    QuoteQuote:
Jack looked to the others when the sound rumbled the conversation to an end. A wave of anxiety washed over the Hare as she looked around the room. Her foot tapped against the ground instinctively as she looked to the others. Unsure if they knew what had just happened or not. Her eyes landed on Xian who had looked down, before swiftly moving to the Window.

Peering through the glass the winter courtier let out a gasp as her eyes caught the first sighting of what was happening at the Four Seasons Hotel.

    What...the...hell

"Guys..." was the only thing the Beast could put to words.

Spook swiveled about to look out the door of the shop while rubbing the back of his head. He had bumped his noggin with the initial thunderclap and was now face to face with…the open/close sign blocking his view. He slapped it out of his way and pressed his face up against glass.

For the first time that day his false façade cracked…then broke…then melted away entirely. It was replaced by an expression of shear shock and terror. He pulled open the door and took a few slow and unsteady steps outside without blinking. This is a nightmare…it has to be.

Ava's mouth had only just shut after her question when the thunder cracked. She jumped, unprepared for the noise, and looked around as well, briefly meeting Jack's bewildered gaze. As Spook opened the door she slipped out after him.

Stepping out onto the sidewalk, she stood transfixed, watching in a mixture of fascination and horror as she tried to figure out what exactly she was seeing. "I don't... what's happening?" Her tone was faint and distracted, the question mostly directed to herself.

She hardly knew anyone in this city, there was no one to call, no one to check on. Well, no one she knew intimately; there were plenty of Lost to be concerned about. Mind slowly grinding on despite her shock, she began to feel for her car keys in her bag.

As the rumbling began, Llewelyn's face paled. Another earthquake? He turned with everyone else to the window to see the horror unfolding as the 4 Seasons burst into flames. Too shocked for works, the best Llewelyn seemed to be able to manage was a gasp of horror. 'Big' Lou ran out onto the street, paying no mind to the deal that was in the process of being organized. This is Orleans all over again... "Any of you got a car? We need to haul ass an' get over there." He shouted to the group members anxiously.

Those at Xan He’s shop stumble outside the bright flash and smoke of the burning Four Seasons fils the sky. In that moment those gathered witness the death of a King, then something like screaming and something like laughter follows what could be moving shadows along the street.

The screams made sense. All of Sacramento, as far as the Darkling was concerned, should be screaming about now. As the initial shock waned, he may have said something forgettable to the other Changelings. Spook wasn’t sure. He wasn’t sure of much of anything at the moment. As the numb gears in his head began turning, they chugged faster and faster until they sped off with the momentum of his thoughts and fears.

He tried to work a bit dream magic, but there was no answer. Of course, not. This is too incredibly real...but it was worth checking. With his pledge not even dry upon the Wyrd their stronghold now burned in the distance, perhaps destroyed. Had he broken his oath? Was he breaking it right now? Had they all failed their Freehold by leaving its limits in its greatest time of need?

Balling up his squishy fist Spook used his fears of failure to crush his doubts of it. No. This was not over. Fate would not allow them to fail so completely so quickly; although she was being particularly wicked this cursed day. He turned to the others with a renewed look in his eye. No mask, no disguise; just determination.

“You’re right. We need to…” He stopped. The laughter they heard was chilling.

Jack felt like a stone had been jammed in her throat. Her eyes fixated on the scene of fire which erupted around the place she had just hoped to declare home. She stood fixated in the street after moments of exiting the shop, where she had heard the rumble when the nightmarish event had begun. She absolutely still as the scene washed over her, save for her foot which stamped the the ground in several short bursts. A nervous habit, no, a call of warning.

Run, Jack. Get out of here the first thought in her mind. Take to ground, prepare your goodbyes. The Law of Winter.

Yet Jack had already said goodbye, from San Francisco, and came here.It wasn't fair, this couldn't be true. The urge to turn and run away from all this was like a fire in her blood.

"I shall remember your kind offer of assistance and promise not to abuse it or the spirit of generosity that has offered such. I firmly believe that the Freehold stands on our willingness to lend what aid we can to each other."

Mr.Bates voice lingered in her mind for a moment, the words he had told Jack after he had helped her begin to settle in. Her heart sank, than it struck her. It wasn't a hotel burning. It was a Freehold, her Freehold, and she had an oath to uphold, a favor to pay. Other lost were there right now. Her mantel froze around her, the frost creeping towards the Hare.

Find the sovereigns...katrin, gather others, find a cottage, a safe haven. She didn't know of any dedicated safe havens had not been there long...The Forge. It was far enough from the hotel but others knew it, a place to gather.

Not the circumstances I wish to meet the Queen in...

She turned hearing Big Lou urge for them to go to the Hotel.

"We need to get everyone to a safe-" She paused suddenly as her attention was pulled to the shadowed shapes emerging on the street.

"Oh fuck no." Lou moaned in horror as the freehold... No, HIS freehold, was turned to ash and dust before his eyes. However, instead of panicking and losing himself in the moment, Llewelyn pulled his head together. We need to work out what is going on, and how we can help anyone stuck over there. However, his thoughts were interrupted by the strange shadows and sounds moving down the street. He turned his head backwards to the shop, opening the door quickly if the shopkeeper had remained inside. "Xian, What the fuck is going on out here?" He asked fearfully.

They were there, she knew they were. About to give up and actually tear her eyes away from the scene unfolding in the distance to look at what she was doing, her fingers finally curled around the keys and she ripped her hand from the bag. "I do, I have a car," she called, answering Llewellyn's question from several moments before. It was a small car, but it would get them where they needed to go. Another time she would've been concerned about its cleanliness or lack thereof, but that really couldn't have mattered less at the moment.

"I have a car," she repeated, staring down at her car key. She was only parked a few blocks away, it would take them long to get there. It wouldn't take them long, but it would be easier if she just got it herself. Get it herself, get in and drive - back here to pick them up; go get your fucking car. Move!

She began to move again at an almost frantic speed. Lifting the strap of her bag over her head she pulled it off and thrust it into Jack's hands. "Hold that, I'm getting my car." Her voice was louder and harsher than usual, partially because she couldn't tell if anyone as paying attention to much aside from the incredible disaster occurring some distance away, and she wanted to be heard.

Taking one last look toward the Four Seasons, she pried herself away and took off in a sprint down the block, key digging into the palm of her hand. The screaming, laughing sound rung in her ears and she tried not to look into the street, tried not to remember that soon they would need to be driving on that, whatever it was. Almost bowling over several slower, stunned pedestrians, Ava came to a stop at her car with such force she actually ran into it; the hand that had come up to rest her weight on instead skidded across the roof and her side glanced off the side of the car. Stumbling with a grunt of pain, she steadied herself and fumbled with the key, trying to ignore everything but the keyhole and the wheel beyond. One thing at a time. Just focus here. Here.

Wrenching the door open she threw herself into the driver's seat and slammed the door behind herself, taking a quick moment to push the contents of the passenger seat onto the floor. Anyone in the back seat would just have to do that for themselves. She twisted the key fiercely and punched it into drive and... waited for two cars to pass her, ignoring her indicators. Drumming her fingers on the wheel, she had to remind herself to blink. Don't crash your car before you get there. Don't crash your car at all.

Pulling into the street she applied a little more gas than others might deem necessary but had to screech to a stop, a pedestrian crossing in the middle of the street holding out their hands and swearing at her. Fuck you too! She stared at the man with gritted teeth but reacted only by swerving around him and driving on, hoping there were no traffic cops nearby. Slamming on her breaks in front of Xian He's store, she honked once.

The Nix, on the other hand, returns with her car only to have the pedestrians give her the exact look she was giving the car at the moment. But at least it hadn’t fallen apart at her touch.

As the Nix raced away, Spook took the opportunity to look around for the source of the sadistic laughter. He saw them! Small and on the far side of the street bright figures danced around through the air while chasing the larger smoke foxes like quarry. A hedge-hunt outside of the Hedge? No, this was a coordinated attack! True Fae minions could be laying siege to the whole city! The certainty of a devious Fae plot solidified in his mind…one that started with the fall of the Four Seasons and ended with hedge brambles encasing the whole town as it ceased to exist…in this reality anyway.

“Hey! You guys see that? What are those things?” he pointed. When Spook tried to rush off for a closer inspection he was met with the side-fender of a screeching vehicle. It knocked half the breath out of him.

    *honk*

“Ouch! Erm…” Okay, what was her name again? “mmm……Ava!” If he had been a little more diligent he could have ended up under said fender. One quick glance at her through the windshield, however, changed everything that he was about to say. She was just as excited as the rest of them and was trying to help. At least she came prepared with some sort of vehicle (unlike Spook himself). You know what? Kudos, girl. Instead he rapped on the hood and pointed at the creatures floating and flying on the side of the road.

    JUSTIN KINCAID

Whatever it was that had happened, it had left Justin feeling really off his game and more than a little bit confused. One moment, he was making his way across a stinking creek in the Hedge and the next he had been forcibly ejected with the rest of the party back through the Trod in the park. The Manikin couldn't claim sufficient knowledge as to whether or not it was a normal thing and something suggested that perhaps it was not. Taking his leave of the others, he decided to make his way back to the shop where his truck was still parked. Following that, he intended to make his way over to the Forge and report in to Spartan, though he was pretty sure that Duncan had already beat him to it. Jesus. What a shitshow. And if we got booted out of the Hedge, then where did Jezebel land?

He wasn't looking forward to that meeting.

Something made him look up, and he saw it. For an insane moment he wondered if it was some sort of movie effect, and damn but it looks real, then the hard truth of what passed for reality amongst the Lost hit home, and hit home hard enough to make him stand stock still in shock when he saw where it was headed.

    The Four Seasons.

The dragon, for that's what it was in all defiance of logic hurled itself at the Four Seasons and attacked.

He was Summer. Oh how easy it would have been at that moment to dive into a shop or find some other available cover in the hopes of avoiding it's regard, but he was made of dedication and this is what it's about, really. We stand and defend against any threat towards the Freehold, we defend those who cannot or will not stand up for themselves, and this is what I chose for myself resolve and the blooding he had experienced amongst his peers in the Crimson Brotherhood and for that he would not fail, nor run, nor abandon his charge willingly. If the Summer Court had mustered to protect the Freehold, then it would stand to reason they would be right where that thing is heading Oh God. Ignoring the people who were standing and pointing towards the black billows of smoke which was rising from the familiar landmark he took off running in the direction of the fire. His place was there.

Common sense dictated that it wasn't a good idea to run towards trouble because it could be a lure for something even worse. Justin quickly learned that where the Lost were concerned there was always the potential for an occurance which would transcend any known definition of worse.

As Justin reached the edge of the crowd that was watching the fire burn out of control can't anyone else see what I'm seeing? IT'S A FUCKING DRAGON! It's killing our home!" he saw something that for a brief moment created an unfamiliar surge of....hope...and horror....and a sense of it will be all right as he saw a tiny figure making its way across one of the tiered rooflines and heading directly towards the raging monster.

    Who is that?

His own nascent Summer Mantle burgeoned then with pride, because while he could not make out the figure's more distinct traits he recognized that gleam which was reflected from shield and spear. His fists clenched as he prayed and encouraged his Sovereign, his role model, and in some ways a father figure would succeed in striking down this illogical breach into the world of what is real.

What happened next told a terrible story of a warrior's last stand and that there would be no happy endings on this day.

The wind shifted, bringing black soot and ashes towards the crowd who were probably oblivious to the fact that a King had died and all that remained to speak of his final act was a brief bright puff of light and a streak of glowing dust.

"No." One word was all that the Manikin could manage in his tightening throat.

He couldn't cry, because the Talent Scout had removed that capacity for him. He resented the fact that he could only mimic a normal eye blink reflex with effort. He wanted to scream at the gawking masses that You just watched the death of a King, he's died so we can live, but we can't even tell you that fucking much because YOU CAN'T POSSIBLY UNDERSTAND what you aren't allowed to see! JESUS FUCKING CHRIST YOU ARE SO BLIND!

His hands trembled as he brought them up to the sides of his head. He wanted to start screaming and never stop. His knees felt like they had turned to water. He had to regain his composure. He was of no use to anyone and especially himself if he lost it. Looking up at the sky he could think of one thing he could do to honor the fallen King before he had to move on with Summer's call to duty and search for anyone who needed his help. He was hurting inside, badly, but if people survived, he survived, then he could fall apart later and mourn. Spartan would understand.

Clenching his right fist, he held it against his chest in an approximation of a Greek salute as he lifted his chin with pride.

"What did you..." Mal shouted, as the rumbling started, her initial suspicion falling straight onto Spook before the pillar of smoke and flame bloomed over the rooftops. Recognising which direction the blast came from, she staggered drunkenly out the door in a daze, before staggering backwards, flattening her back against the wall in growing horror.

    A dragon.

    A. Sodding. Dragon.

Not Anya. Not Lou. A genuine, accept-no-substitutes, fire breathing, cattle devouring, winged predator of legend. The Apex predator.

She seemed to crumple in on herself, folding to her haunches and pulling her arms in to her tight. Whining softly as she tried to make herself as small as possible, she tugged at her collar to expose her neck in an instinctual approximation of canine submission behaviour.

    A Dragon.

A Dragon was attacking her territory, the dysfunctional social circle she increasingly thought of as her pack. It was attacking her home. Even if it took the imminent prospect of losing it all to make her realise what that meant...

    How dare it.

She nearly jumped in surprise at her own thoughts. Caught as she was in the throes of instinctive, animalistic obeisance. The Wolf could not challenge the greater predator. It would not challenge it. It would hide in it's den, and scavenge from the leavings, and hope against hope not to be noticed.

    How dare it.

Malory Grey was not that Wolf. She was fierce and proud. She had spat defiance in the face of Freehold official after Freehold official, and been mistaken for foolish and spiteful. Maybe she was, but if folly and spite was what she needed to get back to her feet, it would have to be enough. Steeling frayed nerves, she looked around blearily, her fists balled white-knuckle tight.

    "Who the hell is laughing...?"

Her focus darted about, trying to pin the shadow shapes. Their forms were at first hard to distinguish but then she could make them out, strange beasts, hedge beasts. Something about them reminded her something, someone. The thought clogged her mind for the briefest of moments before she cast it aside. It was not needed here or now.

The creatures ran in fear from something, their shrieks of terror warned Jack enough of that. The Hares eyes widen her stance forward and low, as if suddenly to run. The urge was there again, were they being hunted, the sensation pulsed in the base of her feet and up her long legs.

That’s when the sensation struck. The hairs on her arms had risen slowly, and her nose for that moment felt dry. To jack she could smell it, the smell of the air charged, like before a lighting storm but mixed with rose water.

    A gate.

No this was different, the sensation was off, the charge was active and like a pinch or prick she could feel it bite at her.

    A hole. A tear.

Her nose twitched and her head snapped to stare in that direction. It wasn't a gate…or it didn't feel that way. She would have noticed one earlier. Yet earlier she had been distracted, her confrontation with Mal followed by the shop. That didn't matter it was here now, now of all moments and those beasts were running from it for their lives. What’s happening…what is going on here?

“Guys” She said softly, her voice cold and focused. No one heard her.

“Guys” She stated louder her voice stern. Then she heard Mal.

She turned to Mal, Spook and Llewelyn. Her eyes gazing over them for a moment taking in her Companions, Spook seemed…well genuine in his reactions and his attention to was on the beasts. , Llewelyn was taking action at the shop door, Mal was agitated and seemed ready to bite anything. And Ava was…gone.

“Gu-“she was about to speak again when the Horn blasted behind her. Her bones nearly abandoned their skin and made for the hills. Her eyes like dinner plates she turned and looked to Ava in the car, and Spook who was pointing to her the sudden development in the chaos.

There she is. Jack gave her nod before focusing on the creatures once more.

    “Guys, we got a problem”

This time she was loud enough to be heard, her words slow cold, deliberate. The frost seemed to cling to her lips as she spoke. She spoke slowly to warn them…she spoke slowly to not be scared.
