Rose's eyes share Slade's worry, but shine with interest nonetheless.

"I've heard of people carving out spaces for themselves in the hedge, places safe. Can you do that?"

"Thanks. I, uh, appreciate it, Bill."

A slight greenish tinge flits across her cheeks also.

"And you. Um, what are your plans, now that you're out and about?"

Donna nods, wishing the woman was giving clearer advice.

"Look for pawprints. Will do. Do I owe you anything?" she asks, knowing that sometimes advice, even useless, rambling advice, required payment.

She half-laughs.
"I definately wasn't suggesting we jaunt over right away. Just something I've been thinking about. A way to stay safe, having bottled hedge-fruit handy."

"Hedge-fruit is different. It has properties that no fruit you can get here does. Even in the Chinese market, you couldn't get this stuff. I'm hoping to do some tests to see if distilling or decanting them keeps these properties, makes them stronger or weaker, whatever. And if I can learn enough about them, I might be able to figure out how to booby-trap them."
She stops for breath, then stays quiet, realizing with amazement that she spoke enough to need to stop to take a breath.
"I'm not comfortable going in alone, though. Last time I was there was when I came out. Been more or less housebound at the Boardinghouse since."

"Should I be afraid?" Donna asks, putting down the cracker she was about to bite into. Child like book? Blue with gold? she tries to put this into context with what she knew in Wyoming, and comes up empty.

Rose relaxes somewhat- the crowded pub providing anonymity, and Bill's nervousness matching her own, granting them a kind of sympathy.

"I know what you mean. I've been thinking about a hedge-trip sometime soon, I need fruits for my still. I've got an idea, I think."

"Several months, now. I don't get around much, mostly I stay in and study. It seems safer, especially when I don't know many people. But I know you now, and Benedict, and that Grobbler fellow. So that's good."
She drums her gloved fingers on the table.
"What about you? What do you do when not frequenting popular bus stops?"

"He told stories of all them. But they always came back to Winter Wolf. Im . . . Imma . . . Iminir. He and Bird and Johnny. Trix liked the other story . . ." Donna racks her brains to remember. "Red, maybe? The one who asked questions. But Will was Winter."
She talks a bit too much, too fast, hoping that her speech stays ahead of her feelings enough that she doesn't start crying. Will was big on the strong face.

They walked around the block, then around one more, until they came to a small Irish pub. She staked out the darkest, most recessed table in the place and ordered a drink for herself, with strict orders that the tab was all hers.

"So, gentlemen. I know fewer people than I'd believed. Both your faces are new to me."

"He and his pack were killed. He told me to run away, to "head west 'til the car dies, baby, or you fall into the ocean. Keep silver on you and try to find our kin." So I did that. Car's dead, I'm here looking for kin."

"Donna Palmer. Widow of the Cahalith, Will Cloudcaller." She didn't bristle at being called 'fat' by this strange old sibyl.

"Mate to the Alpha and healer of wounds." she falls into his singsong cadences, the way he'd described her in the endless stories, repeating and elaborating on the exploits of his pack.

If he was looking for a reaction, he got it. She shakes slightly, blinks a few times, then laughs, relief flooding her features.

"I see. Well, I was right. You're older than you look."

Donna's starting to get worried. She feels the instinctive tickle up her spine that she felt around the wolves, like the electric rush of the feel of warm fur, telling her this woman is far more than she seems. But as far as she can tell, she's a crazy transient. Her hand tightened around the silver knife's handle, but she didn't draw it, yet.

"I know my man. And even if I didn't, doesn't mean I'm up for grabs." she says warily. Leaving one hand on the knife, she reaches the other into her bag, drawing out the roll of crackers, taking one, and sliding them across the table.

"Who are you, then?"

"Not yours." she shot back.

Donna patiently waits either for a long stream of racist obscenity or something to tell her that this is one of those 'Wolf puns'.

The Wizened he'd frightened before looks down to 'Alex', smiles sadly to see so young a changeling, and leans over.

"I'm Rose. We're supposed to be looking for a way into the Hedge or something else that could make this place dangerous. Got any ideas?" she asks matter-of-factly, seeing as how he'd missed Mother Goose's instructions.

No point talking down to children. Especially this one. For all I know, he's older than I am. Poor kid. she thinks, holding out a satin-covered hand to shake.

**Wolf-Blood, SL4 Blooming with health**

Donna Palmer sits in her motel room, pouring over all the local maps, tourist guides, and brochures for local places she could, trying to piece together this city.

A few big hospitals, that's good . . . and some clinics. I can stay here until I can get a job somewhere, even part-time. Where are the big parks? Okay . . . State Capitol, yes, Fremont, okay, those are close.

She shakes out her purse of the detritus of three days' driving, refilling it with cash, her identification, some crackers, and the leather-holstered-knife she'd never put down since Will gave it to her. She's proud of herself, she didn't catch a sob in her throat, was able to think his name without breaking down. She puts away her bright red and orange tops, choosing a charcoal pullover and pair of dark jeans instead. She carefully checks the room, locking up everything as she goes, then leaves, heading down the street.

She looks at the buildings, all bigger than they had at home, hearing the blaring speakers on the front of the "1530 KFBK" radio station and pausing a moment to listen, before continuing on. When she finally reaches the shady green of the park, she finds a spot under a tree and sinks down to lean against it, her hand in her purse, grasping the knife's handle. She relaxes, enjoying being out of either her station wagon or that motel, breathing in the crisp, cool air.

Rose hurriedly shoved everything back into her satchel and stood, nodding her head in a semi-curtsy to the two other Wizened.

"I think there may be someplace around the corner where we won't hold up public transportation quite so badly. And I owe each of you a beverage, and intend to keep that promise. Shall we?"
