Juspeczyk's newsstand.

Strictly speaking, newsstands were a dying institution. As print journalism became supplanted by the World Wide Web, fewer and fewer people supported the fading memory of print's fading glory.

Now magazines, gothic comics, and dozens of kinds of porn were the rule. And there were enough people who supported these print art forms that Juspeczyk's persisted.

Jordan parked one block up, and walked through a thrift store to their front doors, then made his way to the outdoor stand. He patiently looked over the titles, from conservative The Economist to the latest from Dark Horse. Henry would be there soon, but the subtle Guardian had a thousand faces and forms. Jordan browsed.

The form Henry chose today was one Jordan knew, at least from looking at a picture. White pants, a pale blue sweatshirt, a yellow scarf. The look could best be described as 'preppy'. The ensemble, even the word, would have normally made Henry very nervous indeed. But today he wasn't here as Henry. He was here as Starling.

With an easy smile on his face, he heads to the newsstand and, without much browsing, and asks for a copy of Cosmo. While the cashier takes it off the rack, he takes a casual look at the other magazines. And, by extension, at the other customers.

Jordan choked at the sight of Henry/Starling, but turned it into a raspy cough. The young Mystagogue selected a copy of Book Digest and moved to the cashier. As he paid for the magazine, he looked at the mirror image of Starling and asked:
"Excuse me, is this within walking distance of Curzon Street?"

Henry/Starling looks at Jordan when he's asked the question. While he finishes getting his change from the cashier, he answers, cheerfully, "Oh, sure, it's about three street corners. I'm headed that way myself." He finishes paying for his magazine and, after waiting for Jordan to make his own purchases, starts to walk down the street, away from the bustle.

Once both are safely away from prying ears, he says, "Thanks for contacting me again." he ponders finishing with a bit of Starling's own mannerisms, an 'I missed you' or something such. But settles instead on "My car's a few streets off, I can get you up to speed."

"Sounds good." replied Jordan, keeping up with Henry. "Sorry I got sidetracked. But it's good to have a partner when it's possible. Lead the way, Mr. Starling."

Henry smiles at Jordan 'humoring' him, and leads the way back to his car. Once there, he gets in the driver's seat, and unlocks the passenger door for Jordan.

Once inside, Henry takes a good long look at the direction the pair came from, most likely making sure noone else is coming from there. While starting the car, he starts to explain some. "The short version. I went to Starling's place. In and out, no fuss. He left everything he owns behind, except for whatever phone or computer he might have owned. There was a resonance in his place, of... surprise, and fear, and pain." Having started the car, he turns on the radio to some random station. White noise, one of his best friends. "He isn't out on impromptu vacation. This was unpleasant for him. A colleague of yours and I managed to track him down to Elk Grove, but nothing more specific." Pulling out into traffic, Henry takes a look at Jordan, gauging his reaction, his thoughts. It was hard going, sharing the truth like that, unmasked and uncamouflaged. The truth felt... vulnerable.

Jordan's visage reflected concern, and curiosity. What was it about being with Henry...Jordan almost involuntarily looked at the passenger side view mirror.

"Of course, you're right. That kind of resonance suggests unwillingness at least and abduction at most. Makes me wonder, though, why he was chosen as opposed to anyone else in the museum. I wish I could have been at his apartment with you. He might have left something I could use for sympathetic affinity to postcog the place. Tell me something about Elk Grove. Remember, I'm a stranger in these parts."

"It's a city a short way south. Nothing remarkable, but apparently, that's where Starling is. I already got a piece of him from the apartment, if you need it. That's how I found out about Elk Grove." He waits a moment, before saying the rest of what he had to say. "We could always go back to his place, but getting in is always a risk. I doubt this had anything to do with Wings work. His home office was empty, cleaned. If someone wanted something from there, they've already found it, and taking Starling along for the ride was unnecessary." Something clicks though, something he could ask. "Speaking of Wings, you know any secret recipes that involve Rogaine? Starling wasn't exactly balding, but he still seems to have ordered the stuff in bulk."

Jordan nodded. "Our next step is there, then. If you have a piece of something from him, that's great. If I need to do some divining, I'll need all the sympathetic connection I can get."

Pulling out into traffic and towards Elk Grove, Henry digs Starling's razor out of his pocket and hands it to Jordan. The dried blood on it has started to flake, but there was still hope it would be enough of a connection to the man. "Buckle in, then," Henry/Starling says, matter-of-factly. "We might have to stop for a ritual on the way. My first attempt wasn't powerful enough to give me a good read."
