn't be happening.
Antoinette forced air into her lungs, replicating a deep breath. It took the place of what she really wanted to do, which was bare her fangs at her Sire. She picked up her bag with what calm she could manage and headed for the door. "I'm going to bed now. Please call off whatever crazy plans you set in motion, without MY approval, immediately. I'll expect all this nonsense to be cleared up by the time I wake up tomorrow night."
She reached for the door and let herself out without looking back.

Antoinette stopped dead in her tracks. She did not just hear what she thought she just heard him say.
Turning back, she reentered the room, slammed the door, slammed her bag down and got in Baron Quinton's face.
"Don't you call me "Princess"." she spit. " I worked hard on Lash. Harder than I've ever worked on anything in my entire life. I don't give a shit what you do to me." She put her finger in his face menacingly, "but you are not going to sell my goddamn business."
She could feel the predator inside her, clawing at her, feeding greedily at her anger. Dying to get out and rearrange Quinton's face. She knew it was suicide, but the beast was getting stronger and stronger off her rage and controlling it was getting harder and harder. Just letting it go would feel, so... good...

Antoinette gritted her teeth. And she did sit down. But her eyes never left his eyes.
Though she didn't cognitively understand, the bond previously created prevented her from holding the grudge she so desperately wanted to hold on to. The longer she sat and thought, the more guilty she felt for going off on him, her Sire, who really she owed everything to. Right? Oh... it was killing her.
"I'm sorry. I'm sorry I said those things. When is it scheduled for? I have a lot of work to do, so I need to get started immediately. May I please go back and stay at my flat so I have access to my studio? I have so much sewing and planning that need to be done. And, where did you find 15 models in," she winced, "Sacramento?" This couldn't be good.

She smiled back and took the planner from his hand. When the hell did he get access to that? She kept it in her bag, night and day, by her side. Her Ventrue instincts started kicking in then – Quinton must have his creepy little ghouls coming into her room during the day, rifling through all her stuff. No wonder she was on house arrest! It was just a ploy so he could have access to all her stuff, 24 hours a day. And, she could just bet her penthouse had been gone through too, and now had cameras and microphones installed to monitor her. Grrrr...
"Thank you for being so thorough and taking the initiative to hire all the talent for the show for me, Baron Quinton. It was really thoughtful of you." She glared at him. "I will be sure to email Lady Dupree each day and keep up with my lessons, in addition to organizing an entire Spring line collection show for Lash. In a week. Because that's not too much for one person to handle." She gives him a snide, snotty grin. He was annoying the hell out her and her mind was having a hard time reconciling the unconditional love with the fury.
"So if we're done here for tonight, I'm going to pick up my dog, and go home." Antoinette put the day planner back in her messenger bag, got up and left the room, closing the door behind her, for the second time that evening.
