There were far more books on the table than could be read in the tie it would take for the library to close. JC didn't care. Not exactly. Part of him cared to make the life of the poor librarians as painless as possible. However, life had only just him allowed him to even enter the library and he wasn't about to give up his cross referenceable material to make a librarian's life easier. Sure, public libraries were the boon of homeless existance for the most part, but Kine society didn't account Kindred and the reality of sunset. JC had had to wake, move to the library and collect a number of books. Alll within a certain number of minutes. Because in a certain number of minutes the space of knowledge would close. Expelling the blood sucking parasites that wished desperately to read the words they offered.

Which was hard enough as it was. The Christian church had done its job (maybe even the Lance). There were few books on modern paganism. Fewer still that weren't New Age. Granted, JC wasn't sure if he should be focusing on New Age material. However, given Kindred propensity for the ancient and tradition, he was trying to focus on older sources.

    Havamal, Eddas, the Ulster Cycle.

It was... boring. It took effort to remain focused and the Gangrel mind didn't help. It looked for a distraction. A meal.

Something beyond the pile of pages and words he'd set in front of it.

Originally, Helen had just wanted to get something to look into the history and sites of Sacramento and do some digging on some local stuffs. That and the internet access at the place were the main reasons she'd gotten that library card. The issue with going to the library with only a vague shopping list was that it meant one could end up with anything, though. As in this case. Although she had only had three books on her list, the small basket she was carrying already held seven with an option on more. Whether for good or for bad... They'd see.

She found herself fiddling with a novel and quickly shoved the book back into the shelf. The timeframe set by the closing hours didn't help either... Still, idle hands are up to no good and time spent educating oneself was time well spent. Ah, what the hell... With a frustrated sigh, she pulled the novel back out and added it to the others. As she stepped out of the aisle, she couldn't help but notice some familiar figure at one of the tables, seemingly busy with some books. That was unexpected, not only for her but also for that... tenant of hers, who was overcome with rage as he noticed this guy daring to encroach on where she was treading ! As she took a few quicker and more forceful than necessary steps towards said person, Helen stuffed the instinctual desire to show the other vampire the colour of his innards and paint the walls with his blood in two coatings down where they belong and deliberately slowed down in an effort not to present herself as too much of a threat.

JC recognized the feeling before even seeing her face through the stacks. The idea of a shadow lurking. The urge to chew and tear apart such ephemeral parts with his fangs and claws. And while he did look up, at least that familiarity kept him from jumping up from his seat in a start. Or worse, a rage. Especially at her almost stomping her foot on his ground.

"Miss Kingsley!" He pushed it down, giving a slight smile that could probably pass a grimace "I wasn't expecting to see you here."

Wait... had they been introduced? Shit. He couldn't remember. The Gangrel curse no doubt at work. He gave a slightly more cordial smile "How are you doing this evening?" he asked as he stood.

Aaand he was falling into court etiquette. He closed the book he had been reading, mentally projecting all the pesky, murderous and baroque feelings into the tomb.

Crystal loved late night library sessions. Well okay, that was a lie. Sometimes it just panned out that way because he slept all day, because he partied the whole night before that. And if it weren't for his annoying mentor he could have slept some more and picked up where he left yesterday. 'Sure I can put in a good word for you at the Club. Oh, by the way: how are your studies coming along? Crystal could hear the geezers shit-eating grin even over the phone.

So the Mystagogue was out and about, looking to get some chill reading on demonology in while maybe brushing up his Latin by translating some old classics or something. Whatever it was to have some reasonable claims to being busy with learning. Plus, libraries at night weren't exactly well-visited and offered many dark nooks and crannies to have all sorts of distractions.

He dressed unusually casual tonight, combining sweatpants and a thin sweatshirt off the rack with a dark coat. After picking out some books - a little bit of Roman mythology, a little bit on Islamic jinn - he looked for a place to make camp when his eyes fell on a handsome bearded guy. Talk about distractions. He was talking to an unremarkable woman that somehow gave the Mage the creeps. Maybe it was the shitty library lighting, but both of them looked pale and trying to look at the woman's shadow made Crystal feel a bit dizzy. Then again, there might be some leftovers from last night coursing through his blood that he could blame for that.

Either way, Crystal decided to put down his books not far from the man and nodded politely at the two, a mischievous smile on his face.

"That's the fun about it, never know who you trip over going about your business."

Helen closes in and shrugs that after JC's question, the basket hilt around her elbow and the way she adjusts for that weight makes it look a little comical. Funnily enough, her preoccupation with trying to pin a name to JC helped distract from the more unsavoury impulses.

"Eh, not too bad. Long hours, short days, as always, but I had a few stuffs to collect, so there's that. How about you ? I mean, that's a lot of stuff you got there... That doesn't all have to do with work, I hope ?"

She leans against the table and tries to get a glimpse of some of the titles of the veritable book fort he had built around himself, as she realizes she doesn't really know what JC's line of work actually is. Ah well, too late, they are committed now !

JC noticed the mortal in his sweat pants with a Roman myths book, and the smile he gave. One JC almost couldn’t help but return, for the second of captivation that the guy demanded. In sweatpants, no less.

JC mentally shook himself, there were other people he needed to pay attention to. Though the Beast’s demands were much less pleasant. All the same, he forced some of his vitae to flow. A mortal this close (and interested)…. It was probably safe than sorry.

Helen’s close approach felt uncomfortable. JC did his best to sort his own feelings from those invoked by Nosferatu in general. Sacramento (so far) had held only those that could pass as human. Yet in a way that made it even harder. There was no separating looks from actions. Kingsley moved forward and JC wasn’t scared that a monster was approaching. He simply had suspicions that if he didn’t watch her approach carefully she would use it as a way to attack. And worse still, when wasn’t that true for another Kindred?

He gave a pleasant smile, trying not to think how she might have been looking to ‘trip’ over his business. “Small surprises,” he commented sitting down again to try and at least appear to fit within the environment they were in. He didn’t even notice he had moved over one seat towards Crystal (and away from Helen) without even thinking about. “Not for work at all. I’m a recent convert to paganism.” Surprisingly true for a response. “And I’m looking to expand my knowledge of heathen myth.”

He noticed she hadn’t used his name. Did she know it? Damn he wished he could remember if they’d talked in court before. But right now he was going to assume not. Which triggered some of his anxiety that he’d called her by name without that being the case. He probably seemed like a creep.

Helen reads a couple titles. Norse Mythology by Neil Gaiman. The Poetic Edda. The Prose Edda. Both by Jackson Crawford. A translation of the Ulster Cycle.

Occasional glances confirmed: the pale-looking skin must be due to the lighting, because when the guy sat down (and Crystal didn't miss where he sat down) he looked a lot healthier. She on the other hand.. Did they know each other? Was she the librarian? They seemed to get deep into small-talk, so either they just met or were acquaintances. The Warlock couldn't help but listen to the conversation going on and the word 'paganism' made some bells ring in his head. A newly arrived Awaken? Newly Awoken even? Would that evoke the dreaded term 'company ink'?

Or maybe he was just a Sleeper looking for answers in all the promising places? In any case, it provided a welcome opening. He politely cleared his throat and turned towards Mr. Paganism and the pale one. "Sorry, I didn't mean to eavesdrop, but I happen to dabble in that topic myself. Need any recommendations?" He offered his hand and a lopsided smile to JC. "I'm Chris, by the way."

Helen frowns shortly as JC brings up converting, but finishes with a shrug. She leans a bit closer to the books and reads the titles proper.

"Ah, I see. Guess that explains the focus away from the Greco-Roman stuff and on the Nordic-Irish bit. Could've thought as much."

After all, his religion is his business, not hers. Also, due to the other guy, who calls himself Chris, present, she suppresses the jab at two of the city's covenants. As is, she straightens up a bit from over the table and shifts her eyes on the third among them, giving him a nod. On another closer look, she doesn't look that pale anymore... ?

    "Hey, Chris."

Nothing more for no, after all, she doesn't want to intorude too much.

'Does it?" he asked Helen, trying to reign in the suspicion she was trying to get a jab in about him being new or maybe white? No he was probably reading in too much. "Just trying to get a good base of mythology. Got to start somewhere."

"Hi Chris, I'm JC, nice to meet you." he responded as the disarming stranger approached "The Gaiman has been the easiest read and best read," he offered when asked for a recommendation "But I think a lot of that has to more modern storytelling. The Eddas have been... kind of a slog to read through sometimes." But they were a lot more scholarly.
