The Resurrectionists: Laurel Hill

    This wide plateau is like a dumping ground, as if some mortuary god shook out a box of old obelisks and headstones into the dirt.

    The grass has withered mostly to packed earth. Visibility is nil. No one path goes further than three or four yards before being interrupted by a tilted Doriccolumn or a sad mausoleum of sagging bricks. Somewhere, though, you hear the distinctive pop of a fire and the low tone of people talking.


    Do describe how your character is moving - briskly walking or even running north towards Lady Grief? Or looking out for the Lancea Sanctum (and making the required roll for that?)

    Jacque had his duffel in tow as he made his way into this section of the cemetery. His eyes flickered across the landscape, looking for signs of his group. He walks slowly, but with no attempt at stealth towards some of the mausoleums.His eyes and fingers search over each structure for signs of Kindred markings, a keyhole or at the very least some kind of locking mechanism.

    Upon entering Laurel Hill Quinn let out a soft sigh of relief. This night seemed to be all about near misses. They were out now, Maeve was safe, Milton was extremely quiet, but also physically okay, and Connor should be on his way out if Jackson was speaking the truth. She managed to herd the unherdable crew into Laurel Hill as the Seneschal wanted. Now to catch up with Jack, which she hoped was here already...somewhere.

    Quinn knew there were the Arkwright Haunts cows here too. Quinn tried to stay to the shadows and make her way through to Lady Grief, the tall Mausoleums and the low visibility helping some, but not enough to provide any additional cover.

    Quinn made a motion to follow her, and a motion of her finger to her lips. They didn't need anymore excitement tonight. Nor the temptation of drinking from the kine in this area either.

    The feeling of doom decreases as they put some distance between themselves and those accursed creatures.

    In the end, Milton feels a mixture of relief, shame, and smoldering anger. At being ambushed, at being disobeyed, at himself, at Maeve and Connor. At Quinn for her imperiousness. But, at the same time, he knows that this anger is a defense (even if it is supercharged by the dark undercurrent of his Beast). A defense against his own embarrassment. Not that this knowledge does anything to diffuse his illogical emotion response.

    So, rather than speak and perhaps betray his slow-burning rage, Milton holds his tongue.

    And is immediately happy that he has, because it's just at this moment that he hears the distinctive pop of a fire somewhere close by. Immediately, he dispels the mystical enhancement of his sight, though he chooses to leave his other senses set to a higher pitch.

    His eyes sweep the night around them, looking for the fire.

    I assumed that the effects of Dread are no longer active, as they project 3 X WP of the user. But, if I'm wrong, please feel free to subtract 2 from the right of Milton's dice pool.

    A tall stone monument, shaped like a bare, dead tree, now alive and green with vines and moss. The family name reads “Morvern.” Only now do you notice the handful of blackbirds perched above you in the vines, glaring down at you with their yellow eyes. Jack doesn't notice any engravings or oddities about the tree itself. As the Kindred continue to move into Laurel Hill, the night brightens. You smell them first: a mix of body-odor, mud and alcohol.
    Then you see the glow of their fires, turning the faces of the tombstones orange and throwing long trembling shadows through the cemetery. There's maybe a dozen people here, between those standing around the garbage-can fires and those sitting on the mausoleum stoops. The ones around the fires whisper to each other, cough, and stamp their feet against the cold. Those nesting in the doorways whistle, snore or read yellow newspapers. None of them seem to have noticed you yet.

    Maeve keeps moving slowly, trying to mask her pained movements. She cares far less about Milton and his silence, than she does just following Quinn. She's so fed up with this situation and evening, she is just ready to find her bed and pass the hell out. There's another part of her that wants to find out exactly what Conner was doing tonight. Why he was really here and what all is going on with that. And yet, wouldn't it be nice to just curl up with him and sleep off this pain?


    She snaps out of it a little as Quinn points out the fire and she closes in on herself a little. Humans. Right. Gotta be even more stealthy now. She mouths to Quinn 'I'm following you'. A trust is growing back there, something that might be able to be rebuilt.

    Maeve will follow wherever Quinn directs them, her ultimate goal just getting out of this place as soon as possible. She has no interest in talking to any kine. Not tonight. She feels that gurgle inside of her, begging her to go against that interest. She isn't low on blood, she's just injured, but god would some juice be nice to help get her through the pain. No. Focus. Gotta leave. Gotta get out of here.

    Connor comes walking up behind the rest of them, having finished his business much faster than he assumed he would. Time will only tell what the Arkwright Haunts choose to do moving forward, he's given them the means, but will they follow through?

    As he enters Laurel Hill, the pop of a fire catches his ears. The Haunts did mention having a herd here, and it must be the homeless population. Who else won't be missed enough to feed that many kindred? The thought doesn't really matter, most of the population would do anything for their next meal. If push came to shove with them, he'll have to buy them off. He continues on, not stealthily, but definitely not trying to bring attention to himself and the others.

    Catching up, he looks around in every direction for any signs of the Seneschal, so they can meet up as planned.

    Jacque looked away from his investigating seeing Connor and Milton approach.

    He quietly took some steps in their direction and raised a hand to get their attention if they hadn't already spotted him. No sign of Quinn at a cursory glance, to which he looked at Connor expecting some details. He maneuvered a safe distance away from the homeless and their fires to be free of the lingering fear or attention.

    Jack will do a teamwork roll once the team is 'together'.

    Quinn grinned like the stealthy monster she is, and slowly came from the shadows. She immediately missed the darkness as she stepped more in the Seneschal's line of sight. "So this is why our call signs were deigned such, Seneschal. Makes so much more sense now." Quinn still had her sense of humor in tact, her voice soft and just above a whisper. She unclipped the radio from her belt and held it out for the Seneschal to take.

    Her gaze move pointedly over the others in the group, and back to the Seneschal, and she arched one eyebrow, as if to say...well here they are! "Nothing more, and nothing less...and mostly in tact despite the ambush they were subjected to by a group of haunts claiming an area of this cemetery as a haven." The scuffle was brief and had its tense moments afterwards, but they had made it out and unspoiled, for the most part. The band was all back together again!

    "We need to hurry, that little detour costed us some valuable time, we can debrief on the way back to Sacramento. I suggest we get moving before we get any more nasty surprises."

    Quinn's banter seems...off to Milton, given the gravity of their recent encounters. And the proximity of yet more unknown quantities. This time with fire in the mix.

    So, he largely ignores her (though he does frown at her mention of the haunts), turning his attention to Jacque instead, meeting his raised hand with a respectful nod.

    "How should we proceed?" He asks the Seneschal softly, deferring to his judgement. All business now that everyone is back together. Obviously referring to the immediate problem of the homeless encampment they've stumbled upon. The ultimate goal still being quite obvious: find Lady Grief. Discern the 'key' (whatever that might be). Secure the...package.

    It is clear that Milton is ready to complete their task and get back to the city. He's had enough excitement for one night.

    Milton will also take part in a teamwork roll.
