Heathcliff calls Dr. Lazarus. As he listens to the phone ring, he wonders if he truly wants the man to pick up...
As Dr. Lazarus is examining the corpse of his former ghoul, Robert Bridgewater, his phone vibrates in his lab-coat pocket. The doctor does not recognize the phone number, but answers it anyway. For a moment, all Heathcliff hears is the eerie silence that only an autopsy room could muster. Then, seconds later, the low raspy voice of Lazarus finally speaks. "Hello, this is Doctor Ith Lazarus."
Heathcliff gives his phone a curious look as it appears someone has answered, but not spoken. He briefly wonders if the police have found a way to wiretap cell phones, and were listening to him right now. He puts it back to his ear only to hear the unmistakable sound of someone speaking through a mask. Heathcliff shivered.
"Hello, Doctor. This is Heathcliff Staley," he says, his professionalism rising above his anxiety. "Does your invitation still stand? I am free this evening."
"Amber Hill is currently facing an..." The doctor pauses to think of the correct way to word it, "...incident. However, I would not complain if you were to come assist me in the matter of handling it."
This really is turning out to be my lucky day, or night, whatever. Plenty of opportunities to help my fellow Kindred. He tried not to let his mind imagine what kind of 'incident' the doctor has had.
"Of course, Doctor. I can be at the hospital in less than an hour. Do I need some kind of access code, or should I just call you when I arrive?"
For a moment there is no reply, and only the sick sound of what sounds like someone digging through a body. Finally, Lazarus replies. "I will notify security to let you in and to be escorted to my wing." The doctor does not wait for a reply; he hangs up the phone and goes back to his investigation.
[i]Well, you can't expect manners from someone like that,[i] Heathcliff thinks sourly. He hangs up.
