(1808) A Duel

Knot danced away from Epitaph and her attempt to shock and unnerve him with maggots and guts, and as he does, Epitaph can see a dozen O-mikuji that he stuck to her back before he stabbed her burst into blue flame and smoke. As the smoke chokes Epitaph and the strips of paper burn, she can feel all of her good fortune burn with them.

Epitaph only laughed, her voice cracked and tinged with manic desperation as she felt the luck draining from her. Her head continued to turn as she laughed, the sickening sound of tendons snapping, vertebrae cracking as her neck was stretched to breaking, the smooth arch deforming as bone and muscles shredded and split. Her rotted arm rose and grasped a handful of black hair, roughly yanking until the head was torn off, flaps of torn skin and her dangling spine dangling beneath her still laughing face.

Wielding the decapitated head like a flail, the headless corpse of the Necormancer stumbled towards the Enchanter, attempting to beat him to death with her own skull.

Knot ducks under Epitaph's frenzied swings, her maddened head rebounding from his armor while trying to bite her way through it, and he splits the shears into two daggers. He fends off one strike and then another, and then he strikes back, not at her body, but at the chain of her macabre flail. He strikes an almost invisible flaw, shattering a link of the lead chain and sending the rotted and screaming head flying off outside the circle, where it vanishes in a trail of sparks.

The headless corpse of the Necromancer didn't falter, nor did it respond to the Enchanter's plea. Instead, leaking streams of silver and gold from its fingertips, the corpse spun towards the enchanter and, from the torn neck, shredded muscles and flapping ligaments showing, a spray of thick, oily ectoplasm sprayed out, enveloping the enchanter, the viscous liquid squirming as it tried to find its way up his nose and into his mouth...

Swamped by the oily manifestation of Death, Knot throws something small and round at the floor. An acorn. One that, in moments, matures into an oak tree tall enough to raise him up and out of the vile not-fluid and into momentary safety as he spits out the ectoplasm and gathers more strings of fate in one hand, that he casts down to epitaph like a fisherman. Timing his actions, he leaps down, his weight acting as a counterbalance, and in a moment the gaping wound where Epitaph's head was is stitched up tight with glowing blue threads.

The corpse flailed at the faint blue threads, the jagged pieces of bone protruding from the rotted flesh of her fingers finally finding the sutured wound and ripping it open...

But, her arms didn't stop there, but kept pulling, tearing, meat and sinew giving way, the corpse body literally pulling itself apart in a chorus of snapping ligaments, crackling bone, and explosions of moist tearing. And, stepping from the pile of useless flesh and bone, was the ghost of Epitaph, hallowed and regal as only the departed can be. Yet, when she flew across the room towards Knot, she was rebuffed by the power of life sheathing him...

As Knot is forced to one knee, his armor cracking and splintering under the freezing onslaught of chill wind, there is a moment where he seems like he is about to take his feet again...

And then in a flash, he is frozen into an immobile statue of ice.
