The Life and Times of Donovan Ackerman
Life Before:
Donovan grew up the youngest of three identical triplets to a couple in Austin, Texas. They weren't an especially well to do family. Their parents were only fifteen and the pregnancy wasn't exactly planned. Despite the hardships they had, the family grew up strong together. Then on the brothers' 17th birthday, there was a car accident. Their father died and their mother was seriously injured. All three siblings dropped out of high school and sought work. Unfortunately for them a Keeper was also looking for three helpers too.

Durance and Keeper:
Their Keeper styled himself the Gentleman of Taste and Refinement. He was anything but. He was a massive and cruel ogre for whom taste meant food and refinement meant meat. Upon their enslavement each brother was set a task to bring nourishment to his table. While his brothers were made to hunt the Lord's forest and herd monstrous beasts, Donovan was set to reaping thorny fields and orchards.
The days were long in the Faerie realm and the first was hardest. It left Donovan tired, his hands bloody, his skin sunburned, and weakened by poisoned cuts. His older brother weren't much better but while they brought game and slaughtered livestock, all Donovan had to offer the Gentleman was fruit and grains.

The Kindly One was not pleased. Donovan was banished from the high table and made to tend the fire and sleep on the hearth stones. He received only the scraps left over from supper. However, the hearth whispered to him and promised if he would give half his portion to the fire, it would help him survive the coming day. Donovan was reluctant but he knew another day would kill him. He fell asleep tired, hungry, and sore but he slept soundly and in his dreams a man of flame whispered knowledge. In the morning he woke healed and refreshed.

Donovan survived the next day with the knowledge the hearth had given him and the next. He was able to tame the fields, gardens, and orchards. Each day he was still banished from the table, even though his harvest always increased. In fact he was able to put away stores. Each day he gave half his meal to the fire. Seasons passed, each lasting a year. Then Winter came.

It became harder and harder to find game for the eldest brother. Near the end of Winter he came back with none. The Gentleman raged, banished him from the high table to eat scraps, and vowed if he did not bring food the next day he would be eaten instead. Donovan begged him to give half his meal to the hearth but the eldest refused. After the elder fell asleep, Donovan gave his entire meal and in the morning he knew how to save his brother. He set up nets in the fields and then took down the scarecrows and by the end of the day had a whole flock of birds to give to his brother. Their Keeper was so impressed he freed the eldest brother. For Donovan though, who had not brought in as much as normal, the youngest brother was instructed to take over the hunting. Before leaving his brother gave Donovan his bow as thanks for his sacrifice.

The year passed with difficulty but Donovan learned to set traps and snares, and archery. Slowly his yield increased, but never enough to eat at the high table. He was, after all, still just a farmer in his Keeper's eyes. Even so, he was able to put away provisions by the end of Autumn. Then Winter came.

A pestilence fell upon the flocks and stables. Even the hardy fey oxen fell ill and died, the meat rotting off their bones. One day, the second son brought nothing in, for fear of killing off the entirety of the Fey's livestock. Banished to the hearth, he too ate his whole meal and Donovan gave all of his. The next day he chopped down half the orchard and dug up the trees' roots to give to the sickly animals. And in one day they were healed and grew fatter than ever before. The second brother was freed for his skill and Donovan given his duties for bringing in a poor harvest. His second brother gave Donovan a magic rope that could tame beasts.
The year was long and by far the hardest. Donovan learned husbandry, set his traps, reaped the fields, and dreaded the coming Winter. Then Winter came.

It was the worst yet. No animals caught in his traps, the livestock withered and died, and no plants grew. The stores he had set aside sustained his Keeper and his life. Even so, there came a day where they ran low and there weren't even scraps.

"I have nothing to give you tonight," he whispered to the hearth fire. Donovan knew he would not survive the coming day.

Escape:
"You have given me much," the hearth replied "And for your generosity I can reward you but you must make one last sacrifice; greater than all the others. Give me your eldest brother's bow and the forests he hunted. Give me the rope your second brother gifted you and the flocks he tended. Feed me the fields and the stables and the woods. Do all this and I will see you safely to the edge of the Gentleman's domain but you must also carry me back to my family." The mention of family brought to mind Donovan's brothers and mother. He agreed.

That night the Gentleman's realm burned and howls rose from his estate. Donovan and a man of flame fled into the Thorns. The flames prevented pursuit from the manor. Unfortunately the Hedge held more dangers.

Life After Arcadia:
Donovan emerged from the Hedge in Austin with briar wolves on his heels. Luckily the Summer court saved him and Hearthfire. Donovan joined the court soon after. He stayed in Texas a while with Hearthfire but eventually felt called to search for his mother. Asking old acquaintances, he found out his fetch had moved to California and his mother had followed.

Fetch:
Donovan knows his fetch is a politician or lawyer of some kind and living in Sacramento.

Mask:
Most of the time he is hunched over, crouching, sitting on his heels or in some other posture that belies his six foot height. His skin is very tanned and weather worn from long days working outside. Callouses cover his hands and feet. As a general rule Donovan wears durable clothes. Most of it is old and patched. As often as he can get away with it, he doesn't wear shoes. If any terrain is tough enough to get him in footwear, he'll wear boots.

Mein:
Donovan's Mein is fairly similar to his Mask. While he stays the same height his body and limbs become wiry and lanky, like he's been starved. His callouses are noticeably thicker. His fairie nature manifests in other ways. Grain dust and bits of chaff cling to his clothes. Straw and small twigs stick out of his hair. He constantly has mud on his hands. Loam is caked on his feet. Small plants sprouting from the dirt. Probably most distinct though is the smell. Sweat, hay, fresh turned earth, scents of fey animals and fruit, and (by far the strongest) manure.

Mantle:
Those close to Donovan always feel the heat of the sun beating down on them; even in shade, indoors, or at night.

Luckily the Summer court saved him and Hearth. Donovan joined the court soon after. He stayed in Texas a while with Hearth but eventually felt called to search for his mother. Asking old acquaintances, he found out his fetch had moved to California and his mother had followed.

Fetch:
Donovan knows his fetch is a politician or lawyer of some kind and living in Sacramento. OOC: His fetch is providing for his mother, making it a problem to kill it. His mother also knows that the fetch is not the original but still considers it her son. I plan for him to have to strike up an uneasy alliance with his fetch and an uncertain relationship with his mother.

|Appearance=Kenneth is around 6'2" but you'd hardly notice it. His hunched shoulders and downcast eyes take away any social advantage his hieght might provide. A toddler could look down on him. The fact that he's thin and a little disproportioned doesn't help. His arms and legs are broomstick thin, his neck seems to long, his ears too big, his chin too small. All that aside he could still pass simply odd looking if not for his curse. Looking at him, you know he is less than you. So low it actually causes disgust. It's the same type of feeling you might feel looking at a noxious and dangerous vermin or parasite.
Kenneth was a college student from a well to do family. A large part of going to college had been to avoid the draft. He
suffered a mental breakdown a couple semesters in though and was sent to therapy to recover. His therapist had little interest in getting him back to his mortal life and Embraced him instead. Tabitha Jairus did not have the usual desires when she Embraced her childe. She was a devout Lance and had tried to uphold all traditions when possible and so was reluctant to Sire offspring. Additionally she was fiercely protective of her position in her institution and paranoid of it being usurped. However, her Sire, Elija, wouldn't have any excuse to not spread the influence of their clan Through social pressure from him and other related Kindred she was forced to bend.

Even after siring she somewhat deliberately tried to set him up for failure. Nothing as blatant as refusing to teach him proper court etiquette or anything. However she kept him focused on mortal research while denying training in practical applications; drilled in an extremely submissive attitude when dealing with other vampires; didn’t teach him offensive powers; and made sure he couldn’t challenge her socially either.

While Kenneth didn’t know the exact reasons behind her treatment, he was savvy enough to know she wasn't giving him all the tools he needed to survive. He shored up some of his inexperience, despite her tight control over him. He also worked to make sure he can get away as soon as he can.

His grandsire helped a lot in that regard. Not only did they help get a researcher position in Sacramento, they made sure his sire didn’t refuse to let him go when he did. Unfortunately he also left before his blood was strong enough to join the bloodline. As his sire so eagerly explained when he left; until he became a Morotrophian, neither she nor his grandsire would offer him any further help

Court
The Onyx Court hides under layers of deception like a seed under snow-covered ground, hardening themselves on a diet of midwinter sorrow.

We are the Onyx Court. The court of secrets, deceit and hidden things. We must remember the nature our stone. For like the Onyx, we come in many shades and hold our deeper truths hidden. Onyx is said to banish grief and bring fortune to the possessor of it. So too must we banish our sorrow and bring fortune upon ourselves.

We are the Silent Arrow. The deadliest weapon, our strikes are true and the evidence of its passing minimal. We are the ice and cold and with the coming spring warm and light. All evidence of our passing vanishes into the air and ground.

We are the Court of Sorrow. We mourn what is passed. We mourn what is gone. Yet we must stand tall. For there is work to do. Things that must be done. And only Winter can do these tasks.

The Ice Law
* Let Every Court Know Its Function
* Hide Your Love and Hate
* Prepare Your Farewells
* Keep the People Lost to Every Outsider

Titles
Winter Sovereign
The King/Queen of Sorrow, the exceptional bearer of sorrow and pain in a Freehold.

Flowing Page
In the Onyx Court, liquid symbolizes flexibility, mobility and unreliability. Most Flowing Pages are responsible for little more than relaying messages and keeping quiet. Flowing Pages are occasionally asked to travel, scouting locales to see if they could support winter cottages or host threats to the Lost.

Squire of the Frost
A step up from a Flowing Page, Squires of the Frost comes to understand his Court’s broad security policies. He knows what Winter’s citizens will do when enemies assail the freehold and learns the lies everyone’s supposed to tell about confidential matters — even if he doesn’t know the whole truth himself. More winter cottages reveal themselves at this stage, along with some of the Court’s
other resources: money, political connections and even a few Trifles.

Iceclad Armiger
Armigers and their Lore sit at the pinnacle of the local Court, whereas Squires of the Frost spend the Court’s basic resources it is Iceclad Armigers who are expected to invest them in projects that leave Winter’s Lost wealthy and safe. They are also reliable in expanding any supernatural knowledge so as to avoid entanglements from outside dangers.

Onyx Thane
An Onyx Thane studies mystical matters, above and beyond the simple demographics and warnings of previous Lores. The Lore of the Onyx Mirror contains maps of the Hedge and dream-lore. Onyx Thanes inherit responsibility for the local Court’s Tokens, goblin fruit preserves and other supernatural artifacts. If the Court has a secret Trod, the Lore tells of it. He also learns the Immutable Signs of the Lords Unbidden, so that he might recognize their commands.

Unbidden Lord
The Lords Unbidden hide at the cold summit of the Winter Court, privy to a Lore that encompasses the great mysteries of the Lost — or so the legends say. Not many know the truth and the Unbidden Lords prefer it this way.

Sun Banisher
Sun Banishers destroy evidence. They burn notes, wipe hard drives, vacuum stray hairs and wreck DNA evidence (though this last is tricky business, to say the least). The Sun Banisher’s title is usually one of the best-known in the freehold, because the Court allows them to hire out their services.

Lord of the Inhospitable Chamber
This title belongs to courtiers who interrogate and imprison people on the Silent Arrow’s behalf. The “inhospitable
chamber” is an allegory; the ideal Lord knows how to isolate his prey and without locks and bars. Friends keep their distance, enemies chase him to places where he’s a disconnected stranger — and all the while, the Lord monitors him, even appearing in disguise to extract secrets.

Archer of the Lonely March
The Archers are the Winter Court’s scouts. Centuries ago, they ranged through the coldest wild places, looking for mountain caves and secret valleys where Winter’s Lost could flee in troubled times. Nowadays, an Archer of the Lonely March is more likely to explore foreign cities, hidden tunnels and abandoned warehouses.
The Necropolis of Sacremento was formed by former Reeve Arnold Culler and former Heirophant Dirge. These two kindred grew tired of the political life and the alienation of there clan by the other, more glamorous, clans of Sacramento. With the disappearance of Culler and Dirge, the secrets of the Necropolis were lost.

Recently, Kenneth Gilroy has begun making a new home for the Haunts of Sacramento. He has even managed to get The Deep Kingdom recognized as a Tenurial Domain. While there is a great deal of overlap between the Underground and the Necropolis, one must tread with care, for they are not the same thing.

New Necropolis
Haven Entrance
In a dilapidated house without windows there's set of stairs leading below ground. Light filters down the concrete stairs, barely enough illuminating the pile of dead animals rotting in the middle of the floor. Moldering corpses of rats, cats, and occasionally dogs fill the air with the awful scent of decay. If you can stand to look around more, you see a metal door with a padlock hidden in shadows beyond the grisly scene. It serves as the main entrance to the Necropolis.

Caldarium
Just beyond the door there is another flight of metal stairs. From there you can over look the jewel of the Necropolis, the Caldarium. It may not seem like much, only a concrete bench with dim lighting. However, there is a peace to location that goes beyond the simple accouterments. The pure water of a pool glistens serenely, reflecting the golden lights set into the wall. Here, the curses of the Nosferatu don't seem as grating or fearful and guests are welcome. Alice Hart oversees the construction of this area, while also acting as Caretaker for all of the Haunts' underground kingdom.
The Dark Temple
An altar of wax stands as the centerpiece to this site dedicated to the Dark Father. A shallow pool surrounds it with a narrow walkway leading up to the pale dais. There are candles that can be lit and set floating on the water, where they can cause the Beast to twist in fear. It is a place where only the Sanctified can truly be comfortable. Kenneth Gilroy built this chamber before he even became Bishop. It was here that became a priest in fact. You can still see the holes in the altar where his hands and feet were nailed down.

The Trash Pit
A nexus forms at this spot in the sewers. It may look like standing water but there is a constant and slow flow. Unfortunately, that doesn't clear away any of the refuse that collects here. It's just builds up, creating a place where the Haunts can hunt for supplies. All you have to do is be willing put your arm in the putrid soup and fish around. You're bound to find something of value if you search long enough. Garrick Marlon maintains the ebb and flow of the Trash Pit and the Nosferatu Priscus has 'recommended' he be shown gratitude if a Haunt rifles through the muck for items.

Catacombs
While still under construction, the catacombs are a twisting, damp maze of sewer passages. In several sections, controlled cave ins have allowed access to the more cramped and harder to navigate older Sacramento run offs, that have sunk naturally over time as cities tend to do. Trick walls have been added. Built at angles so as at a distance, by flashlight, it looks as though the wall is solid. Apparent dead ends that actually lead to a destination. The savvy Kindred might also recognize that such spots offer great kill boxes. Then of course, there's a few closed down tunnels nearby that where any intruders would simply wander off into the dark forever. The whole mess is the idea of Jack Carrigan and he frequently is found working and wandering the confusing halls of the Catacombs.

Old Necropolis
Sewer Entry
: The trio proceeds into the sewer, and... it's a concrete tube. Which is pretty all that can be said about such a thing, other than the steady flow of water. That's a rippling black ribbon that reflects light, at times things float by; flotsam, jetsam, dead rats, small toys, clumps of paper... Definitely nothing you'd want to investigate more thoroughly.

: Eventually they find where Ajax began. The sewer opens into a transverse connecting several drainways, and overhead is a metal grate. It's impossible to hear much with the soft echoes of running and dripping water, but things seem calm 'topside'. The transverse connects on the other side to two sewer tunnels.

: Again, Brenn notes the green and blue alphanumerics labeling the tunnels.

Train Station
: The tunnel opens into an unusual scene that Conner and Brenn have seen before; the ceiling rises and the walls widen into a large underground chamber, in which an old railroad car sits to one side. The room is pitch black; A worn, dirty couch is next to the train, and there's a piano.

The Deep Kingdom is the Tenurial Domain of Kenneth Gilroy. It includes the Necropolis of Sacramento, as well as all surrounding underground areas. While primarily a place where Haunts make their home, the Underground is open to those of other Clans wishing to make a Haven or Sites below ground.
All Laws of the Domain apply within the Underground, with the follow exceptions

* Any Law may govern this tenurial Domain so long as it does not conflict or usurp the Prince's Law.
* The Regent may appoint any he sees fit to enforce the above privileges.
* The Caldarium and Dark Temple are considered Elysium and all rules of conduct apply. The Regent, Sheriff, Hound, Prisci, and Caretaker are exempt from restrictions upon weapons and gifts of Blood.
* A one time gift of Vitae mixed with a lock of hair shall be leveraged against those wishing to gain the rights within the Deep Kingdom (to include acknowledge and contributing Nosferatu).
* Beasts or vermin may be fed upon freely but the corpses must be laid at the entrance of the Necropolis.
* The hunting of Kine may only be done under the Cloak of Night.
* As a reminder of the Hell that awaits all the Damned, there shall always be a candle lit in the Caldarium. It shall be the Caretaker's responsibility to keep it lit.
* Tenancy may be asked by those who have contributed significantly to the Necropolis or its entrance and shown a willingness to protect the Domain at large from its enemies.
Life Before

Noah’s parents were always busy while he was growing up. They both worked and often had to take over time. Luckily His grandmother on his mother’s side lived nearby enough to act as emergency babysitter. Noah loved going to her house. It smelled like flowers and she was always teaching him stuff. She did scrap-booking, read to him, taught him to cook , and even got him his very own camera.
Then the terrible teens hit and they hit hard. He fell in with the “wrong crowd”. He turned his talents to making fake IDs to get into bars or clubs and hacking the schools computer system to adjust his grades. He began distancing from his family. Going to Granma’s became the epitome of uncool. And the sad fact was that age was catching up with her. Her mind began to weaken and she required care. She was ancient, always tried to make him do chores, and her house smelled like old potpourri. With little supervision from his parents and in misguided attempts to proclaim independence, Noah ditched his responsibilities to hang out with his friends more often than not. And that’s what he did one night; he sat her down in a cushioned chair, gave her one of his old scrapbooks to mumble incoherently over, and snuck out.
She was still seated in that chair with scrapbook in hand the next day. Dead eyes stared blankly at the page. The smell of rot mixed with flowers, making him gag. The consequence and guilt of having left her to die alone and forgotten nearly crushed him.
The arrangements were made and invitations sent out. His mother gave him one specifically. However, when the day of the funeral arrived, Noah couldn’t face it. He went out to the bars instead to drink away his memories. The Lady of Poignant Comfort found him drunk in an alleyway. He doesn’t really remember what she said clearly. It dealt with slights, crimes, tasks, and understanding but his addled mind couldn’t comprehend. The next thing he knew he was being swept away through the Thorns.

Durance/Keeper

The Lady of Poignant Comfort made Noah stand vigil over the dying. Her realm was a graveyard full of grand mausoleums, beautiful marble headstones, and flowers of remembrance. The Lady would silently bring dying mortals and lay them gently on stone beds. Noah soon found the Lady’s curse compelled him to stay by their side. Not understanding what had happened or what he was supposed to do, Noah grew angry. With only one target to focus his hate at his situation, he turned on the person that lay in pain. He shunned them, yelled at them and in a fit of desperate rage tried to kill them a couple times. They would not die though. Their wounds didn’t heal but neither did they bleed. The long days and solitude eventually exhausted his fury. He talked with them, comforted them, and formed bonds with them. He tried healing them but the mortal cuts would not close. The best he could do was ease the pain a little. More time went by and he learned about their dreams and fear. They told him about their lives and families. Finally, one day they said that they had accepted their fate, and Noah discovered the final part of his curse. He reached out and touched their hand. The task the Lady had set him demanded it. They gave a last shuddering breath and pass on.
The Lady would come then and place a hand on his shoulder. Where she placed her hand a black feather would grow. “Remember them,” she’d say “For they have gone to a better life.” Then she’d take away the body, and soon after bring another wounded soul in need of comfort.
The process would repeat then, no matter how much he tried to stop it. He’d try to keep their spirits up, he’d explain what would happen if they gave in, he’d ignore them, or he’d try to make them hate him. It all ended the same. Inevitably they all asked for the gift of death and the promise of a better place. And eventually Noah started to believe it as well. It pained him less to think he was ending their pain than to think he was killing them. It was easier that way, though never easy.

Escape

A hand stopped him as he reached to touch another friend and grant them peace. Turning he saw the shining face of an elderly woman. “Don’t. The Lady lies.” Noah didn’t understand as the glorious woman pulled him away into the mists of the graveyard. She shone like the sun, the fog parted before her, and the wings of black feathers he had gained over the years scattered away from her. Noah started to panic; he had a soul to save. “Wait we have to go back,” he screamed. A banshee wail went up through the haze then. The woman stopped short, suddenly afraid. She pulled him up and forced him to look into her eyes when he tried to look back. “Do you remember me?” she asked desperately. He looked at her again. The Light burned to stare at but he remembered. “Granma? You died.”
“Yes,” she said, kissing him with relief. “Hold to that.” She turned behind them to where darkness and cloud had started to swirl before looking back to him. She kissed him again. “Run!” she commanded. She turned to face the oncoming darkness, as she pushed him away. Noah fled away into the Hedge with dark feathers swirling around him, as she began to shimmer and burn with white fire.
When he emerged back on Earth, he was in front of the tombstone of his grandmother. No matter how much he begged the stone, it would not grant him forgiveness for abandoning her again.

Life After

Noah had been gone in the mortal world a year and a day. His fetch had been dead the whole time. It had died in its sleep the night he’d been taken. His old life was denied him so he set about building a new one. The Winter court welcomed him and he became apprentice to the courtier in charge of crafting fake identities. He wasn’t sure what his durance had meant but he swore to help those that asked to gain new lives. His vow got the better of him though. He ended up setting up the wrong person with a new identity and accidentally helped a suspected Loyalist escape. He had to flee the Freehold, along with his mentor and cut all contact with his life. He ended going to Sacremento under the name Daniel Leto.

Mask
He looks to be late teens or early twenties with blonde hair and blue eyes. He has a kind face and an understanding look. When talking with him he is always engaged, nodding and giving indications he’s listening to you. His smiles have a melancholy to them, though.

Mein
His eyes and hair turn black beneath the mask. His skin becomes paler as if drained of color, giving him the slight appearance of a marble grave statue. Two stumps with tattered black feathers grow from his shoulder blades. They can be seen pressing at the back of his shirt. The odd feather pokes through holes. Most striking though is that he is slightly transparent, giving him an otherworldly almost non-presence. His mantle manifests as wisps of fog and mist.
Where the Shadows Grow Long
We live our days completely ignorant of the true terrors lurking around us. Only rarely do our experiences draw back the veil of shadows and reveal the horror in our midst. These glimpses into the supernatural can cause us to retreat into comforting lies - 'There are no such things as monsters' - or stir our morbid curiosity. Only a few, however, can overcome their fear and dare to look deeper.

Abandon Hope All Who Enter
The World of Darkness Rulebook introduces a version of our contemporary world where the supernatural is real. Players join to tell tales of mystery and horror, where theme, mood and plot are more important to a character's experiences than his weapons or equipment. Inside are rules for character creation, task resolution, combat and any activity your character attempts as he delves into the shadows.
The Pilgrimage is a long and lonely road, but every Promethean must walk it. The Created do not come into the world knowing what steps to take upon this road. Some things are best left forgotten. But why should that hold us back?<br />
The ancients hoarded their magic and sealed it in secret redoubts, hidden from Sleepers and the debased spells of our age. The lords of these storehouses are long gone, but their enchantments remain, enigmas to confound us, their heirs in magic. In some of these places, the guardians charged with their protection still wait, ready to destroy interlopers.
But I have a map, and I know certain secrets.<br />
Are you with me?<br />
— Athos, Mysterium explorer

Some Things Are Best Left Forgotten

The exiles of Atlantis hoarded their artifacts in magically sealed and guarded redoubts, hidden from Sleepers and common spells. The masters of these storehouses are long gone, but their enchantments remain, enigmas to confound all who would seek them — but seek them some do. Mages obsessed with the power of the ancients scour the material and Shadow realms for these places, ignorant of the things that still guard them. Few of these explorers ever return.

A chronicle book for Mage: The Awakening™
* Surveys the hidden temples, storehouses, libraries and refuges of the ancient Atlantean mages
* The legend of Atlantis and how it has changed throughout the ages, including many forgotten theories about the Awakened City
* Temple guardians, enchanted items, and all manner of beasts found near Atlantean ruins
* The secret Atlantean "temples" of Astral Space
