After thinking altogether too long about it, Hugh finally takes out his cell phone and texts Mable Wood, Priscus of his clan in Sacramento:
Hello--Hear we're family. And I've been told you like to meet relatives that are new in town. Would you have a little time for a chat? Let me know. The name's Hugh btw.
Message sent, Hugh waits with a mixture of dread and curiosity for the reply.

Mable smiles at the text. Yay, a new family member. She does a little happy dance before answering. "Hi Hugh, I would love to meet with you and chat. We could meet in Capital Park if you would like, unless there is a different place you would feel more comfortable."

The text is friendly enough and now it's Hugh's turn to smile. Maybe--just maybe--the Stiffs here will be different.
