As Harry stands before the Bishop, he can almost feel the the power of his blood trying to resist the judgment being placed upon him. Whether or not it was up to the task was another matter entirely, however.

Slade's brow furrows before he begins to speak. Though the embarrassed tone does not quite leave his voice, it is now edged with a kind of sorrow.

"I have some unfinished business to attend to. Who doesn't, right? There was someone I escaped with. I don't know where she is now, but I'd like to find her, if I can. God only knows how long such a thing will take, so I'll be doing what I can for the Freehold, and for my Court in the downtime. "

He almost doesn't catch Benedict's comment, but when it strikes home, Slade's eyes widen.

"You mean you've been there often? Isn't that dangerous? What is it like? All I've ever heard are horror stories about the Hedge!"

If it weren't for the shiny, brassy color of his skin, it would be obvious that Bill's ears were bright red with embarrassment. He coughs, a nervous habit and another way to tell that he is feeling sheepish.

"Heh, sorry, I probably knew that's what you meant. I just get a little... eager to help sometimes. If you ever do go out though, need a little company out there, the offer is still on the table."

"I don't blame you for not wanting to go in alone. I'm not sure there are many brave enough to do that. I'd offer to go with, but I'm not entirely sure two are much better than one. Maybe if there were more of us."

What was he saying? The prospect of going back into the Hedge was just a little terrifying to Slade, but he always seemed to have trouble saying no when someone needed help, even if they weren't explicitly asking. Come to think of it, that's probably why he was so well suited to his repair work. People always needed something fixed, after all, even if it wasn't something physical.

At the mention of the Hedge, Slade gives an involuntary shudder. He hadn't been in since he came back from Arcadia, and the experience had been harrowing, to say the least. It wasn't that he was against going back in, but it would take some time to adjust to the thought of anyone willingly going in without some kind of pre-existing mental condition.

"The Hedge? Sounds dangerous. What makes that mad fruit better than what you can find here? What kind of idea do you mean?"

"Well, I've been hiding away in my apartment building for the most part. I'm the building superintendent, so I'm busy with the tenants calling and demanding I fix things. I usually only come out once or twice a month for groceries and tools and such. It's not a bad gig. I stay where it's safe and I do what I'm good at."

Slade sighs. "Lately though, I've been wanting to get out more. I figure if I try hard enough, I can hide in a city just as well as I can in my building."

"No need to be so formal, please, call me Bill."

Slade clears his throat. "It's been so long since I've talked with anyone else like us. If you don't mind me asking, how long have you been back?"

"I'll have your finest Irish red," Slade tells the barkeep. From the sound of it, Distillery Rose could handle her liquor. Slade could too, or at least as well as any other guy, but beer was more his style.

"Thanks for the drinks, Rose. Can I call you Rose?" Bill asks rather sheepishly. This sort of small talk wasn't exactly his strong suit.

"It we be my pleasure, Miss Rose," Slade says with a smile. He doesn't know about this Benedict fellow, but a drink sure sounds like it would hit the spot about now. Making new friends, if they could be called that never hurt either.

Harry enters the church, gingerly shutting the heavy doors behind him.

"I am ready, Bishop," Harry says. "I have sinned in the eyes of the Lord, and done wrong by our Church. I am here to accept my punishment."

He bows his head, waiting for the decree of the intimidating woman before him.

Slade scratches his head in embarrassment. "It's very nice to meet you, Distillery Jane. As for drinks, I'm not really too sure about that. I don't exactly get out much. Maybe someone else knows where to go?"

Slade falls quiet, but then realizes that he seems to be breaching etiquette, and raises his hand as though he were swearing the boy scout's oath or something similar. "Oh, uh... I, William Slade, too do solemnly swear that I am here of my own free will, and that my actions hold no ill intent to you, my fellows, or the Freehold of this city, and, um, may I be struck down where I stand should I lie."

Oh God, I hope I did that right.

A hard night of prayer had passed, and just as the Bishop had commanded, Harry Walsh returned to All Hallows Catholic Church. Walsh had sinned, and he had prepared himself. All that remained was to receive the punishment of the Lancea Sanctum.

With a grimace on his face, he approaches the heavy doors of the entrance and pounds his fist on the wood three times. Tonight he would be absolved.

Looking at the other Changelings, Slade decides that, despite the air of uneasiness about these folks, he'd like to stay and talk. He had a bit to learn about dealing with others of his kind, and what better way than practical experience?

Looking up at the bus driver, he says, "I'll wait for the next one, thanks."

I assumed that the bus stop was empty as well, particularly because it seemed like it had emptied with the exception of Rose and Benedict after the last bus had come. If it wasn't, then oh heavens, that's embarrassing Embarassed

Turning toward the large Ogre, Slade repeats himself.

"Name's Bill Slade. I can't speak for these other two, but I'm here by coincidence. Today's one of my monthly supply trips, and this is the closest bus stop to my home. I haven't seen this many of us about since I was first welcomed into the Winter Court, so I must say I am a bit surprised to see you all as well."

Slade shuffles his feet awkwardly. This large fellow, Grobbler, seemed pretty on edge, though Slade couldn't figure out why. From the looks of it, the other two were Wizened like him, and at least the woman didn't look particularly tough, and Bill could only just handle himself in a fight, if that was what the purple man was worried about.

Slade grumbles to himself as he makes his way through the crowds on the sidewalk. Hiding in his building all day was well and good, but it did not leave him with much opportunity to buy or drive a car (not that he could afford one on the laughable sum his tenants paid for rent), so that meant he had to take the bus when he did manage to go outside.

Slade was almost to the bus stop when he noticed the large, purple man making his way to the same stop, and at the stop itself, two more individuals who looked noticeably different as well. It had been nearly a month since the last time he had been out for supplies, and all previous excursions he had managed to run into exactly zero other changelings. Now there were four at his bus stop, and on the very same day that he decided to come out of hiding! He hadn't seen them before, but they certainly didn't look like Loyalists to him (though he had admittedly little experience with them). This had to be a sign of some sort.

Bill approaches the bus stop with his best attempt at a grin and greets his fellow Lost.

"Good morning! What a gathering this seems to be! The name's Slade, but you can call me Bill if you'd like. How are we all doing today?"

PostForum: Lost Mood   Posted: Sun Mar 08, 2009 12:19 pm   Subject: Out of Hiding
For Bill Slade, the winter had been a long one. As his Court's namesake grew stronger, the further Slade had gone into hiding. He rarely left the apartment building that he managed, going out maybe once or twice a month to pick up more supplies, ranging from food and drink to caulk and tools, all the better for making the repairs his tenants demanded of him. No, Slade did not leave very often, but he didn't mind. The longer he stayed inside, head down, nose to the grindstone, the Fae would not find him. He had as normal a life a Changeling in hiding could get; his new identity was so airtight that he abandoned his old name altogether. To his tenants, and to himself, the man once called Robert Marsh was now the Wizened Mr. Slade.

But being inside and hiding for so long took its toll on a man. As spring slowly but surely approached, Slade found he was getting restless. He was still dedicated to his Court's methods, but he could still walk around the city and be hidden, right? He could talk to other changelings, maybe make some friends, or ones would understand what he'd been through at any rate. With his skills as a smith and repairman, he could maybe even set up shop and help out some of fellow Lost. Yes, it was time to come out of hiding, out of hibernation, and get back into the (reasonably) fresh air of the city. Besides, he had unfinished business to attend to, and staying inside for months on end would not get that done.

It was time to live again.

PostForum: Lost Character Descriptions   Posted: Sun Mar 08, 2009 10:22 am   Subject: Bill Slade

Mask: Bill is handsome enough, but as a Wizened, it is less noticeable, more average looking. His eyes are obscured by the dark circles under them, and his hairline has begun to recede. His ears are much less pointy than in his mien, and his skin is rather pale white. He is still rather hunched, and thin to boot.

Mien: Bill's skin shines like polished bronze, and his eyes are jet black and beady. His ears come to a distinct, almost elven point, and are seem slightly larger than normal. Bill's fingers are long and thin in this form. His hair, brown in the mask, is white and wispy, reminding one of rising steam.

PostForum: Requiem Mood   Posted: Tue Mar 03, 2009 12:27 pm   Subject: Prayer and Penitence
Harry returned home from his encounter with the Bishop deflated in spirit. She heard his confession and ordered him to spend the evening reflecting in prayer, but that was not all, oh no. The Lord was harsh but forgiving, and so it seemed the Bishop was too, for Harry would have to be punished for his transgressions.

She had asked for a lock of Harry's hair. He was not entirely sure why, but he had a feeling that is had something to with her mysterious comment about preparing to wear the Lord's crown. An uneasy feeling in his gut told him that the Bishop was going to use the hair in a Theban ritual, and if this were the case, it would not be pleasant. Harry knew only little of the sorcerous rituals, but he knew that none of them were for use on friends. Regardless of what was to come, Harry would be ready.

There was a single window in his haven, in the living room, and it was in front of this window that he knelt. Bathed in the cold light of the moon, he once more took the dark, cherry-stained rosary from his pocket and began to pray.

"Lord, hear the lamentations of the Damned," Harry began, clutching the crucifix tightly in his clasped hands. "I am but a dumb beast in your service, and like a dumb beast, I have strayed from the path ordained for me by You. I am the Wolf among your Flock, Lord, but I have been asleep these past months, unable to frighten the sheep into your arms, and though a damned beast as myself is unworthy, I pray your forgiveness. Punishment has been placed upon my shoulders, and I ask not that it be taken from me, but rather, give me the strength to take this burden, and take it well. Allow me to once more become the righteous terror that guides men's souls to you. It is in your name I pray. Amen."

Unworthy though he is, Harry remains in front of the window. His initial prayer done, he begins to pray the roasry. His lips move silently as his fingers play over the dark, wooden beads until, at last, he comes to the end. Then he repeats the process again, and once more after that. Harry prays every prayer he knows, and when he has done that he repeats his first prayer, steeling his unbeating heart against the punishment to come.

He stays this way for hours, kneeling on the uncomfortable wooden floor in front of the window, until at last he can pray no more. He stops not because he wants to, but because he knows that if he does not, the sun will rise, and he, like his Sire before him, will die. So he goes into the windowless bedroom and lies prostrate, the rosary still clutched in his hands, his lips still moving in silent prayer until the sleep of the dead finally takes him.

Harry drops to his knees in front of the Bishop, mouths a quick and silent prayer before rising again.

"Until tomorrow, Bishop. I will be ready."

Harry then leaves, off to his haven for a night of prayer and reflection.

Harry burns with shame, and underneath it anger. The hair, while it would grow back by the next night, was a matter of principle. Here was his better (both in rank, and, he assumed, in power) ordering him to debase himself, and while punishment was warranted, he still felt like a fool.

"Very well," Harry says, his normally powerful voice now quiet and low. "Thank you, Sister, for this opportunity."

Harry takes his switchblade from the inner pocket of jacket and cuts a lock from his graying head. He steps out of the confessional to hand the hair to his Confessor, standing awkwardly for the normally confident and vicious Nosferatu.

After giving her the hair, he asks, "Is there anything else? If not, I will return to my haven to pray."

"I have indeed come to confess," Harry says. "I count myself among the Sanctified, but it has been many months since I have done the Lord's work. I have been so preoccupied with other matters that I don't even know where to begin resuming the work of the church."

Harry sighs, partly in shame, partly out of embarrassment, debasing himself as he was in front of this superior member of the church.

"Is there any work the Sanctum asks of me? What shall I do?"

Harry is jolted from his prayers as Mrs. Scotts leaves the confessional. He hadn't known anyone had been using the booth, but now it would seem it was free. He finishes one more bead of the rosary before rising. As long as the confessional was free, he might as well use it.

Harry slides into the booth and waits for the Sanctified on the other side to give him the go ahead.

Harry needed to get back into the swing of things as far as the Kindred went, but even so, sometimes one must take baby steps. So it came to be that Harry's first stop was the Sanctum's church. He had not been here since he and his Sire had undergone the Creation rite, so he was overdue for another visit.

Harry entered silently and, seeing no one immediately around, he took a seat in one of the pews. He pulled a rosary, made of dark, cherry-finished wood, from his jacket pocket and began silently mouthing his prayers. Perhaps, in time, he would enter the confessional, or maybe someone would come to him. Either way, he would sit for now.
