Phoenyx sat in the gym of the Aegis firehouse in a lotus position, breathing slowly. Over the recent months there had been few demands on her attention, meaning she had devoted her time to study and preparation for whenever the next mission would come.
Meditation had proven to be a key part of this process. For her, it was a time to reflect. What was her place in the universe? The Supernal was the self, after all. Should her choices be altered, should the same scenario present itself? Rarely did an Obrimos change their mind, but that did not mean choices should not be reviewed carefully.
This process also allowed her time to think about her path. How she wanted to develop as an Awakened. One part of her, the dutiful, Arrow part of her mind, wanted to focus on the study of Prime. It’s utility, the shielding of her spells – these were all useful tools while there were eyes looking for the Awakened of the city. Another was absorbed by the pull of her Path. There were several Obrimos in Sacramento, their interests divergent. But to her, the pull of energy, of vitality, was ever-present. The legendary power of Fire, the feminine bestial form of which she took her shadow name.
Was it selfish to focus on that side? Service was Mastery, and there were no masters of Forces in the area. Phoenyx had often contemplated on whether this was truly a service, or justification of something she desired instead of a practical duty. But even so, was that so wrong? To pursue one’s own interests? Was she not more than a duty to the Adamantine Arrow, that could develop as she chose?
Her face heats in a blush – such thoughts of rebellion. Eyes twitch behind eyelids.
The study of Physics had been enlightening. Mechanics. Thermodynamics. The laws that govern the forces of the universe. Understanding that they were there and learning to apply the same will to bend more visible forces to more fundamental ones. She focused on the memory of her first success.
Alone in her room, the Firebird focuses on the candle. The wick. The very tip. Willing the friction of atoms into flame.
Suddenly, a flare of light in the dim room. The candle burns merrily, illuminating the smile on the Arrows face.
She brings her hands together, right fist into the palm of the left, and overlaying. Focusing her will.
