Once the former Chapterhouse of the Ordo Dracul, this building suffered major damage in mid-2018 while coming under attack by things unknown coming up from the tunnels below. In the defense of this location, the Dragons collapsed the tunnels beneath the building as a final strategic measure, destroying various creatures but damaging the site. The ruin is currently owned by Dirt Nap.

Grounds
Even faded and worn, California sings in the heritage of the Manor – a confluence of Spanish and American styles - from every parapet and every arched window. Expansive, proud, and dignified, the old Mission Revival Architecture reflects its pedigree in its ceramic tiles, grand turrets, and a coat of pale-peach stucco.

Despite the grandeur, the effects of entropy and recently ended neglect still show. Tendrils of ivy slither over adobe bricks, grasping for the leaded glass windows, and blanketing the grand turreted staircase. An overgrown and solitary palm tree slouches from its corner where manor meets the solarium. Tufts of weeds and grasses sprout in cracks of a once lovely arcade and the intricate pathways spiral out from the house; the pattern of which may be of some importance yet to be re-discovered.

A solitary driveway, pools in graying asphalt near the grand entry.

Grand Entry
The foyer of the Chapter House is beset with exotic hardwood floors, and glitter with painted and stained glass interior doors beckoning to other places in the house. A place for coats and umbrellas stands at the ready, while a grand staircase spills out in sinuous lines to the second floor. Stark white walls, keep the foyer from looking too heavy while warm light glows from many of the nooks and crannies. To the right, a Formal Dining Room awaits. To the left, a Solarium and even further, the Gymnasium.

First Floor
Formal Dining Room
An opulent jewel of the House, the Formal Dining Room speaks of the incredible wealth that made the House originally possible. A gleaming crystal chandelier hangs from the ceiling, reflecting light off of the dark woods that enclose the space and sparkles off of the glass multicolored tiles that enclose a nearby fireplace. Above is all of the artwork needed; an antique and hand-painted Japanese gold and silver-leafed ceiling depicting peacocks in flight and delicate flowers in bloom; the sheen of which contributing to the warm glow within the room.

Solarium
A spacious solarium offers a view of moonlit nature just beyond the Estate. Cleanly and sparsely decorated, it boasts only cream walls and small clusters of chairs for Dragons who require a change in their scenery.

Unfinished Rooms
Unfinished rooms still dot the sprawling Mansion bearing the scars of an occurrence that, for most, is no longer relevant. In a handful of those rooms, the walls are decorated with brown-black blood and dried out viscera left like a sort of macabre Jackson Pollock painting. Many of these rooms show promise, with exposed beams of exotic dark woods, and windows that have been clouded over with age. Each awaits a Dragon willing to enact their will for Change.

Basement
The basement, or what is left of it, is a caved-in and impassable pile of rubble. It is a remnant of a bygone age that has made a mark that is still evident in some of the unused rooms of the House.

TOC right
ubb
The Necropolis of Sacremento was formed by former Reeve Arnold Culler and former Heirophant Dirge. These two kindred grew tired of the political life and the alienation of there clan by the other, more glamorous, clans of Sacramento. With the disappearance of Culler and Dirge, the secrets of the Necropolis were lost.

Recently, Kenneth Gilroy began making a new home for the Haunts of Sacramento. While there is a great deal of overlap between the Underground and the Necropolis, one must tread with care, for they are not the same thing. With Gilroy's disappearance, Alice Hart took up the maintenance of the Necropolis, sadly with her falling into Torpor the burden of the Necropolis has fallen to Cynthia Weiss. As time goes on, more things change, and more stays the same. Weiss has gone, but in her place, after a two year absence, Alice Hart has been seen craving out the rubble of what once was. After some time, Alice bestowed the Priscus position to Jennifer Hazelton when she ascended to Seneschal.

Alice moved on from Sacramento, leaving Jennifer in charge of maintaining the Necropolis. A charge for assistance was put to the Nosferatu of Sacramento in June, 2021.

New Necropolis
Haven Entrance
Appearances can be deceiving, but sometimes you can judge a book by it's cover. Or a house by it's siding. The entrance to the Necropolis appears to be a dilapidated house, boarded up and forgotten in a neighborhood of forgotten houses. The paint is peeled, the shingles are falling off, but inside is a slightly different story. The house is worn, but occasionally cleaned and taken care of. Under layers of dust and dried blood the building shows simple and refined lines, with a slight Victorian flair. The house is in complete disrepair, there is no usable space, although what would have been the main living area there can been seen a dried and irremovable blood stain. The cause was a pile of animal corpses, on display, used as a simple deterrent to any nosy kine. Until recently the pile of animal bodies sat prominently in the room, both as deterrent, and as a gesture of remembrance to the Once Regent of the Underground, and visionary behind the Necropolis, Kenneth Gilroy.

In a back room, hidden from clear view by strange angles and shadows, stands a metal door with a padlock that serves as the main entrance to the Necropolis.

*Currently The Aboveground Haven benefits from neither Security or the functionality of the Haven Merit.
It does, however have Occultation *

Caldarium
Just beyond the door there is another flight of metal stairs. From there you can over look the jewel of the Necropolis, the Caldarium. Concrete benches sit along the wall while dim lighting sets the necessary mood. Beyond appearances though there is a peace to location that goes beyond its appearance. The pure water of a pool glistens serenely, reflecting the golden lights set into the wall. Here, the curses of the Nosferatu don't seem as grating or fearful and guests are welcome. Alice Hart once oversaw this area, while also acting as Caretaker for all of the Haunts' underground kingdom. Alice has now departed the city.

At the moment, no one is devoted to for caring for the Caldarium. Jennifer sweeps the area on occasion, yet someone's attention is needed.

The Dark Temple
An altar of wax stands as the centrepiece to this site dedicated to the Dark Father. A shallow pool surrounds it with a narrow walkway leading up to the pale dais. There are candles that can be lit and set floating on the water, where they can cause the Beast to twist in fear. It is a place where only the Sanctified can truly be comfortable. Kenneth Gilroy built this chamber before he even became Bishop. It was here that became a priest in fact. You can still see the holes in the altar where his hands and feet were nailed down.

With the absence Kenneth Gilroy the Dark Temple has once again fallen into acrid squalor.

The Trash Pit
A nexus forms at this spot in the sewers. It may look like standing water but there is a constant and slow flow. Unfortunately, that doesn't clear away any of the refuse that collects here. It's just builds up, creating a place where the Haunts can hunt for supplies. All you have to do is be willing put your arm in the putrid soup and fish around. You're bound to find something of value if you search long enough. Garrick Marlon originally maintained the ebb and flow of the Trash Pit and Regent Gilroy had 'recommended' he be shown gratitude if a Haunt rifles through the muck for items.

With the absence of Cynthia Weiss the Trash Pit itself is entirely inaccessible.

Bleak Annals
In recent nights, Alexander Moore has set up a Bleak Annals in the Necropolis. At his departure, Helen Kingsley has maintained the Bleak Annals.

Bleak Annals Rating *

Catacombs
The catacombs are a twisting, damp maze of sewer passages. In several sections, controlled cave ins have allowed access to the more cramped and harder to navigate older Sacramento run offs, that have sunk naturally over time as cities tend to do. Trick walls have been added. Built at angles so as at a distance, by flashlight, it looks as though the wall is solid. Apparent dead ends that actually lead to a destination. The savvy Kindred might also recognize that such spots offer great kill boxes. Then of course, there's a few closed down tunnels nearby that where any intruders would simply wander off into the dark forever. Robert Cross has been the key man in bringing the catacombs to life.

Jennifer Hazelton has taken over the catacombs. She has worked to clear the refuse and rubble that had made the catacombs impassible with Robert Cross's departure.
Appearance
Jennifer stands at 5'7" in sensible shoes. Brown eyes study her surroundings with a calm demeanor. Her brown hair is long and generally worn down. She wears a shawl draped around her neck and shoulders to hide the disfigurement of the large, gruesome scar from her Embrace.

History
Jennifer was embraced by her Sire to come bring his affiliations forward, into the computer age. She honed her skill, and uses her skills for the Nosferatu Clan and the Covenant that she has chosen.
The Unaligned Nosferatu also spent some time teaching his young associate how to identify supernatural signs - mostly in his rivals. What abilities did they possess that they did not? She spent years journaling their expressed abilities and talents - and their rumored talents - while only informing her Sire of her findings.
She remains in the same city for nearly ten years, still passing herself as a college students to new students, cultivating a mine of minds absorbing the current computer trends and systems.
Jenniferalso maintains a dialogue with the homeless where she first met Joshua, giving tit for tat to learn what occurred on the streets near her haven.
After ten years, she moves north to Sacramento, agreeing with her Sire to use her computer talents for the benefit of her Clan there. He sends a letter detailing her arrival and her desire to aid her elder clan mates.

Sacramento
Soon after arriving in Sacramento in 2011; Jennifer finds common interests with Ricardo Reyes and Nao Zhong. The three bond over their tumultuous Embraces and tutelage; deciding to form a coterie. The coterie soon reforms with Mr. Rodriguez and Ms. Hazelton as the only members. Los Tigres offers its aid to the city officials; glad to help with a few investigations.
Upon arrival in Sacramento, Jennifer becomes active in the Nosferatu clan. She befriends Dr. Josephone Powell and Sidor Grigoriev. In time, Grigoriev is voted in as the clan Priscus. Dr. Powell then becomes the whip of the clan Nosferatu. Jennifer participates in basic investigations alongside Castor Drake and Brenn Lawrence at behest of the clan superiors. In her political life, Jennifer approaches Ariana Donovan and her coterie mate, Conner Greyson.

Along with Ricardo Reyes, she undertakes a mentor-ship with these upstanding members of society. The coterie Triumvir introduces Jennifer and Ricardo to the Invictus membership and sponsors their stake. The coterie arrives at the October meeting of the First Estate; sponsored by the Triumvir. Ricardo accepts a title of function of Soldier; while Jennifer puts her hat in the ring for Notary. Jennifer is tested on her knowledge of Oath writing and with a minor correction, is accepted for her title of function. She is present with Madame Daniella Sage takes her title of function as Au Pair.

Jennifer devotes considerable time to her role within the Invictus. She studies the tales told from other cities. She faces adversity as the Blood of Nosferatu does not lend itself to most of the less common Blood Oaths. Jennifer learns that a Lady Notary in San Diego is nearing her eclipse. Somewhat hastily, Jennifer packs a bag and departs to learn from the accomplished Notary. The education is demanding and Jennifer falls out of contact with her allies in Sacramento. Returning some months later, Jennifer has learned new Oaths and has become more assertive. She is surprised to find that Triumvir is gone - as is Ricardo, Priscus Grigoriev and Whip Powell.
Shortly after her return in 2014, Jennifer attends a meeting of the Nosferatu. With the two Carthian Nosferatu present, Jennifer asserts her desire to become Priscus. Plans are laid for the computer minded Nosferatu trio to create a computer network for the officers of the domain. Due to her achievements, Jennifer is named a Lady in the Invictus by Prince Asa Clarke.

Jennifer departs to follow the desire to learn the best Blood Oath, in her opinion. The practicioners of this Oath are rare, requiring travel to another Notary for mentoring. She spends years devoted to the cause of the Invictus, studying past Oaths to best understand the role of Notary.
Jennifer returns in 2019, finding the Nosferatu under the wisdom of Priscus Alice Hart. As the Priscus rises to Seneschal, Alice names Jennifer as Priscus of the Nosferatu once again. Jennifer spends time in the Necropolis, choosing it as her main haven. She clears out the Catacombs. The Nosferatu studies home defense and security measures, enacting additional security measures for the Necropolis. She is persistent on holding regular meetings of the Family, trusting in the close knit nature of Nosferatu. In the face of adversity from outsiders, Nosferatu come together.

In recent nights, the Nosferatu has become more assertive and self assured. Her demeanor as a Lady now is effectively conveyed by her presence.
Even the damned have their nightmares and the Nosferatu, quite literally, embody them. Something in the Embrace, something in the blood of the Nosferatu lineage, distorts every member of the clan, twisting them in either body or aspect as deeply as the Embrace malforms their soul. A Nosferatu may display one or more physical deformities; these can range from simple to complex, from the merely repulsive or unsettling to the downright horrifying. Nothing and no one can predict what the Embrace will do to a given Noseferatu, and no two look exactly the same; some of these horrors still look completely human but are unsettling, unnerving, or just simply creepy in some intangible way. Notably, certain traits seem to follow in certain "families."

Among the deformed members of this clan, some common disfigurements are: mottled or piebald skin, attenuated or stunted limbs, club feet, hollow-cheeked, cadaverous features, total baldness, blotchy, mold-like excrescences on their skin, pointed, flapped or cauliflower ears, elongated noses (or no nose at all, just slits), needle-like fangs, broad flat tusks, blackened, split or claw-like fingernails, a multitude of warts, skin that is grey, green or blue, eyes that bulge or that are yellowed, red, solid black or pallid white. Their skin may sag or bulge, look rubbery or leathery, like translucent parchment, or be deeply wrinkled with prominent, ropey veins. All these deformities and more may appear in any given Nosferatu. And then there is the smell. Not all Nosferatu have a particularly offensive odor, but some smell like death or rotting flesh, feces, or like graveyard mold or acid. Sometimes this is just an unavoidable result of where they choose to make their havens.

Nosferatu tend to dwell apart from most other Kindred or humans, choosing as their lair or haven the kinds of places others do not wish to go, or even fear to go. The abandoned places, undesirable places, places as shunned as the Nosferatu themselves: sewers, storm tunnels, abandoned subways, crumbling access tunnels, sub-basements, steam tunnels, abandoned or "haunted" houses, attics and storage rooms, mausoleums, crypts and catacombs -- any place that sees few, if any, visitors. Some have the influence and wherewithal to turn their lairs into vast warrens filled with traps to deter or kill the unwary intruder.

Nosferatu are sometimes called Haunts.

Weakness
All Nosferatu are repulsive or at the very least uncomfortable to be around. The cause need not be a physical deformity. A palpable aura of menace, a charnel odor or the undeniable manner of a predator is just as compelling as a twisted body. With regard to dice pools based on Presence or Manipulation Attributes in social situations, the 10-again rule does not apply. Additionally, any 1’s that come up on a roll are subtracted from successes. (This latter part of the weakness does not affect dramatic failure rules.) This weakness does not apply to dice pools that involve the Intimidation Skill, or to the Composure Attribute.
Vampire

This page is an venue specific addendum to the general Character Creation Rules. Please make sure that you have read the general rules thoroughly, as they apply as well.

Please direct all questions about Vampire character creation to the Requiem Storyteller, Seryna.
TOC left

Guidelines
* Characters begin with 30XP to spend after applying the Vampire template. You should submit your basic(no Bonus XP) Character, and then post your Bonus XP Log to the Character Sheet that is subsequently created. Please do not include Bonus XP expenditures in your Character Submission.
* No FOB/new Embraces, unless you make arrangements prior to have a PC mentor who is wholly responsible for teaching and mistakes made. Otherwise, all PCs are expected to know the basics of Kindred society.
*Multiple Vampires - You are allowed two active characters total, with the following restrictions:
:: Your two vampires cannot interact with each other
:: They must be of two separate clans and covenants
:: Only one may hold a Domain Title
:: They cannot combine their efforts (have/aid a mutual friend, have/harm a mutual enemy)
:: A second character requires six months of tenure in the venue
* Vampire does not use Flaws.
* Mage does not use the Sloth Vice.
* Please read the Vampire FAQ for additional information your character should know.
* Please do not use rules/material from God Machine Chronicle, Blood and Smoke, etc...

clear left
Clans
* Mekhet Hollow Vampires are not allowed.
* Gangrel Red Surrender is not allowed.
* Nosferatu Clan Curses must be able to pass as human -- no walking Masquerade Breaches.
* Ventrue may optionally replace Animalism with Vigor as an in-Clan Discipline. Please notify the Vampire Storytellers at character creation if this option is exercised.

Covenants
* Carthian Movement & Invictus: Per the Vampire The Requiem Sourcebook, Carthian Movement and Invictus discounts for Merits do not apply to acquiring Merits at character creation (including bonus character creation XP).
* Prior Covenant membership can be included in a character's history, but the Covenant's benefits cannot.

Bloodlines
* If a Bloodline is taken at Character creation (requires Blood Potency dot2), the Willpower dot that is used to activate the bloodline must be bought back immediately with bonus character creation XP before the character is Approved. The Willpower dot costs 8XP and does count towards the Supernatural Expenditures Limit.

* Banned:

* Please also note: By Edict of the Prince of Sacramento, members of the Kallisti bloodline are banned from the Domain of Sacramento, on pain of death. That does not mean a player can't play a Kallisti, but doing so means the player accepts the risks inherent in choosing to play a character of that bloodline in this setting.

Sorceries
* Some of the newer (read: power creeped) BLs, such as the Apollinaire and Iltani, bring the standard 4th Discipline in-clan but also allow for custom BL Sorcery. These sorceries (Merges, Vodoun) are removed from play, maintaining the +1 Discipline model of Bloodlines.

Disciplines
* Clan Specialties: Auspex, Dominate, Majesty, Nightmare, and Protean must be learned in-game from a teacher if the character is not a member of the Clan. They cannot be taken at creation and 'backstoried'.
* Clan Specialties: Auspex, Dominate, Majesty, Nightmare, and Protean can only be taught by that Clan's respective members. Such Disciplines gained through a Bloodline are not teachable.

Source Books
Most books are accepted for play; however, the following books are not allowed:

Ghouls and Mortals
Ghoul
As of March 2016, the Vampire venue is accepting both Ghouls and Mortals as player characters. Ghouls will follow the standard guidelines (above) but must fulfill a prerequisite:
* Any Ghoul or Mortal character must be 'attached' to a Vampire character. Whether they act as a Retainer or an extension of an Allies Merit, they must have a full Vampire PC who will 'vouch' for them. An agreement must be made prior to character creation with another player. This will allow the Minor Template character to participate in the Vampire game more readily.
* Blood Addiction and Vinculum should be reviewed carefully for role-playing considerations, as a ghoul PC is a complete thrall.
* See Ghouled Retainers for rules on Ghouls as Retainer Merits.

Submission
Characters are submitted using the Vampire Submission Form (including Ghouls and Mortals).
* Read the form thoroughly, as it contains important information.
* Please be brief with the history.

Your submission can be found here once the form is submitted.
* Your character sheet can only be seen by yourself and Vampire Storytellers.
* Storytellers will post into that thread to work through the approval process.
* Please be patient. Approval usually takes 2-3 days.

Beginning Play
People get excited about playing, and some tend to over-narrate. please read some of the items in this thread, The Devil is in the Dots, that describes how best to help weave your skills, traits, etc. into our usual style of play here.
* You should read the Rules of Elysium and Laws of the Domain
* You should join the Social Groups that are relevant to your character
* You should subscribe to, or watch, the Out Of Character forum
* Your Clan Priscus (who should be sought out for Acknowledgment) and Covenant leader can be found on the Who's Who: Vampire page. Getting in touch with your Priscus is the easiest and fastest way to hit the ground running.
* Prepare your signature for posts, using the Signature Guidelines.

Bellemy and Connor O'Brien have contributed for caring for the Caldarium.

History
Jennifer was born in 1974 in San Diego, CA, to a Registered Nurse; Joyce and a Aviation Mechanic; Dale. The youngest of three children, she enjoyed a modest upbringing. She was a shy child, preferring books over outings.

When her mother brought home a home PC; Jennifer was immediately taken with it. Her parents set up strict parental controls, yet it was still easier to socialize over the internet. She discovered a love of flowers and joined a botanical yahoo group; a Dean Kootz local fan club.
Jennifer spent most of her time with her family or online socializing with her 'groups'. She soon discovered that she could disable the security features her parents had set up and wandered the cyber world. She did nothing nefarious, looking to learn for the sake of furthering her own knowledge.

She graduated from high school in the middle of her class. After convincing her parents that computers and the internet were a reliable profession, she applied to a college to become a Certified Information Systems Security Professional. The college was nearly forty minutes from her home town and so she moved into a small studio apartment. To support herself, she became an assistant to the librarian. Her duties mostly handled maintaining the computers, cataloging and data entry.

A year passed by with her quietly progressing in her curriculum, maintaining a small circle of friends from her classes. She continues to spend a great deal of time online, now maintaining online forums about the local library, the local botanical garden and a reading club operating out of the library.

She maintains a personal blog where she writes her experiences and views. With time, she develops a few followers of botanical and literary minded people.

On the eve of her twentieth birthday, she departs her apartment with the intention to meet her friends at restaurant opening across town. Traveling via bus, Jennifer misses her stop and finds herself in an unfamiliar area of town. As she moved along closed businesses, darkened windows and became increasingly alarmed at the general unease that permeated the area, she noticed an unusual amount of homeless sleeping along the alleys she passed by.

At the mouth of one alley, she heard a frightened yell. Peering within, she saw two men in what appeared to be an altercation. She yelled for the aggressor to cease or she'd call the cops when *something* happened.
She recalls only an image of flashing teeth before primal fear took over.
To this day, she's not entirely sure of the course of events. She recalls sinking onto a bus bench, exhausted, terrified and in quite a state of dishevelment. She had lost a shoe and sported a nasty bruise on her arm, a scrape on her leg.

In the following nights, she had the peculiar sensation of being followed on her night excursions out with her few friends; or when running errands. Each time she dismissed it as her overactive imagination.

On one such night after returning home, she found that her apartment had been invaded. It wasn't a burglary - nothing was missing, no prowler awaited her. Her date book had been slightly moved, her closet shifted through - even her book case had a sense that someone had moved something.

Unnerved, she placed a phone call to the police- and hung up before the call went through. What would she say? Someone had read her rather bare date book?
She made herself a cup of tea and went to bed.

The next evening after class she found her apartment once again unlocked. Arming herself with her keys clutched between her fingers, she peered in through her apartment door. She saw a hulking figure standing in the shadows of the kitchen. Something about it was terrifying, wrong and so she attempted to flee.

Her visitor was much quicker than she and quickly overtook her, quietly moving her inside her own apartment with the other residents none the wiser. As she endured the second most terrifying night of her life, her neighbors slumber was uninterrupted.

The intruder was a Nosferatu - the very one who she had interrupted feeding three weeks prior. He had originally stalked her to ensure that she was not a Breach and found her odd ways intriguing - partially her devotion to her online social life. Joshua Homan spent the next two nights carefully piecing through Jennifer 's life - her ambitions, her talents and her current attachments.

He left her each night feeling drained, mentally violated and questioning her own sanity. She found herself unwilling - or unable- to depart from her apartment. Unknown to her, Joshua felt that his Clan needed access to another avenue of information - the modern world of internet and unseen online connections. He was a fairly influential Nosferatu among his family and convinced his allies to help him negotiate a right to Embrace.

Her sire was as kind about it as he could be; taking his deformed maw into account. Nonetheless the Embrace left Jennifer with a fair wound on her neck and shoulder. Her Embrace saved her from perishing from the wound, yet she awoke to find her voice forever marred. It had been serviceable before, now she found it nearly impossible to control its pitch. It withered like a snake sneaking through the grass, plummeted like an old man's nearing his demise.

As Jennifer struggled to accept the change in her situation, Joshua set her up within his own haven - a modified basement level garage of a foreclosed apartment. He had brought along her 'tools' - her lap top, her PDA. Over the following weeks a course of instruction was forged - he taught her the Danse, she taught him the basics of technology.

The basics were all that were reached, he was a particularly impatient vampire who soon found it easier to assign his childe tasks than to learn to do them himself. Jen soon found the majority of her nights cataloging her sire's rivals, composing graphs of influence and areas to be exploited.

As she proved to be as anti social in death as she was in life, her sire taught her how he survived- skulking in the shadows, traversing paths most people avoided. She maintained a healthy respect for the aura of fear her Sire commanded and was taught how to form a Monstrous Countenance herself. She also learned how to strum the vitae in her veins to hide her tools she brought among Kindred from casual notice and eventually the call of her Beast.

She also maintains a dialogue with the homeless where she first met Joshua, giving tit for tat to learn what occurred on the streets near her haven.
After ten years, she moves north to Sacramento, agreeing with her Sire to use her computer talents for the benefit of her Clan there. He sends a letter detailing her arrival and her desire to aid her elder clan mates.

Her Sire, Joshua, arranges for his childe to be driven by his own thrall, Royce Riggan. She wonders if this is his idea of protection or if it is a way for Joshua to monitor her actions.

She is unsure of what her reception will be, but is glad to finally be an independent neonate.

Seryna: /* Examining a Crime Scene */

TOC right
Investigation is the art and science of solving mysteries,
examining seemingly disparate evidence to find a connection,
answering riddles and overcoming paradoxes. It
not only allows your character to get into the head of a
killer to grasp his motives or plans, it allows her to look
beyond the mundane world to guess at answers to mysterious
problems, or to have a 'eureka' moment that offers
insight into baffling circumstances. Your character might
realize that all murder victims have the same digits jumbled
in their phone numbers, she might interpret a dream that
has striking similarities to events in the real world, or she
could recognize why an intruder took the time to paint a
room red. Certain individuals such as law-enforcement
officers, forensic specialists, scientists and investigators are
trained in the art of examination, while others simply
develop the knack through years of practice.

Note that Investigation is different from the perception
Attribute task detailed on p. 45. Perception (Wits +
Composure or Wits + another Skill) is typically checked
when a character could spot something unusual or amiss
when she isn't actually looking for it. Investigation-based
rolls are typically made when a character actively studies a
situation. Dots in Investigation don't give a character sudden
insight or capability in the realms of other Skills, however.
She can't miraculously identify changing brushstrokes
in a painting, for example. That would be the realm of
Academics Skill or Crafts Skill. But she might identify how the placement
of paintings throughout a house creates a pattern
and imparts a message.

*Possessed by: Criminals, doctors, forensic examiners, police officers, scientists, scholars, soldiers
*Specialties: Artifacts, Body Language, Crime Scenes, Cryptography, Dreams, Autopsy Diagnoses, Puzzles, Riddles, Scientific Experiments

General Roll Results
*Dramatic Failure: Your character studies an individual or situation and draws an incorrect conclusion or focuses on the wrong details.
*Failure: Your character fails to notice the details or information for which she searches. It might be right under her nose but she overlooks it.
*Success: Your character studies the situation or problem and finds useful details that answer her questions. A single success might be sufficient to solve a simple puzzle, but more successes may be required to gather extensive clues. The Storyteller may offer small insights with each success in an examination, starting with the obvious and ending with the obscure.
*Exceptional Success: Your character studies and not only discovers useful details about a person or situation, but notices additional clues that provide more in-depth information. Not only have the murder victims at two separate scenes been killed elsewhere and dumped, they both possess matchbooks from the same bar.

Examining a Crime Scene
:Dice Pool: Wits + Investigation + equipment
:Action: Extended (3-10+ successes; one roll represents 10 minutes of activity)
:Suggested Equipment: Forensic kit (+1), surveillance gear (parabolic mikes, night-vision goggles, laser mikes) (+1), unrestricted access to the scene (+2), access to government databases (+3)
:Possible Penalties: Weather obscures scene (-1 to - 3), scene has been compromised by intruders (-1 to -5), lack of forensic equipment (-3)

Examining a crime scene involves studying evidence
and clues to piece together useful facts about events, perpetrators
or a mystery. Roll Wits + Investigation. Each
roll represents 10 minutes of observation and interpretation,
and possibly referencing databases and calling expert
witnesses. Depending on the size of the crime scene
and the complexity and obscurity of details, the task could
demand anywhere from three to 10 successes (or more)
for your character to make sense of things.

Unlike many tasks, this isn't an all-or-nothing effort.
If your character has to abandon the project before it's
completed, he may still come away with some useful information
depending on the number of successes earned.

The Storyteller should share information each time a roll
yields a success, starting with the most obvious facts and
revealing increasingly obscure bits as the investigation
continues. At no time should the player know how many
successes are needed to complete the analysis Ñ he should
always wonder whether his character should invest a little
more time and dig deeper. Storytellers may choose to make
these rolls for players in secret to add uncertainty and suspense.

Example: Andrea Ward is called to the scene of a murder at a local park. Taking stock of the situation, she studies the area around the body to try and piece together what happened. The Storyteller decides that it takes eight successes to gather all the clues available. Andrea's Wits is 3 and her Investigation is 2. The first roll is 5,6,7,8,9. With two successes, Andrea has gathered a quarter of the information available. The Storyteller reveals that the victim died due to massive blood loss, but there are no bloodstains around the corpse. At this point, Andrea can continue to investigate or decide that she's seen enough and move on.

Roll Results
*Dramatic Failure: Your character draws incorrect conclusions from the information she gathers.
*Failure: Your character uncovers no useful information.
*Success: Your character uncovers useful information, but is that all there is to learn?
*Exceptional Success: Your character gains a wealth of useful information from a few minutes' careful study

Solving Enigmas
:Dice Pool: Intelligence + Investigation + equipment
:Action: Instant or extended (3-10+ successes; one roll represents one hour of activity)
:Suggested Equipment: Internet access (+1), code-deciphering computer programs (+2), extensive reference library (+2), extensive library dedicated to the specific subject matter in question (+3)
:Possible Penalties: No reference library (-1); distracting phenomena in area, from noise (-1) to dangers (-4); incomplete clues (-1 to -5)

A man scrawls a bizarre message before he dies. A
ghost utters some cryptic, haunting words that are the clues
to freeing the spirit from this world. A killer leaves a hint
to his next crime. Your character is posed with a perplexing
mystery, riddle, puzzle, code or series of clues to contemplate.
Sometimes these brainteasers can be solved
quickly, such as a short riddle meant to lead your character
to his next destination. Such conundrums might be
solved with a simple success and an instant action. Other
stumpers demand consideration, research, interpretation
and/or legwork - an extended action. For your character
to understand what "Blue Heron" written in blood means,
she needs to look into the murder victim's past and do
research into what the term itself is applied.

Often times, such an enigma goes unsolved until the
required successes are gained. Partial insights along the
way aren't forthcoming, because the elements of the answer
don't make sense until they're all gathered. When
they are, eureka!

Roll Results
*Dramatic Failure: Your character arrives at the wrong solution. Storytellers may want to make enigma rolls on players' behalf for this reason.
*Failure: Your character does not solve the puzzle or gains no headway toward the answer.
*Success: Your character finds a simple answer, or gathers some information or insight toward complete comprehension.
*Exceptional Success: Your character arrives at the answer quickly or makes an enormous intuitive leap.

In recent nights Alice Hart has once again overseeing the care and maintenance of the baths.

She has worked to clear the refuse and rubble that had made the catacombs impassive with Robert Cross's departure.
