    Stonebones Snowskin

The emtpy.fullness.pain was still aching inside Gerrit as he walked all the way to the High Striker in slow, deliberate steps. He tried not to think, to let Winter coat him in an air of composure - much to the disdain of the Ogre heart beating in his chest.

What he wanted to ask Ram and the other Summer was stupid at best, reckless at worst but he didn't care at this point. At this moment he only saw one way of distracting himself from what Vivian's departure had done to him.
He had his hands buried in the pockets of the black hoodie he wore together with some plain, worn-down pair of jeans. His head was covered and despite the hot weather he wanted to show as little skin as possible. Lest someone called my scars beautiful again. He brought hardly anything with him, most notably were the three Blushberries from the Garden in Winter's Hollow. He grew them himself, so he knew he could rely on them.

The Stonebones arrived shortly before the park closed, waiting outside for the other two to arrive. Some time ago he would have agonized about whether Ram was waiting inside for him, whether he was burdening others with his spontaneous request, whether he really wanted to do this.

Some time ago I also believed that things could turn out well.

The situation was - a little weird.

Ram wasn't sure what Gerrit wanted as a favor, why said favor would include Worm, or why the Stonebones decided to meet them at the High Striker. Most explanations didn't make sense with how the request was made. Not even his fellow Ogre being under duress because then he should have asked for Circe as well. It was mildly stressing, especially with everything going on with the fetch going down. Still, he did his best to make it work for his friend.

So, Ram decided to not worry too much. He'd cleared out a small sitting area, like they had during Summer meets. Chairs and collapsible table. Though he didn't have time to swing by the grocery store for food. Then, just in case, moved the door with a hole punched through it along the edge of said clearing.

At the designated time he put his head out the door to check if the park was empty of mortals and saw Gerrit had already arrived.

"Hey," he said opening the entrance wider "Did you want to come in?" There was concern in his brow.

    Colonel Worm

    Mask
Worm is tall, whip thin, and corded with muscle. He's got more than a few scars. His eyes are blue and wild. His dirty blond hair is often greasy and worn short in the front, longer in the back—what some may call a mullet. There's always a mischievous smile on his lips. His wardrobe is extensive and totally crazy, filled with second-hand costumery and bizarre outfits scavenged from thrift-bins. The clothes reflect his attitude: Colonel Worm loves to make a scene and leave a lasting impression, for better or worse.

    Mien
Worm's mien is quintessential Goblin: he is taller, thinner, and more scarred. His skin is a bright red and his eyes a glaucous white (with no discernible pupils). What little hair he has is also white. His ears and nose are pointed and his hands and feet are approximately doubled in size. His muscles stand out like lengths of rope beneath his skin.

Two Ogres: one heartbroken, the other a little stressed, a little confused. Then, there's the Goblin: carefree as always.

Worm strolls though the park, wearing an outfit that is suitably strange: plaid high-water slacks, a tight teal t-shirt, white crocs. The ensemble is topped off with a black cowboy hat and (literal) rose-colored glasses. A lit cigarette hangs from his lips and he's humming a favorite tune.

It's occurred to him that this whole meeting is a little weird. He and Ram haven't really gotten to know each other. And he's only encountered Gerrit once, briefly, at the Summer Coronation. But the Colonel's not the type to worry about awkwardness. Indeed, he's pretty much impervious to that particular feeling.

Turning a corner near the High Striker, he spots the two Ogres. Pulls the cigarette from between his lips and gives a high, loud whistle to let them know he's coming.

When he reaches the entrance to the Striker where they're standing, he tips his hat. "Evening, boys. What's the good word?"

Gerrit's face was hard, barely moving. He regarded Ram for a moment before simply nodding. "Yes, let's go."

Before he could do so he heard someone whistling. He couldn't place the tune, neither did he care. He turned around, saw Worm and actually scoffed. Relax. He is not the problem. Right, Gerrit had asked him to come and he did. Breathing in, breathing out. He nodded at the Goblin, then he turned to Ram and motioned him to enter. The Colonel would follow.

Once everyone was inside the Onyx looked around, thinking about how to tell them what he wanted. Thinking about how to make the voices in his head shut up for a hot minute.

"I want you to hit me." He forced himself to look first at the Wizened, then at Ram. Maybe his roommate could see the hurt in those eyes that were more bloodshot than usual. "I don't want to talk about it. Will you do that?" With that he scoffed again, this time it sounded like something in his throat came lose. Gerrit spat out some clotted blood as he called upon his Durance: muscles tensed, skin hardened and he was getting ready for the kind of pain he knew.

Gerrit won't defend himself. His armor is 3.

Ram's first reaction was of course to say no. Gerrit wasn't the enemy. And you didn't just hit your allies! What was the Stonebones thinking?

Then the blood got spit out. A little piece of reddish brown gunk and Ram frowned as gears started to turn his his Ogrish skull. That Gerrit was not only serious but hadn't come to Ram first about this. Which meant if he turned his roommate away, then he might just seek out 'help' elsewhere. He remembered a couple cutters on the battlefield. People that didn't want to die but wanted a way to feel in control.

"Come on, but there will be some talking," he said simply, walking over to the gate. He signed something to the door, letting a bit of glamour filled with his anger at this happening flow out of him and into the wood. When he opened the freestanding entrance, inside was the Summer hollow. Ram's meditation garden sat off to one side.

But the rest was blackened dirt with a pile of supplies in the middle.

"Colonel, can you check him over? Let me know if there's any spots to avoid besides the basics."

Ram walked over to the supplies, looking around what he'd put her for potential hedge patrols until he found the spare first aid kit.

"Before we start," he said, opening the kit and making sure nothing had expired "Did someone tell you you needed to do this?" He looked up to meet Gerrit's eyes. It looked like he had been crying and Ram knew the guy had issues with Fairests. If one of them had used contracts convince the other Ogre to endure pain... Ram would be adding them to the enemy list.

Worm's first impression? Gerrit looks rough. Like worse than your typical Ogre rough.

His second? Well there is no second. That's it. That's the Colonel's whole ass read on the situation.

He tries to catch Ram's eye on the way into the High Striker, but doesn't manage it. Besides, the Ram-ster isn't a very emotive guy in the first place (at least in Worm's limited experience).

"So, uh..." How's your night going? Seen any good movies? What're your thoughts on mixing uppers and booze? Worm's about to start jabbering away when Gerrit makes his request.

Blink. Blink. The Goblin just stares at the Stonebones for a second. Eyes to Ram, back to Gerrit.

"Hey, guys, I'm all for kink. No kink-shaming here. But if you want a third, you've got to give a guy a little warning. I haven't showered or anything. Unless that's also your thing, in which ca--" I don't want to talk about it, Gerrit follows up. So Worm shuts his trap. He can see that this isn't a sexy-time thing. For better or worse. And it's not the time for kidding around either.

He doesn't agree or decline the request. Waits for Ram to say the first word. It's clear these two are close. And Worm is...what? A beat down consultant?

He'd pitched his butt before coming in? Why'd he do that? God, what the Colonel wouldn't give for a smoke.

Instead he follows Ram to the Hollow entrance and then through it. Lets Gerrit go first so he can keep eyes on Mr. Fight Club.

"Yeah, I got you," the Goblin answers Ram and, without missing a beat, steps in front of Gerrit. Starts poking, prodding, palpating, extending limbs, checking reflexes. "Pardon my...everything," he mutters to his patient. Presses his ear to the guy's gross Stonebone's chest to listen to his heart, respiration. It's all on the fly, but make-do, battlefield medicine is the Colonel's can of...well, worms.

Gerrit breathed in, breathed out. Why do I always have to explain myself? Everyone goes around and does. whatever. they. want. He just stared at Ram, doing his best not to grab the Render, shake him until it made sense and yell in his face. Hell, maybe screaming would make it make sense to Gerrit too.

He followed Ram into the Hollow. Sure, if he was going for Ogre-approved violence he might as well take it directly to the Hedge. He didn't really have an eye for his surroundings, his hard, blank stare didn't focus on anything when he wasn't looking at either Ram or Worm. Did I ask you questions when you wanted to go looking for your Fetch?

Then the Wizened went up close and personal, poking and prodding him. Gerrit's Mantle flared up slightly, giving the illusion of clearness around him. He had enough clarity to be thankful for Winter's calm, for his hardened skin. Feeling those thin fingers on his body probably would have sent the Ogre over the Edge otherwise. Why was the Colonel here? Vivian seemed close with him, she seemed careless at the Summer Coronation. Was the Onyx Courtier looking for answers, for rhyme and reason to her departure? Nobody asked her any questions, she didn't give people the chance to ask questions.

He wanted to just grab the Goblin and shove him, start the damn brawl already - but he couldn't. Reflexive coping mechanisms cut both ways and at this moment he hated how in control he was.
"I trust you. Do you trust me?" A simple question, but it beat explaining everything else to Ram: the thing with Vivian, his Durance, how he hoped that he could chose the pain he knew instead of enduring the alternative. He couldn't do that. Not yet. "Then hit me. I am not wounded, nor am I forced into doing that." As if to prove his point he made himself smaller, preparing himself for what might come.

Gerrit doesn't seem to be forced or blackmailed into this.

“I trust you, do you trust me?” Ram threw back the taunt with a dangerous sadness in his voice as he set aside “‘Cause right now it feels less like you want a friend you trust than a mindless punching machine.” Worm’s hit only served to emphasize that being a close friend was not a requirement at this party. Ram sighed and his scowl softened slightly as he went back to the pile, pulling out the boxing gloves he’d bought for his bracers and began wrapping his hands on the way back.

“We all have our own ways of coping of not feeling in control, or numb, or hurt. God knows we serve enough drinks at the coronations to prove that. So, I’m not arguing against doing this.” With his wrists supported he slipped on the first glove “But if you were to tell me you wanted to go on an all night bender and have me along but that we couldn’t talk the whole night,” he velcroed it tight, put on the other glove and used his teeth to on the Velcro “Thash kinnna ullshi. You ask people to come along to keep you safe. So you won't be alone."

The swing came fast and easy. He could have pulled, or gone all out. No. Instead it was simple. It could have been called lazy if not for the practiced power behind it, straight past Gerrit's hunched guard and into the Stonebone's chest. Even through the cushioning of the gloves and the Ogre's thick skin, it was enough to knock a couple breaths out.

Ram's eyes were a mix of compassion, anger, and hurt.

Gerrit heard Ram, but he wasn't fully listening. Would not inviting the Colonel have made this.. better? More intimate? He knew he wasn't very good at talking about his own feelings at the best of times, why would he burden a friend with all of this at his worst?

Then again, why did he have to consider other peoples' feelings even now? He was in pain, he needed to vent all of this emotion in a more or less controlled way. Of course simply talking about it would have been the healthiest way to deal with this problem, but if every one of the Lost had healthy ways do cope they wouldn't be here in this situation at all. Maybe not calling Ram would have been the move - but the Render would have found out and the breach of trust would have been even bigger.

    On the other-

    "Gnf."

Worm's hit drove all the air out of Gerrit's lungs and a red pain washed over him, turned off all the thoughts. This felt correct: impersonal, but with purpose. Nobody could mistake the madly grinning Goblin for the cold and faceless Keeper.
He knew that this was only the beginning, but that's where the beauty laid: he knew what else would come. He was good at this, there was nobody to disappoint here.

He fought his way back into conscious thoughts, fought back the pain and rage until he could look Ram in the eyes again while the Render was preparing his blow. He was still talking, but the words have been drowned out by the sound of Gerrit's own heartbeat and blood rushing through.

Ram's punch spoke volumes though: it made Gerrit's whole body sing with ache even through the hardened skin. He needed to flush out every last memory of her. Replace all the exciting tinglings and flutterings left by Vivian's touch with a more reasonable outlook on life. Hope was an option, but he didn't want to be fooled - in the end there was pain and sorrow.

He recognized the look in his fellow Ogre's eyes and even though he was fighting tooth and nail to keep his composure he couldn't help but tear up a bit. No. You don't deserve pity, you are not worth being comforted. Above all was this internalized voice, like a heavy bell through the crimson mist of hurt reminding him of what he did and did not deserve.

The Stonebones broke eye contact and slowly took out one of the Blushberries he had been cupping inside the pocket of his hoodie and pushed it into his mouth. Now he had a chance to see if his ambitious experimenting had been a success or not. A gentle hotness coursed through his body as he broke the fruit's skin and chewed it up and while his breaths might habe been a bit laboured following the two strikes he felt himself breathing easier again.

Which meant that the thoughts were coming back as well. Gerrit raised his head once more, his eyes clearly showing some kind of struggle going on. "Again."
