Moretti understood Jack. Mable, on the other hand, her reply was worth a little more read, the tension of the situation and the movements requiring Lina to assess more than just the surface, to try and figure out what were Mable's real feelings on Jack's move to... well, as she put it, bribe her?

Feels on attempt to bribe her: Hope, tenacity, disappointment. Lina could tell that Mable was hoping she was wrong and had misread the situation. That maybe Jack really did mean to offer madcap the boon. However, she believed he meant it as a bribe. It's obvious that she intends to remain unsullied by a bribe or corruption and Jack should know better. Her disappointment flashed in her eyes briefly, but eagle eyed Lina caught it. (let me know if this is enough cause that was an awesome roll)

Ellis listens to the advice offered by the Sheriff with the occasional nod. Her synopsis of the situation jived with his, and he disagreed with nothing that was said. Jacque was, to put it so bluntly that Ellis would not say it out loud in Court, a professional stand in for others with actual power.

But then Jacque speaks, and it's all made clear. Jacque wanted to be Keeper. If he had been made Keeper in April, then he could have exactly the amount of micromanagement his little lawyer heart craved, all with official backing. It explained various things from their last encounter in May. It explained how he acted in April. It explained the whole Madcap issue. It explained why he was trying to backseat drive the actual Keeper. He had his own interpretation of what happened in his world, and when someone disagreed with that interpretation, he tried to correct them with what he saw as logical questioning, not understanding how offensive people tended to find that sort of thing outside debate clubs. When people told him to knock it off, he probably became convinced that they were irrational, or pursuing hidden motives. It was a very smart person way to go about being social, assuming people were robotic logic puzzles suffering from faulty inputs.

The instant he ran into a vampire who was unwilling to hand hold him patiently, or if his backers dropped him because he was a liability, it was going to be the literal death of him. "Yes, you said no. Then you offered to pass him my number, bringing us back around to the issue that I didn't want my number coming to the Bishop's attention through you. Honestly, I assumed that it was meant as a sort of cunning ruse to allow you to get my contact information for yourself, and I wasn't in the mood to indulge that kind of foolishness." Jacque was proving himself to be one of those people who didn't respect boundaries, and that wasn't something he was very interested in supporting.

Ellis raised an eyebrow at the blatant offer of bribery to go smack Madcap, especially after the Keeper had already declared the issue resolved to her satisfaction. So when his gaze turns to Mable to observe his reaction, he has to raise a hand to disguise the amused smile that grows behind it. Maybe Mable wasn't so much nicer than he was after all, because that was an exceedingly artful way to tell someone fuck off, I'm the Keeper. It was the kind of thing that he'd give a golf clap to normally, if he didn't harbor some worry that it would be misinterpreted by the wrong party as insulting.

"Well Herald." Ellis says, his voice not hiding his amusement at all. "You have the Master of Elysium's advice. Sheriff Moretti's advice. And of course, my own advice. All three of which seem to flow in a similar direction. I think that I will be going to go over to speak with Madcap myself so I can gossip about this entire situation with him, but if there's any offer you would like me to convey to him while I do so, I will be happy to be a go-between in this matter. No Trivial required, because I find the entire situation incredibly entertaining."

"Keeper Wood, Sheriff Moretti," Ellis nods to each woman respectfully, "it was an utter delight speaking with the both of you tonight. I look forward to the next time our paths cross, but I will leave you to your official business with the Herald. Herald." The smile in Ellis' voice had a much meaner, more predatory tone than the pleasant smile he wore on his face. "I doubt that you will believe me sincere in this offer, but when you wish to address the deficiencies your sire left in your education, let me know. I'm sure I'd be willing to work something out with you to help bring you up to speed."

The Herald explained himself further, signalling his desire to resolve matters with Madcap. That was cool by her, and something she recommended. And that was where it started to go sideways. This idea of precedent, which suggested to her that he still hadn't quite processed the point she'd just made about Prestation as dispute resolution being a question of relative power. That, or he believed he had the relative power to not get velociraptored by a frenzying claw machine. She wasn't sure which, but hey. Whatever floated his boat. She was pretty sure that ol' Madcap was a clever girl.

"You'd be agreeing to it because you pissed him off in April, and by ignoring him asking you to leave him be, and... well. You seem to genuinely believe you took him seriously, but that wasn't what I got out of your delivery. You've got a silver tongue, but... man, it's a people skill thing, I guess? You'll figure it out."

And then he did something strange. Signalling a desire to work shit out, but then... immediately trying to offer Mable Prestation in exchange for her 'enforcing the expectations' in whatever way was in the note, probably against Madcap. Which would make it worse. Like offering her Prestation would remove any perception that he was sniping back right now. Mable deflected the bribe, calling it what it sure looked like. Beneath the niceness was a surety of what was going on. Good. The Keeper wasn't an airhead.

"Hey Keeper, if ever you feel someone's making it harder to resolve things in Elysium, you holler. I'm happy to break my foot off as required."

She had a sample sized pump for just the occasion.

And then Ellis Meadows happened. She glanced at Garrett Prosper , curious to note in the lower-case-H harpy in the room had caught the sickest burn dropped in Court in months. Invictus Daevadom occurred, as Meadows raked his claws in on the Herald, about how he'd become a topic of gossip, about how he was...

Lina's lips pressed into a flat line as Ellis Meadows offered to give Jack an education. Where was Rebecca Simmons? She would have loved this.

"Nice seeing you, Meadows. Thanks for the chat, guys. I'm gonna circulate. Have a great night, everyone."

    God damn.

    Lina Moretti bounces.

    Goes by Jack.

    Educated, scholarly, lawyer, scientist.
Jack's outward demeanor and tone are a baseline of respectful and calculated.

He actively debates, persuades, negotiates and even at time tries to intimidate, as core skills of any lawyer worth his salt.

Jacque smirked at the predictable response, yet another distortion of reality to fit his own narrative, “No. What I first responded with was that I could just send your contact information to him, however, with the cloud still looming at the time from our prior disagreements I would hate for your early interactions with him to be tainted by default on nothing more than the messenger. It wasn’t until you persisted with wanting the number that I reminded you that I was willing to send your number to him, but his number was not mine to give.”

His head turned sharply to Mable, “Are you serious?” He pauses a moment to process what Mable had said rather than give a snap response. “You are. Unbelievable.” He scoffed and sternly replied, “I discretely offer a Minor Boon for my part in the conversation that escalated so that you can enforce the Prince’s expected decorum without the burden of being called biased. I explain fully the reasons why I offer this and you dare to announce this as a bribe?” His eyes burrow into the Keeper, “Do you truly not understand the insult that conveys?”

Shaking his head, “No. I’m not going to explain something you’d be aware of if you had bothered to listen at any point. God forbid any more of my words get twisted tonight.”

Lina’s non-answer and departure was… exhausting. Having said all that he could on the matter which was far more than the nothing he originally desired, his eyes lingered on the Goddess predator. They then fall to Twist and then finally to the exit. Curiosity swelled in him, but it would have to be another night. A night when fools weren't so unanimously poised to control the dialog.

    Jacque exits court.

"Thank you Mr. Meadows. Please come visit me at the farm sometime soon." She pulls a card from her pocket. "My number if you ever need or want to chat."

"Thank you, Sheriff. I appreciate the offer. You know you can count on me when you need me."

Mable listened to Jack. But before she could speak he walked out. She watched him go. He didn't answer her questions. Wasn't that what he accused Mad Cap of doing? And hadn't he said the words out loud for all to hear? Yet she was indiscreet? Weird. Mable was just not going to understand, at least not tonight.

"Mr. Meadows...never mind. I'm not quite sure what I was going to ask. Please don't let me hold you up." Mable had heard laughs and snickers throughout court, she was pretty sure it was from their conversation.

God, Ellis wanted to take a bow. Or maybe throw fingerguns at Jacque's retreating back and say 'Bang'. But there was such a thing as winning with grace, which only looked better when the other one lost without it.

Besides. He was being escorted out by the laughter and suppressed snickers of Court. Ellis didn't need to gloat that much.

The insult to the Keeper's authority was... let's say interesting though. He knew what he would do if he was in the Keeper's position, but she was obviously a big girl who had her big girl fangs and everything. Ellis wasn't going to try and manage the woman by feeding her helpful 'suggestions' on how to do her job. No need to pull a Jacque.

"If I may be so bold, I think you handled the matter very adroitly. And while I might be a little biased when it comes to the Herald, based on my admittedly limited understanding of the Sheriff, I think she would agree." Ellis accepts Mable's offered card, and reciprocates with his own. "I look forward to it Keeper, please do not hesitate to call on me if you remember what you were going to ask, or even if you simply wish to talk. And, should you need me to recount what went on here tonight, I will be happy to do so." It didn't take a social mastermind to be aware that Jacque was going to try and deal with this issue once again, when he thought he had back up from his patrons. He was probably drafting up his speech right now. "I think your choice in decor for tonight was delightful, and I look forward to seeing what else you come up with. I hope your evening runs more smoothly now that the disruptive element has removed himself"

Ellis withdraws into the main court thread. Thanks for the scene everyone!
I'll close this one once Mable moves on.

"Thank you, Mr. Meadows, on all accounts. For myself, I have no bias for or against the Herald. I have worked with him successfully in the past. Now that he is Herald he speaks for the Prince when her Grace isn't present." She tapped her lips with her index finger as she thought about this.

"I just felt the need to remind anyone who is listening about that fact." She knew most of the room was listening. "Well, I need to go speak with Mad Cap. Again thank you."

Mable walks over to Mad Cap.

good to close, thanks. Great side-scene everyone
